Y'know... as interesting as I find this entire theory... I'd like to think that scientists could be doing something so much more productive with their time, wouldn't you think?

Yes, because that definitely has everything to do with this topic.

NersopIt's what those particular scientists do though... what else would they spend their time on?

The ones working with the gravity wave detector are trying to prove aspects of Einstein's theories and the Hologram theory guy works as the director of Fermilab- so none of them are really devoting all their time to the "Universe as a hologram" idea anyway. Most likely Dr Craig Hogan came up with the idea in his spare time. :)
It's an interesting concept though... As I understand it, we wouldn't actually be a hologram, that's just a way of conceptualising the idea, like "colour forces" aren't really about different colours.

.... anyways... This isn't the first time I've heard this crazy theory. Someone once pointed out that the universe is surprisingly simple. Whoever said it stated that the elemental table and atom structure is sufficiently simple to be a base code in a super virtual environment and thus we and all other life could be ingeniously crafted AI designed to be a part of the program.
Well.... in order to defy that thought (and cling to the hope that I'm not a simulation (or in this case, part of someones credit card)) I say: BALDERDASH!
Edit: Now that I think about it... Whoever made that claim might have been influence by the Matrix. At least I think I read that after the first movie came out.

Those were my two cents.

That's not what the idea is about. "Hologram" is simply a way of conceptualising it, it's not intended literally.
Not many ideas in science are. That's why "Colour forces" aren't about real forces of colour and "String Theory" isn't about the universe being made of bits of twine.
This idea is that similar to a theory about black holes, "information" about the contents is mirrored around the outside of it in a 2 dimensional form. That's all.

oh dear... :(
Look. I'm no advocate of this idea. I'm just pointing out something I read once. The theory also pointed out that all life on earth is based on DNA that only consist of 4 forms of enzymes. It also mentioned that laws of physics were surprisingly simple as well.
I guess what the theorist was pointing out was that the building blocks of the universe are simple, once you brake everything down.
Those were my two cents.

Product PlacementFair enough PP. And I know Kyupol likes the idea that reality is a construction. I was just pointing out that this "hologram" notion isn't about that at all.

Uncovering the workings of our universe that lead to countless possible advancements in technology if prooven correct.

The funniest thing here is that if a scientist used a pie as a metaphor to describe the universe, almost all of you would think they literally meant that the universe WAS a pie. -_-

Yes, because trying to prove that the world is a hologram will DEFINITELY provide all sorts of advancements in technology.
Totally.

The experimental physicists mentioned are working on something totally different and the theoretical physicist who came up with the idea did so in his spare time. ;)

The ones who're working to find gravity waves are interesting though. We could do a hell of a lot of interesting stuff if we could find out more about gravity. :)

And space is shaped like a soccer ball: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3158787/
Well...we know that when matter exists in three-dimensional space, space warps in direct proportion to the amount of energy in that matter, and that matter begins moving in a direction described by a curved line.
It could be that people think that the mass in the matter is what warps space and creates gravity, but in reality it is the energy in the matter that actually warps space, giving the appearance of what we refer to as "mass". This would be a theory of "alterable space".

I guess Issac Newton was wasting his time prooving that white light can be split into different wavelengths, that didn't get us anywhere, well except televisions and computer screens.
