I mainly made this thread because almost every thread ends up getting pulled into a discussion about the merits of various systems. So I decided to make a thread just for that. Hopefully it will curb some of the derailing.

EDIT: Discuss the things that people say. Don't attack that person because of what they said. I've had to put this here because it happened. So yeah, don't do it.

Anyway, here's where I stand.

PS3: Current favorite system.

Pros- Best Graphics. Discs are more difficult to scratch (just found this out recently). Plenty of good exclusive games if you look for them. Free online service. Most cross-platform games are slightly better on the PS3

Cons- Expensive as hell. Very few people actually have one, so online play is limited as compared to other systems.

XBox 360: It's Ok, but I like the PS3 better

Pros- Good Graphics, though not as good as the PS3. Slightly better variety of games than PS3, but not by much. Halo, I suppose. More people have one, thereby allowing a wider variety of people to play with online.

Cons- Pay to play online. Most good games are cross-platform. Halo attracts a lot of idiots to play online. Cross-platform games are overall not quite as good on the 360 than they are on the PS3.

Wii: I'm very dissapointed with this system.

Pros- Cheap. Lots of exclusive games, as Nintendo tends to do that.

Cons- Over-reliance on Wiimote gimmick leads to lowered storyline, graphics, and overall quality in games. Cross-platform games tend to suck on the Wii, due to the fact that the Wiimote does not work very well with most games. Very little online play. Too many minigame collections. Poor graphics as compared to other systems. Less powerful hardware as compared to other systems.

Now for handhelds.

PSP: I like my PSP, but am not overly in love with it or anything.

Pros- Some really good games if you look for them. Better graphics than previous handheld systems.

Cons- No actual online play, despite the fact that it can connect to the internet. Not quite as many good games as I would like (Despite the fact that the good ones are really damn good).

DS: Not sure, I've barely ever played the thing. I'll say what I can tell just from looking at it and listening to what others say though.

Pros- Lots of Nintendo exclusive games (I happen to like a lot of Nintendo's characters) Also, I think it has better online play than the PSP, though I'm not sure having rarely actually played it.

Cons- Touchscreen looks like it will cause similar problems to those faced by the Wii due to the Wiimote.

Are you serious? Half of the ps3's library is mutli-console and the exclusives the PS3 does have aren't that great. Heavenly Sword is kinda cool but what else is there? Gundam? That sumarai game with the giant crab where you must STRIKE HIS WEAK POINT FOR GREAT DAMAGE! Tokyo Game Show pretty much displayed THE ps3 game I want (Little Big Planet) but I'm going to wait for the reviews. If I must shell out 600 bux for that game... I will.

Personally, I think the Wii is garbage. There's too much focus on "party" games and the entire thing seems like a huge gimmmick to me. I don't have any other friends that play videogames and the Wii's strong singleplayer games (Paper Mario, Zelda, and Metroid) just aren't strong enough for me to say anything nice about the system. I've played all the games on the virtual console MULTIPLE times and I wish Nintendo would actually sign up games that haven't been rereleased a billion times or played by everyone who even owned a SNES for a year (Super Metroid? Mario Kart?? Next...)

As far as handhelds go, I'm a PSP man. I've got the thing modified like crazy and I play all my old SNES and C64 roms on it. Plus, I like the game selection. A lot more RPGs like Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Crisis Core (I've got the Japanese version and it's amazing) and Brave Story plus all the quirky puzzle games like Loco Roco. I love the widescreen and high resolution as well as the cd quality music. The battery time is a minor annoyance but I bought a new battery that gets about 8 or 9 hours out of it.

Oh yeah, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood + Symphony of the Night in one package = hells yes. Let's not forget Loco Roco 2 and the incredibly awesome looking Patapon.

I don't mind the DS, but not enough attention is paid to the touch screen. Some of the more unique games like Hotel Dusk, Touch Detective, Sim City DS, Contact, and Drawn to Life are unique and fun, but for the most part the system relies on Nintendo to back it up. If it weren't for Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart 64, all the system would have are bad 3rd party titles... like a terrible port of Settlers, Mage Knight, and LUMINOUS ARC or whatever it's called. Blech.

