I recently found and read the first part "Preludes and Nocturnes" at my local library and I really enjoyed it.
Unfortunately the library doesn't have any of the other parts, so before I invest money in them has anyone read them and are they worth the money?

I have read some of them (still working on getting them all) and I have to say that if you liked Preludes and Nocturnes, I think you'll like the rest of them as well. They are a little expensive, but they're good and definitely worth a read. If your library doesn't have them, try looking around other libraries.

Many libraries can trade between themselves. Ask at the desk whether they can do interlibrary loan or something. As you've said, it's a big investment. You should exhaust all your options to check it out before buying, if you aren't sure whether you'll like it.

Are they worth the money? I suppose that depends on how much you enjoy them!
As Frostflowers said, if you enjoyed the first volume, there's a good chance you'll enjoy the others. For the most part, each volume is built around a single thread but contains a range of different stories within it.
I'd say they should be on every would-be creator's reading list (and I don't even count myself among The Sandman's biggest fans!) The books' importance in expanding the range of subjects and styles in mainstream comics can't really be over-stated.
I suppose the logical approach is to work through them in order and - if you stop enjoying them - stop reading! Volume 2 is The Doll's House and, like Volume 1, has an interesting mix of horror, whimsy, tongue-in-cheek humour and surreal fantasy. That should be your next stop!

Al Schroeder of MINDMISTRESS http://mindmistress.comicgenesis.com ---think the superhero genre is mined out?
Think there are no new superhero ideas?
Think again.

I've read the first five collections so far and they're all unbelievably good. The only one that let me down at all was "Dream Country." It's just as well written as the others but it's not as good a value because there are only four issues included. If you liked the first one you will love the others because, in my opinion, the first one is easily the weakest of the bunch. Also check out "American Gods" by the same author if your library has it. It's all prose, but it's written in a very similar style to the Sandman series and includes many similar ideas and characters.
