The Demonstration

A few days ago I downloaded the skate. demo for the PS3 and I might say, it was an enjoyable experience. I definitely adored it more than the redundant Tony Hawk games but anyways... 25 minutes into the demo a timer emerged on my top screen stating that in less than 5 minutes the demo would come to an end. Pff, I thought it was joke but sure enough - 5 minutes later, the demo ended! I didn't even get the opportunity to complete the forsaken demo! I was infuriated! I spent over an hour downloading that demo and for them to just take me on a 30-minute piss ride?! Hell no, fern don't play that.

So what is there to do? Are we living in an age where demos are now timed? Will there ever be an end to this injustice? Time will tell.

That sucks that you didn't get a better taste of the game. I remember the Shareware days where you could get the first couple of levels of Commander Keen or Monster Bash and really come to love the game before you needed to buy the rest.

But I guess when it's a free demo you really don't get a say in how much of the game you get to play for free. Really, the point of the demo is to allow you to play the game enough to crave it and go out and buy it. If you actually plan on buying it now, then the demo worked.

Well, aren't all demos timed?

I remember back when that PlayStation Magazine existed and they gave out those neat little DVD disks with demos on them. Playing a demo usually resulted in one of two things, one, it was just a regular demo with one race, level, or track and such, two, leaving the control inactive for quite sometime would cause the demo to quit.

Ah those were the days. Abe's Oddysee demos and Net Yaroze games.

Terra Incognita and Adventure Game, Demo 42. How I miss you so.
Please, please, you give me too little credit.

I played it again and passed it under 10 minutes but you make a good point there, I will buy it once it reaches Greatest Hits.

I've downloaded 13 or so demos from the PS Store and this was the first time a demo had a timer.

I miss OPM. Not for their bias reviews but for their free discs.

You do know you can play the demo again, right? If I get a game demo of something like that, thats more about the gameplay than anything else, I just keep the demo play it in short bursts for like 10-30 minutes, and move on. Skate's a lot of fun, but so is the Tony Hawk demo (which has a ten minute timer) thats out on the 360. If I had to pick one over the other, I'd probably go for Tony Hawk. If Skate had some stages like Tony Hawk at stuff like the X-games with the big ramps and kickers and stuff, I'd probably go for Skate. But I like doing double 900 flips while grabbing my board in Tony Hawk for millions of points.

I'm thinking I may beat the system and buy last years Tony Hawk for like 20 bucks. According to gamestops website the one from 2005 is only like ten. I quit Tony Hawk at the 4th one, since it seemed like a step backwards from 3. I tried out the second Underground game and it was like Jackass, not bad, but I'd rather play Tony Hawk style skateboarding goals than Jackass pranks on a skateboard.

I liked skate. Based on the demo, I will definitely try and rent the game.

Lucky you! OPM is relaunching under a new publisher. They just announced it yesterday, though I'm not sure when the magazine will start back up or what their policy will be on demo discs.

Isn't the new publisher the same that creates PSM?

So, PSM will now be known as, PlayStation: The Official Magazine under Future US publishing. The same guys who publish Official Xbox Magazine and Nintendo Power.

Wow.

Really? It's funny that all the official magazines come from the same source. Maybe that's good though, and there will be a little less bias all around.
