My friends, it is official, we are in an age where Hollywood and other mediums have run out of creative juice nessasary to make ORIGINAL movies. So they feel the need to look back at the past and drag up older movies or media and remake them.

Why spend money on potentially mediocre new ideas when you can get the rights of a well known established name and totally miss the point of it to get an equally mediocre idea with higher profits...?

This is why I say "Fuck Hollywood". I got tired of remakes and sequels and just plain bad movies a long time ago.

I await the day they announce Casablanca 2.
And a remake of Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, To Kill A Mockingbird....give them time. You'll see.
They're already remaking Fright Night. >_> Why the HECK would you remake Fright Night?

And yet one day, making remakes of remakes will be considered edgy. I think there's also a segment of filmmakers out there that grew up with a certain film or style they appreciated and decided they wanted the honor of making their own imprint on the film's identity using that material as if an homage. Of course, what segment they compose versus coke sniffing producers who haven't watched a film or television show since 1980, I couldn't say.

It's not just a perception thing either, even film industry people are tired of it. Basically the money guys are playing by far the greatest role these days, their rise to dominance in the industry is well documented and widely recognised. this isn't the old days of powerful producers and personalities, it's a very different world now, the people making a lot of the decisions tend not to have any creative background at all, most are useless business types with not even a "talent" for that side of things.
Sequels, remakes, and adaptions are safe bets - they will find an audience, they will make money. They've always been around, as you know, but it's worse now than ever. -_-

WHAT?! They can't remake this! It's a cult classic. LAME. I bet Andy Samberg or some other joker will be the "Warriors. Come out and Pllaaaaayyyy!" guy.

The only good thing I see about Hollywood running out of ideas, is that maybe someone in Hollywood will stumble across my webcomic and say, "This is just stupid enough to work". And then pay me a bunch of cash! :)

RichBecause of the extreme vogue for sequels, remakes, and adaptions of already popular work film makers find it extremely difficult to get original movies made at the moment (unless they already have a lot of power). This is mainly a problem in the U.S. where most of the big money for film making comes from.

Edit: Took down the link I put up because it's older than I thought, but basically there seems to be a new Wizard of Oz coming 2010 according to several places I saw via Google. How legit this info is anymore, I'm not sure.

And a remake of Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, To Kill A Mockingbird....give them time. You'll see.
Actually, the Wizard of Oz that we consider the classic wasn't the first movie version of the story. The Exorcist has had two sequels and a prequel released n 2004, plus a remake of sorts that supposedly told the "true story" on TV. To Kill a Mockingbird doesn't have strong enough following for a remake. I also find it kind of funny that all three of these are already adaptations, anyway, and as such, should be subject to the same sort of scrutiny as modern day remakes.

you know what I love? When they call it a "Reboot"
"Let's reboot The Incredible Hulk! Let's reboot Daredevil!"
Let's just reboot every movie that sucked the first time and pretend like the original attempt never happened! And when that reboot sucks too we'll just reboot the reboot!
How can you POSSIBLY go wrong?

It's one of those things you keep reading is "In the works." Meaning they might get around to it in three or for years.

Fight Club 2, but this time, Tyler's a chick played by Megan Fox who seduces the guy imagining her and they start a mud-wrestling club. Don't doubt me. Remember that time they made that movie called "American Psycho"? And that time they made "American Psycho 2" starring Mila Kunis?

I'm pretty sure every single John Carpenter movie is gonna have a remake.

I don't think the "Age of Remakes" began all that recently. As a matter of fact, they've been doing remakes ever since they've been making movies.
Alfred Hitchcock would take one story and milk it for all it was worth. He'd have it as a radio show, make it into a film, put it on stage, and make it into an episode of a TV series. And, this wasn't unusual. It was par for the course.
Think of how many Dracula movies there have been. Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, and so on.
A complete and utter lack of creativity is not something that the film industry has ever lacked.