I will admit that a lot of the games aren't out yet. But there are plenty of good ones coming out, and already a few good ones. I'll edit a list into this post in a second.

EDIT: Ok, I'm too lazy for an actual list. I will, however, say that I was partly wrong. The 360 DOES have a larger exclusive game library. It's just that most of the games on it look like they'll be shit.

I was also wrong about something else. Almost all of the good exclusives for the PS3 aren't out yet. This angered me.

Also, Armored Core 4 isn't PS3 exclusive. I thought it was.

Oh well, it'll still be slightly better on the PS3.

The only exclusive PS3 game I want is Little Big Planet. All the rest of the PS3 games I want are available on the Xbox360 which is a lower price. All the games I want the MOST are on the Wii, which I've been enjoying a lot lately. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption proves that the Wiimote works (as if previous games didn't).

If the PS3 lowered its price to $400, I'd have a really tough decision on whether to buy the Xbox360 or PS3. But as it stands, the 360's looking like the better choice and the PS3 looks like it's in a very rocky situation, just waiting for that Metal Gear game and more Final Fantasy.

Handhelds:

My DS Lite has provided more fun for me than any other handheld. I wouldn't trade it for any other system. It has a dynamite library of creative and fun games that just wouldn't be possible anywhere else.

The PSP Slim is a little tempting (now that it has a TV Out) but I'm so distracted with my DS and all its games that there's no point in picking one up right now. And while the PSP has some good games, there's not a single one that I must have.

All the multi-console games that I've read reviews for have been noticeably worse on the ps3. The Darkness suffered from frame rate issues, Oblivion had better graphics but more bugs, etc... Also, the 360 has award points or whatever. They don't mean anything except bragging rights, but when you think about it, what does a 100 yard pass in madden on the PS3 mean? Nothing. But on the 360, it'll net you 10 gamer points or whatever. A lot of people like getting the most out of their games, and Microsofts inclusion of award points was pretty damn genius of them because they're catering to that huge group of MUST GET EVERYTHING gamers.

And I don't know what 360 exclusives you're looking at either. Halo 3, Halo Wars, Mass Effect, and Lost Oddysee are slated for release by the end of the year or early next year and they already have over a million preorders for both of them (Mass Effect and Halo 3 multi-million). Even the PS3 "exclusives" have jumped the gun. Microsoft paid rockstar several million dollars to develop 360 exclusive downloadable scenarios that supposedly feature 20-30 hours of gameplay each (which I honestly think is an exaggeration), Bioshock was pulled from the PS3 (you guys are missing a piece of history here!), and Assassin's Creed is no longer PS3 exclusive.

I'm not saying the PS3 is a bad system, I just think Sony jumped the gun a little when releasing it. The hardware is expensive and powerful, but there's hardly anything that warrants paying so much for the console itself. The six-axis control was an incredible idea, but what games actually use it properly? I hear Lair controls like crap and the only thing you can do in Heavenly Sword is direct an arrow. Whopee.

But honestly, it's got some cool crap coming out soon with Folklore, Little Big Planet (MUST OWN), and MGS4 but even within it's first year, the 360 had some great titles worth purchasing and so far all Sony has to show for their system is... well, nothing. Our opinions are obviously different, but most of us just have to wait to see what stuff comes out on the PS3 because it's pretty slim pickings.

I've been playing more on the PS3 recently than on the 360. Although I did pick up Warriors Orochi recently, its' kind of sad the only games I've gotten into on the 360 have been PS2 ports or budget titles. Even Blue dragon I've found pretty disappointing and I'll end up waiting on the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata. If it weren't for Warriors Orochi, the system would be used exclusively for watching HD-DVDs these days. Unfortunately, the next few months don't look too promising for new software, either.

In the meantime, though, I have gotten pretty hooked on Warhawk (the first time in years I've actually had fun playing an online shooter), Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and I will get around to beating Heavenly Sword at some point. In fact, my PS3 library just recently grew larger than my 360 library. With some of the new games hitting the system this holiday season, that trend will likely continue.

The Wii has been collecting dust for the past two months. Never really liked the Metroid Prime series, so I didn't pick up the latest one. I found Zelda too easy and Super Paper Mario was just crap. For the most part I'm finding the motion sensitive controls just don't work well, even in the games which do use them appropriately.

