Tell Some Great Stories About Your Comics

Alright-

I've had a lot of good times with my comics, and I have some things to share.

I'd love it if you shared some too.

Like times where you've heard of people talking about your comics, someone knew who you were, you met a great fan online, or something of that sort.

So share share share!

Here's some of mine-

Possibly the best moment in my life-

I went to K-con last year here in Oregon last year and on the 3rd day I was sitting on the side of the hall with my friend who was so tired.

While to the left of us I had told my friend, like many times before that day, "Here Cody, put this pocky in your pants and get it out with your mouth."

Oh the life of a teenager is so great. Well- as he is in cosplay he attrachs a buncha girls and giggling insues oh ho ho.

So then, the crowd clears and I'm sitting there and I hear this voice and I look up and it's like,
"Excuse me but.."
"Yeah, man?" (Typical talk of mine)
"Are you DCS?"

I sprint up like quick and I go, "OHMYGOSH WHY YES I AM!"

I shake hands with this girl, her name is Hannah and she knows all about my comics.

The best part of that story is she reconised me and read all my comics- I felt so great like the biggest person in the world.

End of that story.

More fans know who I am.

I was talking to a good friend online one day.

She says to me, "You know the best thing happened to me today on the bus, I have to tell you."

I go "Allright lay it on me." (More typical talk of mine)

"Well I was on the bus today and I sat down and these girls were talking in Japanese so I ingored it and pulled out my DS right..."

"Right..."

"So then the other girls leaves and I notice this girl is wearing a scarf like Linder's right (from my comic WIRES) and at the time I had no clue if it was a girl or boy.
So they come over to me, and we start talking about Pokemon and then I said 'This kind of sounds awkward but are you a girl or a boy?'
She's laughs and says it's alright and she says she's a girl and I thought well what the heck I'll ask if she reads DCS's comics, right?"

"Right? And then?"

"She goes 'I LOOOOVE DCS'S COMICS.' And then we talked about it."

"Oh my god I have the best fans in the world."

End of that story.

Well I'm not going to bore you guys with more...

I have a lot of great readers and fans, and they are awesome.

So tell me some of your awesome stories!!

I look forward to it.

(Can't believe I kept forgeting to put that nom. up...)

:O
Your stories beat my stories by a long shot...

But alas, I have a few.

I was walking down the hallway, when all of a sudden, this freshman kid (he's a friend) walks up to me with one of his freshman friends (I'm a sophmore, btw) and he goes, "This is Aaron. He's a comic master!" and I just kinda laughed and said, "No, no, no. I'm an amateur. But thanks for the compliment anyway"

And that was kind of nice.
Uh.

On multiple occasions, I'd bring my comic stuff to draw with for my 4th hour (Algebra) so I'd sit there and draw, and people would crowd around me, watching me draw. So that's kind of cool. Almost everybody in that class read my comic.

And I have tons of memories of drawing. But that's not important.
But I cherish them all...

DCS Someone recognised you based on your comic? That is pretty wild!
I've yet to experience anything like that in real life.
Though I'm always gratified when people tell me they like it over the inter net!

I once was giving away free comics at Stumptown Comics Fest and who should come over to my table and flip through one but Phil Foglio! I told him that it was free and he could take it then he gets this annoyed look and puts it back and say, "No, that's OK."
I got the brush-off from Phil Foglio! How rad is that? I'm thinking if I ever do a reprint of that minicomic I sort of want to put "Phil Foglio hates it!" on the back cover.

Yeah- some of my friends read mine, some of them don't.

I have a lot but sometimes I am surprised by which ones of my friends secretly read it.

It's like-
"So I updated Little Muse today."
"Oh yeah I saw that."
"What you read my comics?"
"Yeah all of them."
"OH MY GOD. YES."

Sometimes making comics just has like the best rewards ever.

Also @patrickdevine: Hell yeah, Oregon rocks, I wonder if I'll ever see you in a comic shop or something ahaha.

One of my friends actively refuses to read my comic.
That always sort of eats at me!

Who is Phil Foglio anyway? I want to go and read Patrick Devine's comic to see what sort of comic a guy I've never heard of hates!

Why would someone EVER want to refuse to read your comic? That's just lame of them, to be honest. Whenever I ask anybody, they just kinda read it. Including hot girls.

I just wiki'd him, and apparently he's some artist from the 50's. His work is fantasy/sci-fi inspired. And uh, yeah.

I went to a meeting of the local writers' guild back when I was unemployed and desperate for social interaction. At the meeting, they went around the table and shared. Many of the members are poets or write non-fiction, and the vast majority are published. One man in the group was immensely talented [en.wikipedia.org]. He was a featured artist in a museum where I volunteered (jaw-dropping art, incredibly detailed, mostly book covers), and had published around 50 books and novels -- mostly sci-fi and fantasy adventure, and a crime drama. He read a short story aloud, and it was really fantastic, humorous and with a fun twist. It was easy to tell how he'd become so successful in his career. I sat politely quiet and actually awed by the talent, like I really didn't belong there.

