The next-gen version of Sim City was finally announced by Maxis a few days ago. Alas, it was meet with some shock. Sim City 5, or Sim City Socities is not being developed by Maxis, since they are too busy finishing off Spore. Taking the place of Maxis is Tilted Mill.

Another change in Sim City is that the focus has moved from city planning to building socities. Instead of the complex city planning of past games, you'll be able to just plop bulidings down on the ground. The focus being on creating a society and keeping intouch with the people. The cities you can create are fully customizable. It is said that you can create an enviromentally friendly green city, a modern one, something along the lines of "ye olde village", and a 1984-ish society.

Now, I'm not sure what to make of this. One part of me wants to say, "You've Killed Sim City! " and the other part is curious as to how this new look and gameplay will playout. I'll find out later in the year.

the Soul Series kicked off in 1995 so it isn't much younger news than Sim City :-P

Anyway, back to the topic, this game dose look good in its graphics, but this whole society thing keeps screaming 'My Sims' at me, as well as the 'full customization'. But I guess, as has already been said, we'll just have to wait and find out of they have killed the series or taken it on an interesting new path. Ether way just cling to the fact Sim City 6 should be by Maxis again ^_^

That's what I was thinking. Someone at EA probably thought they could squeeze a bit more money and sell more copies of Sim City if they transformed it into The Sims. It's great marketing, but it's at the risk of alienating hard-core fans of the series and becoming more mainstream, like The Sims.

I'm very curious as to how it would play.
