So today I'm faced with a choice. Fifa 08, GH3 or Orange Box.

Decisions, decisions.
Please, please, you give me too little credit.

yes.

Technically, it does let me online, it just freezes up as I get on.

Here are some preliminary pictures of my unfinished control point level. The basic structure of the level is in, I just need to start dressing it up and making it look nice, as well as iron out any little gaming snags.

The level runs like Dustbowl. It has three rounds, with two control points in each round. The Blue team is staging a hostile takeover of Red's headquarters. It starts with the Blue team emerging from a battleship and taking the docks. Next they work their way through Red's warehouses. Finally, they stage an attack on Red's corporate offices, finally taking the CEO's office in the end.

I hope to get this finished up in the next couple weeks.

Is that to run the intense 3d graphics of MS Word's Wordart?

Heh heh heh.... Strangely enough, I haven't opened up MS Word at work yet, but I'm sure I'd bet a blazing-fast framerate. We mostly use graphic-related programs like Maya, Softimage, and Painter, and Photoshop.

Is there even an option here? I was under the impression that if you could buy a good game, a mediocre game, and a crap game, you would always buy the good game.

Shplane has never played any of the games you've mentioned, Bek.

FIFA 08 is a great game, but, if you are not a football fan you probably won't like it, at all. It'd be like an RPG fan buying Madden. Since you listed it I'm sure that you like football. Guitar Hero 3 is great game as well, it'll give you hours of entertainment. Not my cup of tea as I hate all rhythm games based solely on the fact that I suck at them. If you like guitars and good songs, get that.

The Orange Box, well, if you've already played the entire Half Life 2 series and Episodes, then you won't find much here. The brief three hours of Portal and the fun Team Fortress 2 will give you hours of entertainment. I could say Fortress is worth the price stand-alone, but no, eventually all games get boring no matter what.

Also, Hawk. That almost looks like something out of Valve themselves. I do hate the textures for the ocean floor in the first picture though.

Actually, I HAVE played GH3, and I've played PLENTY of games that are basically the same thing as FIFA. Orange Box I admit I have never played, but with all the "FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP" I see everyone throw at it, I assumed that it was better than two other games I've played that were shitty and mediocre.

FIFA, being a sports game, is basically just a rehash of every other sports game of its type. And they have all either sucked or really sucked, and the only reason anyone liked them is because they were fans of the sport.

As for GH3, it's basically GH1 and GH2 with the devil. Sure, the music on GH games is cool, and it's a bit fun to play a game of that kind sometimes, but it's not really anything to spend twice the price of other games so you can have the game AND the guitar. If you want to listen to music, get a damn MP3 player.

tl;dr Orange Box CAN'T be worse than these other games, quite simply because FIFA is only popular because the sport it's based on has a lot of fans, and GH3 is only popular because GH1 and GH2 were popular.

You're kind of boiling things down and out of proportion, Lord Shplane. I think the bottom line is that GH3 and FIFA are not the kind of games that appeal to you, so you're not seeing the merit they have. I don't know anything about FIFA, but I'll say that GH3 stands on its own as a solid guitar rhythm game. A person can quibble over song selection or unlockable characters, but it's as solid as the last two were and every bit as valid. Plus, it doesn't cost twice as much as other games if you're not buying the guitar with it.

But you're right about one thing for sure: the Orange Box is far better than the other two choices.

Thanks. Yeah, you do have a point about that texture. I may look for a more appropriate one soon, or even just make my own if I can't find one.

That ship rocks man ^^
I know it's made in a cartoony style to fit the game, but the look reminds me of some of the prototype designs the Soviets were planning to build after WW2

Hawk, I demand that we all get to playtest your map at once.

I'd definitely try to make maps if I wasn't so caught up in learning blender.

I think I'm going to go with the FIFA, because I do enjoy football games. But only with a friend.

That and my friend is getting me the Orange Box because I got him a Pearl Jam album the other week and hes returning the favor, but with double value. So technically I'm getting both.

:D

I have the Orange Box, but I can't seem to get online with TF2. :( So I haven't played it yet.

Fixed the problem. I finally got around to playing it, and it is awesome.

If anyone's interested in playing me, my Steam ID is "lizardbite"

For anybody interested, I've put up a beta version of my new map that people can play. Here are some screenshots of it:

And you can download it here:
http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/48067

Just unzip the file to your Team Fortress 2\tf\maps directory. And tell me what you think. I'm open to suggestions for improvement.

I've recently got Orange Box and tried out the games. So far, so good. I've beat Episodes 1 and 2, stuck at Portal, and haven't started Team Fortress 2 yet.
But by how episode 2's fps crawled to 0.2fps during the G-Man encounter and at the ending brings me to doubt that I'll be able to enjoy TF2 without very inconvenient lag.

And sweet lord, I love the way battleship looks. I'll try it out when I get into TF2.

The map is very nice. My only problem is the invisible wall that keeps players from crossing the water. You've got posts there to mark where the wall is, but I think you should add a wire fence or something between them.

If you're running at a high enough version of directX (i.e., if your graphics card is good enough) there will be ropes running from post to post. Maybe I should just run some planks across instead so people of any level of graphics can see the boundary.

Eh, games suck my soul dry. I got caught up in HL ep 1&2... And now I'm doing HL 2 as well o_O Damn you Orange box and your tempting orange cover!

So I'm forcing myself not to play any of the games on it for a while, that includes Portal and TF2. :(

I purchased the Orange Box a long while back...Portal was amazing, albeit short, Half-Life 2 was it's regular old, great Half-Life 2 self...and TF2, well I have mixed opinions on this game. It's an incredible game in every way...provided you have fun people to play with. If I'm not playing with people I actually know and can communicate with verbally, then I have to join a server hoping that I'll find a talkative bunch. And that never seems to happen. Either I find quiet people, or really annoying people who spam their mics. I just wish more of my friends played.

Oh, and Hawk, speaking from another mapper's point of view here....that map looks incredible. Great job!
