Speed runs?

I love watching speed runs of games. Especially ones that are insane like Contra or Ikagura or watching a guy just obliterate Demons Crest. Its especially impressive to see speedruns that are just that: incredibly fast playthroughs of games. I'm no loser when it comes to gaming, but some of this videos are insane. I know at least a percentage of them are spliced together or use cheats or exploits, but its still damn impressive to see one play out.

You tube has a lot of great ones, but its been around long before you tube. It was just a pain in the ass to download and watch. What do you guys think? Some of the more impresive ones I've found is a level 1 ramza beating velius in final fantasy tactics. The dark demon being utterly beaten in Demons Crest. Anything that moves fast like Contra is impressive, but seeing Shattered Soldier beaten as quickly and as flawlessly as these guys do, makes me feel like I'm less of a gamer. Like I could never memorize everything the way that they have.

For starters:

I feel its a badge of honor having just BEATEN Ikagura. This guy is playing with both ships, and dominates the crap out of the game.

I saw a great speed run for the first Metroid in which the player skipped most of the powerups and one of the bosses. It was really pretty clever and fun to watch, and I had no idea the game could be beaten so fast. I think it was like 17 minutes or something, though it's been a long time since I saw it.

Wait, you can't skip a boss in the NES Metroid. In order to access Mother Brain's lair, you have to activate statues of the 2 bosses, which can only be done if the bosses are dead.

That's the kicker!

This guy lured a flying enemy into the door from the previous room, brought him into the bridge area, and froze him at a place that allowed him to cheat his way past the statues area.

Here, I found part of the video... It happens near the end:

I thought that this speed run was amazing, even though massive flaws were exploited and it was run on an emulator with savestate and slow-down. Still, the skills used in the second Bowser level are awesome in their own right.

Also, I hate shooting game speed runs. I can never stand all the jumping.

Man... I did a great one of those in Ghost in The Shell on the Playstation 1, including the time trial level things, that was awesome... I even taped it, because I'm a dork I suppose. Eh, that was a few years ago but it was cool.

Aw man... :(

I wish I could show it, but that's in my old video pile under the TV somewhere, and I haven't got a TV input for my comp. Dammit >_<

Ah poop!

How bored does someone have to be to find out how to do that?

I had a record breaking Metal Gear Solid speed run at one time. I beat the European extreme (I think) and got big boss rank in less than 3 hours. I got tape of it somewhere laying around. One of my finer achievements. Its not so fun to just run through a game not really enjoying it.

I also have a fun story about the Wii:

My girlfriend rented Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. She was having trouble getting past the first screen of the game. Me, having never played the wii version but having spent countless hours playing the gamecube version knew the game like the back of my hand. Within an hour I was at the first fight with the Gigante, and kicked his ass. I was not a fan of the wii controls. The knife control was a little better, but other than that I was not a fan. I died once when the rolling ball was chasing you. Its all about playing keep away and aiming for the throat, not the head like you'd think. The kick can move a group of people to the floor so you can keep running. Try to conserve shotgun ammo. The free Punisher you get from shooting all the blue medallions is useful, but not necessary.

Also shoot at things until they die.

I've been playing through Resident Evil 4 again now that I got the Wii version. I really like the Wii controls. It feels like a light gun game with full control now, and the target practice game is a lot more fun.

Anyway, RE4 is one of those games that's not only great for a speed run but all sorts of variations in gameplay. You can try playing through with different weapons, you can try getting through with only the handgun.... You can even do a "fewest shots possible" playthrough. RE4 has quite a bit of replay value.

Half-Life in half-an-hour
I'm baffled how he quickly executes his moves... I really liked how he used grenades to launch himself into the air, despite massive damage.
"I like shooting, but I sure as hell don't like being shot at."

I tried to beat it with just the knife. I used the handcannon to dust all the bosses, and everyone else just got a quick kick/knife.

I love doing speed runs of Crash Twinsanity. They only take like, a half hour.

That was an awesome speed run on Mario, but I'll never understand it.

The best I had seen so far was a video of a guy beating Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind in 7:30.

Srsly.