What kind of games do you like playing because I can most likely recommend you some.

Currently, all of my systems are collecting dust:

I merely utilize my PS3 to download demos and by the way---PSM should initiate adding a demo disc to their magazine. I am tired of waiting an avg. of 2-hours for a demo that just isn't worth it.

As for my Wii, I simply make use of it to participate in the voting process. Turns out everyone's opinion sucks but mine because I always lose... or win in my point of view. Though kudos on its excellent internet browser, without a shout of a doubt the best browser on any system.

And last but definitely least, my PSP. It's been over a year and we're still talking about its potential. Pff, call me when they release MGS: PO2.

PS3: Too expensive, nothing I want on it to justify it. The system is ugly to boot.

X-Box 360: Too expensive currently, and not enough games that appeal to me. With a price drop and at least two or three awesome games, I'll get one.

Wii: Awesome.

DS: I love this handheld more than any other system I've played, barely edging out the SNES.

PSP: A portable whose soul purpose was to help Sony bounce back from their UMD failure? No thanks.

PS3: Too expensive. Only Metal Gear 4 justifies purpose.

Xbox360: Eh, my Xbox works just fine. Not sure if I want to upgrade yet for a more improved version of the same old hardware. Only game I want is Test Drive Unlimited.

PS2: Still as awesome, no useless Blu-Ray.

Wii: Scarface proved to me that if developers take time in coming up with a great control scheme, then a standard game can become an excellent game. I don't know why everyone says that everything on the Wii is a party game, there's only like what, eight party-titles on the Wii. The graphics are as good as an Xbox, and that still creates pretty amazing graphics given how much developers work at it. They're more than "two gamecubes taped together" or "playstation graphics, lol". Excellent browser.

The online and adding friends is a mess, it should be ditched. Nintendo fucked up on this SD Card thing, Hardware is too under-advanced to appeal to hardcore gamers that want complex equations and High-Def. Placement of the sensor bar is a big issue. Developers think they could just port everything onto the system.

PSP: Jebus, the hardware can do some amazing things, yet the library is crap. Sony should stop trying to market the PSP as a fashion item and start actually creating content for it.

PS3 - havent played it much. The times I did I never really cared for it. I do agree the graphics are pretty but thats about all that I have seen from it. Although, I also agree that Little Big Planet looks interesting.

XBOX 360 - have played it many times and its good. However, there really aren't that many games that I care for on this system so it's kept me from purchasing it.

Wii - Love the system. Sure, there are some glitches in motion sensors at times depending on the game, but I think the Wiimote has added an element to gaming that goes beyond just sitting there with a controller in your hands. Zelda was awesome, albeit a little easier than expected. I have the Godfather and the controls for it are pretty killer in my opinion.

Handhelds: only one ive gotten recently was the PSP and that was for christmas (didnt even ask for it lol). Aside from when i needed to use it last year for travel time boredom on the subway, its basically collected dust.

One thing important for us all the realize is that the first year of any console's life is generally pretty crappy. The launch games are ALWAYS rushed and don't use the system to the full potential, then there's a dead period where you get no games, or crappy games.

I don't think a console's life really starts until a year after its launch. That's when you can start expecting the good games.

I've played the Folklore demo. It am fun.

I keep hearing about Little Big Planet, but have yet to actually look anything up about it.

MGS4. Everyone talks about that one. I've never really played too many games in that series, so I don't really know. It sounds good though.

Armagedon
Zelda was awesome, albeit a little easier than expected.

I really wish I had gotten the Gamecube version of that. I had far less fun with the controls on that one than any of the other Zelda games because of the Wiimote.

There are some pretty good games for it. Monster Hunter Freedom is awesome, though I doubt any of you have ever heard of it. Ys, Ark.. something... really long name that I can't remember is pretty good, but it's also an obscure game. The Armored Core game they had on it was allright, not as good as console AC games, but what do you expect, it's a handheld? Brotherhood of the Blade was good (They're coming out with one for the PS3 that I'll probably get eventually).

Yeah, I can't remember any more just right now. So I guess they don't have too many. Honestly though, I would buy the thing just for MHF, and MHF2 that's coming out later. Seriously, if you have PSP, buy that game.

