actually memento is not sci-fi at all. its a thiller and well done. highly recommend.


I have to say though I walked out of Butterfly effect. When they had violence with kids, and actual kids not some 25 year olds acting like there 12, plus the crap with the father filming them...I had to say this movie isn't worth sitting through. Just me, IMO. It runs along the same lines as movies by Larry Clark..not my thing.

Lefarce you should definitely see it, I'm not fond of Ashton Kutcher but I have to say it was a great movie and he did very well.

I think one has to be more objective than that. You can say you don't have the stomach for the subject matter, but you can't say the movie is no good because you don't like its subject matter.

When you use your subjective mindset, it's hard to judge a movie. It's like saying Braveheart is too bloody and you can't sit thru it, but then you go watch Passion of Christ.

When it comes to art mlai it is a matter of taste not truth. Taste varies for each person. In matters of truth there should be much dispute. But not for taste. So for me this movie's use of child actors to portray violence and sexual deviance, made me state, "this movie isn't worth sitting through." IMO
No one has an objective worldview. Everyone has a bias and differing tastes. That is why I stated IMO. Because IMO the movie was offensive.

So why can't I say IMO the movie was offensive?

I'm not denying your right to have a personal opinion. I'm saying you should be more objective and put your personal morals aside when enjoying a movie.

I wanted to rent Natural Born Killers. I was EIGHTEEN. My parents forbade me. They said it's a tasteless movie and would CORRUPT MY MIND.

The fact I still remember this seemingly trivial event shows you how mad I was at them, and how wronged I still feel.

Does my example illuminate what I'm trying to say?

mlai, I understand what you are saying but the truth is no one can be objective when it comes to matters of taste. Movies are entertainment; i.e enjoyment for me. If I don't enjoy watching child actors beating the snot out of other child actors or engaing in sexual activity, then I am not going to watch it. What I think you are trying to say is appreciating the movie or piece of art for what it is trying to do. Given that context I can appreciate this movie or that for what they tried to accomplish but not enjoy the movie or that piece of art.

As alwasys, thanks for the correction TheMidge28. I kinda knew Memento wasn't Sci-Fi, but I seem to remember it deals with memory and how it affects peoples sense of reality, yes?
That's one of the big reasons I finds this particular genre of Sci-Fi facinating, so the genre doesn't matter as much to me as the subject.

And I can understand you walking out on TBE if there was scenes you disagreed with. I have it the same way -to a lesser extent- with hands being damaged. I just can't take it and have to look away. I know it's tricks, and that the actors haven't been hurt the slightest, but I still don't like seeing that scene in Bladerunner...

But, in the movie's defence, I don't know if it could have worked without those scenes.

Oh, and pardon my stupidity, but I'm not sure what IMO stands for. Is it something like "In My Opinion"?

Yes IMO means "In My Opinion"

If you like movies which are thought provoking like Memento try The Machinist if you haven't seen it yet.

Np Sysli. Yeah Midge is right it's more of a thriller, I reccomended it because it deals with memory and it's like one of those movies you need to really pay attention to like Butterfly Effect. It's really REALLY awesome tho. Feel Free to shoot me a PQ if you end up watching it and let me know what you think. The way the movie is shot is so unique and cool I wish I could describe it now but I don't want to give too much away before you see it so i can tell you about some things after you watch it. U can just rent it from any video store.

You also mentioned Naked Lunch in this thread. I really want to watch that movie, I've heared that title tossed around in books and through friends so hopefully I can get to that soon. It's on my list of things to watch and read.

Thanks for the clearification TheMidge28. I never was good at shortened tearms like that. And I'll see if I run into it at some point. Truth be told I haven't seen a lot of movies lately. I've been too busy reading.

And it sounds good joe_vee. I'll try to remember contacting you if I get to see it. But again, reading have taken up a good deal of my time, so it may take a long time.
Hopefully you'll get to see Naked Lunch. I haven't read the book, but it should be really weird and fragmented. The movie shure is strange as it is.

I absolutely hated the Butterfly Effect. Just a few of my issues:

1. Psychopathic Tommy Miller. For some unexplained reason, Tommy Miller is the incredible hulk. Furthermore, the violence is completely out of context. It merely seems excessively bloodthirsty.

2. Not a big fan of child porn.

3. The ending is incredibly lame, and the director's cut even more so.

I liked this better when it was Memento.
