Does anyone like a really good super spoof? I know I do. There's the stuff we all now about like The Tick, Flaming Carrot, Super Globetrotters, etc. Then there's the really obscure ones like UltraChrist and Hero Camp. Any good ones you've heard of: movie, webcomic, anime, comic book, Saturday morning bit, post them here!

The Cockroach from Cerebus is a personal favorite. So is the character who ripped him off. Chuck and probably Spang know what I'm talking about.

If you can find a copy I'd suggest:

"The Mad Book of Almost Superheros"

It's out of print, but quite funny. I bought a copy at a used bookstore some time ago.

I got that movie from Netfilx recently. It was pretty entertaining, but not much on special effects.

For superhero parody movies, my favorite is "Mystery Men." The comic is very different, but also good. It's by the same company that does "Flaming Carrot."

Mystery Men was the best super Hero comedy movie ever. :D

As far as TV, I loved Greatest American Hero (1982-83) and Misfits of Science. :-D

I also have these videos called Legends of the Superheros (circa 1979) [legionsofgotham.org] featuring Batman, Robin, Black Canary, Hawkman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Captain Marvel, Sinestro, Soloman Grundy, the Riddler, and a host of others. It's very campy, very poorly written. Even has a laugh track. But I loved it when I was a kid, and it still brings a smile to my face. :D

I've met Mystery Men/Flaming Carrot creator Bob Burden on several occassions since his a local to my area. Most of his fans are more into Flaming Carrot though. They recently started a new series with Image and Desperado Publishing, including a new photo special which was taken at Dragon-Con.

The Mystery Men movie though didn't live up to the expectations of alot of people involved, including the fans. Burden wanted to do a Flaming Carrot movie, or a Mystery Men movie with Flaming Carrot in it, but the special effects weren't up to his ideas at the time.

I feel The League of Intergalactic Cosmic Champions worked as a superhero parody (as well as a Star Trek/Star Wars/47 other things parody).

The sadly ended Captain Greyhound (done by the gal who now does Darken)

Supermegatopia Warning! Features nekkid boobies!

The Green Avenger , Mechagical Girl Lisa A.N.T , & Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki are pretty funny as well.

In print comics...

Marvel's Damage Control (Three 4-issue miniseries about a company that repairs the damage cuased by superheroes & villains) & The Awesome Slapstick (One 4-issue miniseries about a kid who uses his powers to play pranks on evil).

I also liked Lightning Comics Fatman The Human Flying Saucer (Anyone even heard of this? Probably not, since it came out in the '60s and only lasted 3 issues.)

There are probably others, but I can't remember them at the moment.

Invincible definitly has elements of parody in there, especially with their superhero league (which lasted for one issue...)

Actually, I just read in Wizard that IDW Publishing is bringing back Hero Happy Hour this summer.

Notice how since The Incredibles came out that there's been a steady increase in superhero parodies in comics? Two other ones to look into are Grounded and Archenemies.

Edward Penishands [en.wikipedia.org]

Assuming that Edward Scissorhads was a superhero level hairdresser/topiarist.

There are these really cool Swedish superheros called Kapten Sverige (featuring in a movie this summer!) and Kapten Stofil.

Kapten Stofil, the preserver of the old-fashioned!

The Anomalies is a surprisingly well done photo comic. Personally, I like their occasional guest star, Mister Powerful.

It's not a super hero parody, but it's mine, so I'm going to plug it: Chocolypse Now!

Yeah, apparently it was Marvel or DC. You'd think the phrase superhero would be generic though. Maybe if they said "super-hero".

Scruffy
they both seem to own the right to the word "superhero"
Yes, that's quite weird. I think it's down to the flat out pig ignorance of the imbecile at the registry office that didn't realise how generic the term actually was. It'd be piss-easy to challange them and take the rights away, it's just that nobody does it because of the needless expense and the fact that you'd be throwing the money away if you tried: You'd be paying a LOT of money for the right to make something free.

What it needs is a couple of nerdy lawyers who're comic fanatics to do it off their own bat.

I can't imagine Stan Lee going to court bitching about how the term "superhero" is his and Marvel's personal bitch.

Onto other parodies, check out Thong Girl! http://www.stubbytv.com/ThongGirl.html

Though whole "superhero is a copyrighted term" is, sadly, the result of a court decision. Marvel and DC sued each other for ownership of the term. The judge's response was semi-sensible, in that he decided neither one of them could own the term. Instead, he awarded joint ownership.

Would that hold up to another legal challenge? Speaking as not-a-lawyer, I don't think so, but I don't see any of us small fries spending the money to find out.

Bleah.