All the PSP gets is PS2 hand-me down ports. Although that has started to change with more original games coming out for it, like Syphon Filter, Dead Head Fred, and God of War. The library is still dry, in fact, the only game I played last year was Burnout Legends. The rest were just stripped away PS2 ports and some other horrid games.

I must congratulate Sony on one thing, the PSP is really tough.

I've abused my PSP, I've thrown it carelessly into my backpack and I've dropped it a few couple of hundred times. After that much abuse, everything still works. I'm surprised that the only thing broken on my PSP is the joystick, which happened after some long and extensive gameplay. Sadly, the broken joystick makes it impossible to play games or use the internet.

Hehe, I like it when people say this because it isn't true at all. Granted, opinions always differ, but I found an interesting website that dispels this theory.

People have been trying to make console games on handhelds for years and when they finally pull it off, it's all "oh they are just remakes". Personally I think a portable console experience is pretty damn cool.

And this is 100% true. Look at some of the Gameboy's lineup. Tetris? Mario Land and the 6 golden coins? Metroid II? Kid Icarus? Crystalis? Link's Awakening?? Sure you can call these "handheld originals" but when you look at them, they're nothing more than stripped down versions of their console brothers. True Fact: The gameboy advance has more ports and remakes than ANY other console. It's first 2 years, Nintendo pretty much marketed it as "portable snes lol." Then the next 2 years they marketed it as "20$ gets you a bad port of a nes game lol."

As far as "remakes" go, take a closer look at the DS game lineup. Seriously, how many of those haven't you played before? Are things like Mario Kart, and Mario 64, and NSMB, and Metroid, and Castlevania, and Advance Wars, and Animal Crossing, and Tetris, and Tony Hawk, and WarioWare supposed to be new?

And I think this is also true. Castlevania has changed little since they adapted the Metroidvania style. Advance Wars has always been pretty much the same since Famicom Wars 20 years ago.

And finally

And let's look at reviews. Gamerankings has 24 PSP games ranked over 80% versus 21 for the DS (3 of which are the same game, Nintendogs). But that's when people start claiming reviews are skewed...strange.

This was taken as of last month. The original statistic was taken by some blogger in January 07 when the PSP had 21 games over 80% compared to the DS's 17 or something. When he posted that, every Nintendo fanboy flamed him for "skewed reviews."

The PSP has a lot of good games but there's one major problem about it's library that you pointed out: it's never advertised. When Nintendo makes a game, you pretty much instantly know about. When Phantom Hourglass comes out, it'll be on the display case of every store shelf. But when a new PSP game comes out, who the heck the cares? It rarely appears in magazines and it doesn't take up any space shelf because Sony has too many 3rd party developers and these guys don't really care about their handheld products or they don't feel the need to tell people about them.

And then Sony refuses to market the PSP's best feature; it's homebrew. I've got my PSP tricked out with custom homebrew. I can play 90% of my ps1 library on my PSP. I've got every NES, Genesis, SNES, c64, SCUMM, *insert console older than 1995 here* on my PSP. I can download flash games and play them. I can create animated gifs from the games I play. The PSP is a serious piece of hardware but Sony needs to stop modeling it as a fashion piece and take it as a serious piece of gaming power. Considering the price drop to 150bux and the new line of RPG's coming out (Jeanne D'Arc and Brave Story by the way, are fantastic) I hope the little thing starts to get more attention.

Although right now it's hardware and software sales exceed the 360, PS3, AND the Wii (although the Wii will no doubt catch up by the end of the year).

I seriously doubt it. I'm not some newbie when it comes to gaming. I do tend to keep up with new releases and I buy games frequently based on what looks interesting (and yes, I also keep up with some pretty obscure titles). I've tried the majority of the top rated games on the system and found the majority of those highly disappointing and overrated.

One thing important for us all the realize is that the first year of any console's life is generally pretty crappy.

What happened with the 360, then. It's been two years and its library is STILL crappy.

Generally major corporations don't like to advertise when their device can be used for piracy. Considering how many lawsuits would follow such an advertising campaign, I don't blame them.

I agree there. I haven't seen any PSP advertisements since those squirrels. I loved those guys though, not sure why.

