That's the best one, I'm sure most people know it: Originally an insult when the hand is shown backwards-(some guff about it being English archers at Agincourt blah blah blah).
ANYWAY, Churchil co-opted it as the "Victory" symbol when held with fingers front on. And that's what it's always been since.
In the 60's it was co-opted by the hippie movement to mean "peace", which was basically related to the end of war meaning Churchill gave it anyway.

But these days you have it used in Japanese imagery to basically mean "Victory" still, and morons who think that it always means "peace" even though contextually that is often impossible... And even BIGGER morons who wave their fingers around saying "peace" without actually intending that meaning at all.

You need some French knights to come along and snip off those fingers and we'll have come full circle. :)

Dio says the devil sign's actually called the maloik . he got it form his grandma who's an old supersticious italian lady and whenever someone would give her the evil eye, she'd shoot that sign up to repell it and that's where he got it. you dont dispute Dio,dude.

The "vee" as "fuck you" (actually more along the lines of "in your balls") only is appopriate if the thumb is stuck out. Churchill was making that sign when asked as to what he'd do to "that gangster Hitler" It was reinterpreted for we ignorant Americans as "V" for Victory, dot, dot, dot- dash. (Wartime by Paul Fussel among other authors)

As for about one of those "devil" signs they are badly done "HANG LOOSE" signs from Hawai'i. ;) Mahalo

The pope's sign predates them all going back to a blessing from Holy Mother Church way before Agincourt.

When I was learning public speaking/instruction the class was told not to point with a single finger. So hands and fingers being the way they are (as ozone says) occasionally the fingers pointing would be the forefinger and the little finger. The first two fingers are preferred though sometimes only the middle finger is extended quite unintentionally. But then that doesn't always mean anything to non-Americans.

As for the pope that is a blessing going back to the beginnings of the Catholic Church. There's also the Petrine Cross which also confuses the not-so-well-informed on Catholic symbolism/mythology. lol!

As if Satan needs such obvious symbols. He's subtle. Silly people. He could be at your shoulder and you wouldn't know it.
