The soundtrack to your comic....

Let's imagine that your comic has been made into a movie. The producers have given you total freedom in selecting a couple of songs to work into the score somehow. Which ones would you select, and why?

I'll get started by "scoring" my strip Air Raid Robertson...

"Muchio Selgavio" by Ennio Morricone - This tune is from a parody of spaghetti westerns called "My Name is Nobody". It's essentially Ennio Morricone spoofing his own soundtrack compositions. (Especially the stuff for "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" and "Once Upon a Time in the West" ) There's some crazy flute work on this song as well as a synthezier playing the liefmotif from "Ride of the Valkyries". It's a silly and energetic composition that I think suits my comic very well.

"Peaches en Regalia" by Frank Zappa - Hot Rats is one of my favorite records ever, and this is my favorite song off it. Zappa was prolific, fun, creative, playful, artistically curious, innovative, and virtuoisic. All of these qualities are ones I'd like to end up being described as. One of the best professional compliments I've ever received was when a friend of mine compared my comics to Frank Zappa's music.

"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" by Funkadelic - This is the hauntingly beautiful guitar solo by Eddie Hazel that isn't Maggot Brain. I just love this track and I'd wind up shoehorning it into any sort of movie if given half a chance. (Hypothetically, that is. )

"Right Off" by Miles Davis - This has probably one of the most aggressive and badass solos ever recorded by Miles. It's complemented by John McLaughlin's tough blooze-rock guitar. This is probably one of maybe four jazz-rock compositions that captures the best parts of both genres. Any fight scene would be bolstered with this in the background.

"Hang Up Your Hang-Ups" by Herbie Hancock - This is put in just because it's relentlessly funky. I think it would work very well in a chase scene.

While drawing my newer comic I've been listening to the soundtracks to Evangelion and Persona 3 quite a bit. The whole piano and violen mix helps me get into the mood of doing something serious. Specifically, this song from Evangelion really helps while writing action of a tense build up. For fight scenes I usally listen to either this or this.

WHen I did Le Farce I listend to A LOT of Electric Six. Future is in the Future is what I would kill to have as a main theme to it.

Mentally Disabled Criples and Snakes I actually made while listening to a lot of classical music. Canon in D is still say is one of the greatest songs ever made. Ever.

EDIT: Also your taste in music owns Miles Davis and Frank Zappa? Fuck yes, you are one of my new favorite persons on DD.

EDIT: Actually if I could have a central theme to Zodiac it would be My Delerium by Ladyhawke cause I'm a big homo. Link

In Shaman Quest, I usually listen to things like Latin Rock (Soda Stereo, Heroes del Silencio) or J-Pop (Kokia, Yui) to write and draw dialogue and non-action scenes, while I listen to J-Rock, Hard Rock or Heavy Metal for action or fight scenes. But if I had to choose just a few...

Remolinos by Soda Stereo

Mar Adentro by Heroes del Silencio

Pretty much because I remember listen to those songs when I created both my lead characters, and pretty much tells you who they are...

I should try to make a video from my comic with one of those...

Hmm, seeing Din Krakatau shares the name with my old music project (which I renamed to Pink Noise Inferno)... I'd record the soundtrack myself :D

I just toss up Youtube or the occasional Newgrounds audio link to give an atmosphere of music for some sequences. I don't have a bunch of characters constantly slap fighting or anything so the mood and direction needs to change often, hence various music clips rather than any one ensemble.

But...
If they were still together, Dead Can Dance would probably make a kick ass soundtrack for Arachnid Goddess. Them, or Godspeed You Black Emperor. Methodic and atmospheric music filled with tension and beauty, basically.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

I generally listen to heavy metal and punk while I'm working on just about anything. Some of my favourites include: The County Medical Examiners (they actually are medical examiners!), The Misfits, Wednesday 13, Cannibal Corpse, Ghoul, Finntroll, Goatwhore, Skinless, GWAR (our almighty and perverted overlords), Danny Elfman (I know, I know...he's doesn't make metal or punk music, but his style is just so...er...how would you describe it?), and Macabre.

I also watch The Simpsons, The Tick, horror and b-movies, and, occasionally, The Masters of the Universe while I work.

For MAG-ISA, its Pagtila (fading away) by Slapshock

Its about this imagery of how when the rain starts to fade, your tears will no longer fall.

It could also be Minsan(sometime ago) by Eraserheads.

Its about separation of friendship. Its like you were once friends but after awhile, the friendship fades out.

The album that most closely relates to Faust would have to be "Beethoven's Last Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. A Latin choir would be nice to have at my disposal, though.

Danny Elfman and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead should collaborate for the Vampire Phantasm soundtrack. XD

Other than that I'd have many different songs crop up randomly. For example, for some reason I have always pictured Buddy Holly's "Raining In My Heart" playing right after the terrible prologue of the main VP comic. I guess because old songs during very gritty situations just rule. =P

If Far Out There had a soundtrack, I'd probably involve a lot of The Flaming Lips, of Montreal, Stereolab, and Super Furry Animals. The spacier side of indie-pop.

Conventional Wisdom would be tons of Japanese garage bands like GO!GO!7188, Gitigito Hustler, The Captains, The Psycrons, an Thee 50s High Teens... and probably some Kishidan thrown in for sheer epic.

I think the whole soundtrack to my comic would basically be hard rock and metal.

Maybe a little Rob Zombie...some Mastodon. Maybe Metallica. Uh...I can't think of anymore right now.

But basically, hard rock/metal would fit.