They should advertise the living shit out of MHF2. That would probably help a lot.

Well, it's hard for me to get into specifics since I don't own a 360, but you do have to admit that its library is better than either the Wii or PS3 right now, don't you?

I'm sure I could rattle off a list from Bioshock to Rainbow 6: Vegas, and you've got your reasons that it's not a good library.

Why all the hate on the Wiimote? I would expect the Wii to be the only console capable of handling FPS games the way it's meant to be played.

And don't tell me "The targeting doesn't work as well as advertised on paper." The targeting works 100% fine. I play shooting minigames on the Wii and have no problems getting high scores. And my targeting reticule NEVER wanders off the screen.

FIGHT current chapter: Filling In The Gaps
FIGHT_2 current chapter: Light Years of Gold

Even if the targeting works perfectly, I still prefer the normal controller. I simply enjoy my joystick and labled buttons. I don't like the whole "Whoo!! I can point at things!!" gimmick. Hell, I haven't liked any of the other types of controls that have been introduced. I didn't like any of the sensor gun things that they've had, I didn't like Donkey Konga, I only barely liked Guitar Hero, and I fucking despise DDR. Hell, I don't even like the Syxaxis or whatever they call it on the PS3 controller.

I don't really know why. I just don't like them. And I wish game developers would just stop making them, and focus on making better games that work with normal controllers.

If you like the stuff, then ok, go ahead and buy them. I kind of wish you wouldn't though, because decreased sales would cause them to stop being made. I guess I can't make everyone stop likeing them though.

Even if the targeting works perfectly, I still prefer the normal controller. I simply enjoy my joystick and labled buttons. I don't like the whole "Whoo!! I can point at things!!" gimmick. Hell, I haven't liked any of the other types of controls that have been introduced.

I am the exact opposite. I despise FPSs due to the standard control scheme. Why the fuck am I aiming with two joysticks? It feels weird. I can understand that being the norm in the 90s... maybe. But with the technology to use motion in games, we should be embracing it, not playing the role of "we fear change". Sorry joystick jockeys, your cumbersome methods are going to need to change. The dual-stick method was the worse thing to ever happen to FPSs. Motion control needs to become the standard.

Now the victors aren't just the people who get the nuances of some backwards control scheme, now it's about actually being able to be skilled with your aim. Real skill, not being able to fumble with some form of control that doesn't even resemble shooting.

As for the specialty controllers, those often make for some of the greatest games I've played. Guitar Hero can't be played without the guitar, it wouldn't make sense. The touch screen on the DS really works wonders, and Phantom Hourglass looks amazing for it. Hell, DDR's pad is pretty damn cool too. It's not quite dancing, but it takes some skill to get some of the steps down.

I'd rather see better games with more active control-schemes based on motion technology and other imput than I would the same stuff that people like you are so keen on, needlessly complex button combinations and focus on keeping things in the status quo.

After playing Metroid Prime 3, I've come to the belief that for games to truly evolve, you need to experiment. Corruption is perhapse the best first-person experience I've ever had in any videogame. Hell, any FPS could benefit from Prime 3's controls.

I'll probably never understand the whole thing about the console wars. Especially where people will defend their preferred console "to the death"... Personally, I don't care what console I'm playing a game on. It just has to be a lot of fun to play. :)

The only PS3 exclusive that looks great has to be Uncharted. I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet.

I'm hoping metal gear solid 4 goes to the 360. I like my xbox controller more than I do any other. Its just so heavy and black, and fits my hands so well. I tried playing on an snes a few weeks ago and it cramped my gigantic man hands.

If that happened, I would stop gaming. Period. I would probably then kill myself.

I don't care if it resembles shooting. If I want to shoot, I'll go get a gun and shoot things. I want to play a game, and I enjoy playing the game using the joysticks more than I do motion detection.

And anyway, how does it not take skill to use a normal controller? I know that it does, because I don't have those skills. I almost never win at FPS's. I'm horrible at them. So it's not like I'm trying to keep things how they are so that I'll win, because it won't help me win. I'll lose anyway. I want things to stay how they are so that I can enjoy the games more.

Like I said, Guitar Hero is the only one that I've even remotely liked.

I guess it wouldn't. But that usually isn't the case.