They got to me, and I had nothing with me. I was sort of happy because I would have felt ashamed to share any of my short stories or a portion of my novels. I introduced myself and said that I wrote as a hobby, mostly fiction adventure. I started to say I had nothing to share... but my hand was resting on my most recent three-ring binder of pages for "Used Books" in rough pencil form, not even the cleaned up digital stuff. (I had it with me just to store paper in.) I bravely sucked up my fear and said I had a portion of the graphic novel I drew in my spare time and that it was crime drama. They asked to see it. I sheepishly passed it to the lady beside me (we had gotten acquainted some) while apologetically explaining that the art wasn't great because I'm still learning.

The fiction author/artist got his hands on the folder very quickly, and I felt a lump in my throat because I know I'm not good and am deathly afraid of rejection. (Hence the reason you won't catch me near the "review" forum.) He said the drawings were "not bad" and asked if I was self taught. I mentioned my influences being a mix of Japanese and American stuff, and he said I had a nice and unique style that didn't have any of the "annoying things" from manga. He then flipped through the pages and laughed aloud at one of the lines. I felt "bigger" that day than I ever felt before.

Ryu are you claiming that you use your comic to pick up chicks?
I'm a married guy but I have to ask...does that work?
I never imagined that posting comics on the internet was a way to become a babe magnet.

Usedbooks that's a nice story. The way you were building it up I was worried it was leading to your horrible rejection so I was genuinely relieved when you told us the happy ending!

Phil Foglio is best known for drawing Girl Genius, it's like The Steampunk webcomic. Phil Foglio is a talented and well-respected artist, and I find the fact that my comic annoyed him at one point really funny. I'm pretty sure it was the Playlist or Pirate mini that he didn't like. I wish I could remember which one it was!

Well, hahahah. Not exactly.

I was once writing a script for something for my comic, and this chick next to me, who I think of as a friend (she's cute) said, "Hey, can I see that?" and so I showed it to her.

She asked what my comic was about, and I tried explaining it to her. She got very confused, very fast. She's one of those blonde preppy girls.

She apparently doesn't think any less of me. So it must be working! Haha

I posted a batman and robin drawing, and someone replied "i like robin better with an afro" (referring to my comic batman and robin kicking names and taking ass)

i replied "hahah thats awesome that you even remembered that"

to which HE replied "its only the greatest comic in the world!"

made my day =)

I was at campus, right at the computer center, i took a seat and started using a computer, what a surprise it was to see a girl sitting next to me browsing drunkduck, i told her: so you like to visit this site ?? and she said she only used to read a handful of comics, so i asked how's this one ?? (pointing to my comic) and she said; i haven't seen that one, so i said, why don't you take a look at it ?? it seems nice (how clever of me) after some minutes she turned to me and said; that's disgusting !!, how can you like this ??? .... darn, after that time i've tried to avoid showing my comic to real life people XD ...

i just hope this can turn into a funny memory for me in the future.

Not much for me either really.
There was a time when my comic was mentioned in a feminist comic forum in a negative light because of one of my ads... But they were nice enough people. The only problem was one of my fans spammed them in retaliation.
I was mortified! T____T
...I mean, it's great to have people stick up for you, but, that's not the way.

When I show anybody my work (friends, family, strangers) then tend to focus on the sexiness and not see much else. I can't relate to that because the sexiness to me is like a background colour- I don't see it in isolation, I don't even see it as a main element, it's just a part of it.
Anyway, because of that it can be awkward showing it off sometimes.
----------------

Regardless, These stories are entertaining! I'm always flattered when people say they like my work. I'd love to meet a bunch of fans. :)
But then I think it'd feel a bit weird too.

Hmmm... I don't know how interesting this story is but...

I was googling Bear VS. Zombies and stumbled across a discussion topic on Snopes.com about my comic. I found it pretty funny because they were discussing various plot points and trying to figure out what was gonna happen next.

It was just strange to me that someone had started a discussion about my silly webcomic.

That's about all, I haven't been doing this very long, so that's the best I've got for now.

It's a Grizzly Bear battling Zombies. Do you need to know more?

That reminds me of another story. I remember seeing a strange referal adress (a blog or something) on my PW stats. When I followed the link, I was taken to an erotic lesbian blog. o_0 They had a button link to Used Books under a favorite links heading on the side. Nearly all the other links were to erotic gay and lesbian sites (not any other webcomics).

I found that memorable and surprising. I was flattered considering 1. all my main characters are heterosexuals and 2. there is very little in regards to romance in my story (an odd link for an erotic site).

I had something vaguely similar when my room mate had a friend he was talking to that said that she liked steampunk and comics, so he showed her my comic. She took a look at the main character and said, "That girl looks like a slut." and immediately stopped reading it. Hey, for me it's already a funny memory!

Ah but my little nephew is my number one fan. I can pretend I actually made something good the way he talks about it. Cheers me up. But I think he's now old enough to know what flattery is. : (

Still I always get a kick out of it when he reads them out loud.
