Is it only for the Wii? Somehow, I had gotten it in my head that it was for PSP...

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm a hardcore Silent Hill fan and understand every game has a different design philosophy upon which are good and bad parts. 'Re-imagining' is not a term I particularly like, thanks to the sheer incompetence of Hollywood, but even a bad Silent Hill (Origins, imo) isn't terrible. I think some fans are kinda picky and even too caught up on certain parts of the series, but from that interview, I'm seeing some very promising ideas. Let's hope for the best.
My only concern at this point is the player may have too little ability to do anything about the monsters. I can understand not attacking them as has been traditional, but I'd like to at least be able to shove one in case of being cornered or something. Not being able to walk through something while it waits to attack you and at the same time, you can't run, is not fun.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

I've never played Silent Hill before, but I love scaring myself via movies, so maybe the gaming route would be fun too. I've been paying attention to this new Silent Hill as it approaches release, and some favorable reviews will convince me to buy it.

Aren't you able to shove through the monsters if they corner you? I kinda got the impression you might be able to, especially since you can use your environment to your advantage. Hmm... Not sure.
Hawk, I think this sounds like it will be a great Silent Hill to start with as they are promising the fans a great new game, but they want it to draw newcomers, too. So if it's like a reworked version of the first one, then it seems like it will be great for everyone! :)

Games dont scare me easily, but Silent Hill is pretty damn creepy. If you're looking for a game that will scare you, Silent Hill is your best bet. If it doesnt get under your skin and make your hair stand up, then there isnt a game that's gonna do it for you. Give it a try, might be your thing.

I just looked it up actually. It's being simultaneously released on the Wii, PS2, and PSP.

To be honest, I never found Silent Hill to be as scary as most people claim. It's put me on edge and freaked me out, yes, but it's not the ultimate terror people say it is. The first Silent Hill, I think, was by far the scariest, even if SH2 is often (rightfully) touted as the best in the series.

Oh, my bad, haha. I didn't know about the PSP one. And I thought they weren't making PS2 games anymore. Dang. XD

Yep. Hell, Persona 4 came out less than a year ago on the PS2.
Also, back on topic: That psych profile system sounds awesome. Here's hoping it can be successfully pulled off.

I have to agree. I dont know if I was really scared while playing it, but as it said I was pretty damn creeped out. It's one of those games that knows all the right strings to pull, using sound and environment to it's advantage. I'd still say as far as "terror" goes it's probably the "scariest" game out there. At least that I know of.

The first couple chapters of Dead Space were pretty terrifying, til you figured out the routine and start stocking up some ammo. The environment was very claustrophobic, you had no portable light aside from a small circle at the end of your targeting laser, and the ship was actually really NOISY which masked a lot of potential monster noises. not to mention how you couldn't hear anything in the space sections so they could be following you and you wouldn't even know it. Eventually though the scare moments got predictable, and once you got a good enough arsenal the bad guys weren't threatening any more.
Silent Hill is better at maintaining the scary environment over the course of the game. They use most of the tricks in the book but they use them in less predictable ways, and mix in a lot of bread-and-butter stuff with some real scares (and even buildup to nothing, sometimes) so that keeps it unpredictable. I wasn't impressed with the most recent one though- I think I've gotten so used to silent hill's WTF storylines that it was predictable, and I didn't like the new fighting system. I didn't play it past the police station or something. I'll be interested in the new one, but it might be a case of renting it before I buy.

I didn't play it past the fight with Scarlet, mostly because my copy glitched up and the game stopped recognizing my controller input whenever I got halfway through. :(

Oh God how did I forget about Dead Space. That was pretty unsettling too.
I shouldnt giggle at stomping babies to death, but that was one of the greatest things I've ever done in a video game. Dead Space will make you feel good about murdering mutated infants.

I liked when you got to drop kick them, sometimes I let them jump on me just so I could do that. :] Stomping random corpses into a mess of strewn-around limbs and gore didn't get old either.

When the bloody "CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS" appeared on the wall near the start I knew the game was going to own. It does a great job of building tension too, such as any time you fight that immortal thing. Man now I wanna play Dead Space again.

I love horror games and this seems like just the sort of thing I'd be into, particularly the lack of weapons and healing items. Personally I think horror games are improved by the lack of decent weapons, like how in Silent Hill 2 the first weapon you get is a piece of a broken barrier. It seems to underscore just how unprepared the main character is for a fight. Having no weapons at all might be an improvement on the same idea if that makes any sense. The main game in the series that I'm familiar with is the second game which did a great job of using environment insofar as being creepy as hell. I'm really interested in the psychological horror angle as well, it seems like a good direction for the franchise to go.

I like the idea of the ice in the game, I can't think of many games that use ice in a frightening way, but I'm worried that it's straying too far from the original view of the other world and it'll end up as "silent hill monsters on ice".
I don't like watching the world change much. Too much like the movie pimping.
Not being able to fight back should make it more nerve racking which would be great. I'm just hoping I can actually play it on the wii (I'm rubbish with the controls).
Would still prefer Fatal frame to be coming out though.