The touch screen is the main reason I didn't want the DS. I like Pokemon just fine without having to poke the little guys.

I hate DDR. I honestly want to kill whoever designed it. It's basically just pushing buttons with your feet. It doesn't have any story or gameplay. It's just jumping on buttons in a certain order. Makes me sick.

Needlessly complex button combinations? DDR and Guitar Hero are entire games based on nothing but that.

"Same stuff"? Yes, the controls are pretty much the same in most games of the same genre. But why do you need to change them? They're just fine how they are. And innovation can come in all kinds of places, like in storyline and graphics. It doesn't have to come from the controls.

Yes. Experiment. But when something fails, you throw it aside. It's how evolution works. If an organism evolves a negative trait, it dies. Eventually, people will see how negative of a trait these things are, and kill them. Most of the people I know and like already dislike the Wii. Most of the people I know and like are gamers. Gamers are the only ones that are going to be willing to spend the enormous amounts of money that game systems are starting to cost. Eventually, game developers will realize that they need to stop trying to make everyone like games (which is impossible), and start focusing on those of us that already do.

I don't actually play FPS's very often. I'm more of an RPG person. But I would have to say that the best FPS I've played so far would actually have to be Resistance. It's the only FPS that I've actually played through without getting bored and finding the all weapons/invincibility/infinite ammo cheat and just running around like crazy killing everything. And I know I wouldn't like it on the Wii, because I've played FPS's on the Wii. I played for an hour, got bored, and never put them back in the system.

Also, I've played Halo and Halo 2, and I can honestly say that I like Resistance more.

I would expect the Wii to be the only console capable of handling FPS games the way it's meant to be played.

Actually, the PS3 is the ONLY console capable of handling FPS games the way they're meant to be played because it is the ONLY console which natively supports USB mice and keyboards.

And don't tell me "The targeting doesn't work as well as advertised on paper." The targeting works 100% fine.

Targetting is less of an issue than delayed response. Many games can't handle interpreting motion control input on the fly, so you get a slight delay between what you do and what happens on screen.

Motion control needs to become the standard.

Sorry to break it to you, but motion control in FPS's isn't functionally any different than the dual stick approach. The only difference is that you point one stick at the screen, you still have all the same limitations of the "cumbersome" two stick approach and none of the benefits of using a mouse.

Hell, any FPS could benefit from Prime 3's controls.

I would argue against that, particularly since the developers saw it as a poor control scheme for multiplayer.

And whoever said a mouse is the way a FPS is meant to be played? A mouse is used because it comes stock with a computer.
A game which centers around you toting a gun should have controls which involves you aiming.

Are you saying that this is an insurmountable Wii hardware limitation, or just that developers haven't yet used it to full capacity?

Sounds like status quo talking to me. Same problem as shplane except you're better informed.

Well all I know is that the aiming on Metroid Prime 3 works, and it works well. I was one of those guys who just opted to stay away from console FPS games (except Goldeneye and Turok 2) just because console controllers aren't built for them. They're children of a controller built to play Mario 64. If you really wanted a console controller for playing FPS games, it would probably have a trackball on it.

With how well Metroid Prime 3 works, I could stand to play more FPS games. In fact, I guess it also makes me excited for future Wii games made with the same love and care. So far the Wii (like most new consoles) has had mostly rushed-to-launch games and quick opportunist cash ins, but the good games are finally here this holiday season. I say that if you've judged the Wii already, you've judged it too soon. (PS3 also, but it's the Wii under attack right now)

Lord Shplane, I can understand you being perfectly happy with the established setup. I can also understand your dislike for those novelty games with unique controllers, as that's all a matter of taste. But new, innovative forms of gaming will not make your traditional forms of gaming go away. After all, we're still seeing 2D sidescrollers and Tetris various despite 3D being the status quo now. I think you can expect RPGs to remain relatively unchanged (I think they're actually stagnating).

Expanding the videogame market is a good thing for everybody. There was a time with I hated the fact that Halo, GTA, and Guitar Hero were bringing in stupid non-gamers (the guys who made fun of gamers only years before), but I've changed my mind on that. The more people accept videogames, the better. We won't be getting so many grandparents and stale adults scorning our hobby because they don't understand it.
