I didn't realize they made a miniseries of this until I was watching SciFi's "TinMan" DVD and they showed a preview of it. I'm not a Terry Pratchett fan (I know, blasphemy), but I know a lot of people are, so I thought I would spread the word.

Apparently this is a 2006 British-made miniseries that finally was released straight to DVD in the U.S. Wiki entry here

It's a fabulous, fabulous adaption, too - it's very faithful to the book, and the changes that were ones that had to be made (since film and books are different mediums and all that). Also, since Pterry himself has been involved with it (the credits say he's officially "Tinkered with" the script :P), it still has that distinct Discworldian twist. And tince it's a mini-series rather than a single movie, there's space for more stuff! :)

Warmly recommended to just about anyone. Even my mother, who isn't a Pterry fan, enjoyed it a whole lot.

It's on my short list of "movies to get ASAP". Especially since everyone I've talked with seems to agree they did a good job with it. I'm a huge fan of his books and have even tried to get some of the animated movie adaptations, but haven't managed to yet.
A Roll of the Dice now with full-size pages!

John Clyde now with ten times the tacky Hawaiian shirts!

I must buy this. I saw the show on some obscure channel (thank God for TiVo) around Christmas. Now, I must buy the DVD. And my life will be complete.

Also, I'll finally be able to delete it from my TiVo.

I've been going off Pratchett for a while now. I will still buy this though.

It is a pretty good adaption. The cast is dead on, especially Mr Teatime and the store manager (I forget his name).

Wyrd Sisters was pretty decent, but don't bother with the Soul Music one.

Live action? Wow!
I saw some of the animated ones and they were really quite shitty, even Pratchett thought so. The radio plays on the BBC were simply fantastically adapted! Marvellous. :)

Amazing he hasn't got great big massive movies like that Harry Potter hack... Still, it's lovely that there's so much more diversity in his adaptions. He really was a good author when he started these. His later books are far too preachy and formulaic for my tastes but there are enough great ones among the early books to mark him and the series out as something special.

There's another live action series from 2005, but my friend says it's not very "pratchetty"... Still, I'd like to see both. I saw a bit of the "Wyrd Sisters" and the wretched "Soul Music" animated series. And it wasn't all THAT shitty. Sure, the artwork and the animation SUCKED - and Dibbler seemed WAY off - but other that that it wasn't very painful to watch. And some of the gigs looked cool.

Live action Feet of Clay would be fun. Or Moving Pictures! Not to mention the Nomes Trilogy - though I'm not sure which way I'd like it better: with puppets, like in Fraggle Rock or live action. Oh and Good Omens would be great! Might happen, in the wake of Neil Gaiman's popularity! And for some reason, the Discworld series is my least favorite of Pratchett's writings! lol! I don't know why, but there's something... tiring... about this whole magical-medieval world... Yes, I'm weird!

Odd. The only one I really thought was preachy was Men at Arms. Thankfully, it had Vimes and Carrot in it, so that saved it from being crappy. lol!

If you do a hunt on youtube, you'll find the trailers for the forthcoming live action "The Colour of Magic", starring David Jason, Sean Astin, Tim Curry, Jeremy Irons and Christopher Lee back as the voice of Death.
It airs in the UK right now, and will soon air in the US on Ion Channel.

Nooooooooo! I've seen this and The Colour of Magic, and I found both mildly depressing. There's just something missing in the timing, and the music is inane. Poor casting as well (why David Jason!? Eric Idle will always be Rincewind for me (he voiced him in the pc games)) They're doing Making Money next, and that could work well if they have a decent lead.

I enjoyed both Hogfather and Colour of Magic, but am quited dismayed that they will be doing Going Postal as the next adapation, completely avoiding Mort, Reaper Man, Eric, Moving Pictures and Feet of Clay, which should have been done before Going Postal. Don't get me wrong, I love Going Postal, I just feel that they could have done them in semi-order.

But I definitely think Thud! should definitely be adapted next if they're jumping to Going Postal.

To be fair, they did Hogfather first, and they seem to be randomly jumping around in the continuity.

Maybe with Going Postal they wanted to do a Pterry-adaption without too many wizards in it?

Going Postal, out of all the Discworld books, seems to me like it would make a damn good movie. Especially compared to some of the others.

The problem with adapting comic fiction is that so many jokes come from the narration, which most movies don't have.

I found Hogfather on that random channel a few months ago and taped it for my sister. I may have to check out this dvd. The ion channel wasn't coming in that clearly. I was hoping there'd be more adaptations and I'm glad to hear that there are.

David Jason as Rincewind seems a little weird to me. I thought he was great as Albert, and I'm sure he can act the part, but it doesn't fit the Rincewind in my head. Eric Idle doesn't fit my idea either, though. Anyway, I'll see what I think when I see the movie. I haven't checked out the trailer yet.

Yeah I saw the Hogfather and have yet to see the Colour of Magic.
I do think that there' something about Going Postal that makes it sound like it would be good as a film. I think it's the way Moist von Lipwig does the whole 'dazzle' the crowds and put on a show so they believe what they want kind of thing.

No need to thank me for that. :D
