The comic store that used to be in my town was the most seriously awesome comic store. It was this little hole-in-the-wall type of place, but it had a ton of good comic including the independent imprints, it rented out anime for $3 a DVD (that the only reason I saw so much anime) and local artists could get their stuff there as well. It also had gaming tables, sold anime sountracks, Magic Cards, and had Arcade-Style machines. There was even some DDR. And this was all in ONE room which was 12x15ft at best.
Unfortunatly the "You can come here to hang out" approach didn't make people buy enough, so it went out of business after being around for 14 years. :(
The guy who owned it makes fan parodies though. If you're ever at a convention like Otakon, go see "STEAM The Movie".

I haven't seen too many comic stores recently that have been able to stay in business just selling comics. It's kind of like baseball card stores. They still exist, but I haven't seen one which exclusively sells baseball cards and keepsakes in years.
There was a comic store in Maryland in the Washington DC area which was fairly large and structured like an actual store rather than a warehouse. I'm pretty sure it's still around, but i haven't been there in years so I can't remember the name. Now that I'm down in Savannah, I'll probably never get a chance to go back there. They seemed to have a lot of stuff in glass cases and the store was designed around offering space for regulars to hang out, play cards or RPGs (as well as Mahjong, Go, and other games). They had a fairly large area towards the back with tables and chairs. A friend of mine debuted his dcumentary on pen and paper gamers at the place.

It must be because most comic book sellers are enthusiasts, with zero taste in interior design, and likely not enough funds to afford it even if they had any.

None of the comic shops here in Savannah deal exclusively in comics. They've all got either anime, or magazines, or rpg books.
The comic box is the best in savannah for selection really. And it's the most astectically pleasing. Though downtown there's one with a movie rental place that's pretty good for independant comic sellection.

Damn, I was in Savannah last Spring checking out SCAD. I should have stopped by a comic store.

People round here always ask me if I go to SCAD. Apparently I have that look, but it's really expensive (though I'd like to go) and I could never afford it.
But it's a big comic school. So that's quite nifty, and it leads to a lotta independant comics coming out, some sold at the flea market around here.

I'm probably not going to go. I talked to a couple of pros and they didn't recommend SCAD. So I've decided to go to a regular college and minor in Art (maybe major in Political Science, because I've been taking a lot of AP History courses) and then go to the Kubert School.

I'm not entirely sure. I'm not from Maryland (I'm from VA), so I've only been there a couple times with friends from the area. I believe it was around the Rockville area, but I could be wrong.

That's the beauty of student loans. Although I'm guessing it may not be the best bet when going for the sequential art major. I'm here as a grad student in animation. It also helps to have a fellowship. So my tuition and books are all covered, I just have to pay for the living expenses (and the cat).

If I wasn't 5000 in debt, that'd be an answer.
But cat's rule.

There's a comic shop in my town that looks like it's run out of the guy's house.
I'm afraid to go in there most of the time.

Most student loans are held until six months after graduation. SCAD schedules are pretty easy to work around, too. You could find a way to work part time while attending and pay off your current debts while in school. I'm not trying to pressure you into it or anything, it's just I started out in a similar financial situation when I started out at my last school. For me, it was an experience worth working for.
But cat's rule.
Yes. They certainly do.
