I'll probably end up playing both, and either loving or hating hem depending on how well I'm doing at the time. In the end though, Silent Hill is probably the one I'll pay for, and I'll borrow RE off a friend or something.

I just like the Silent Hill series better. It's actually scary, so that's an advantage.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

Yes, Silent Hill for me. I liked RE2 but that was the only one. I'm just not big on tactical running around shooting things. I like the SH games because you have to be careful about who you fight, you never have a very strong weapon or enough ammo (unless you are playing on Easy) and it's more about how to avoid enemies completely than about the best way to kill all of them. I also like SH's aesthetics and stories more, although they can get pretty melodramatic at times.

Although SH Origins (or whatever the recent PSP one is) wasn't scary at all.

With the advent of Resident Evil 4, I think I can say comfortably that RE is a better game, whereas Silent Hill is a better horror experience. I've been surprised by a sudden attack in RE or creeped out, but Silent Hill has actually honestly scared me.

Still, I'm the type who doesn't particularly like being scared, so I'll probably stick with RE.

The tank controls and fix camera angles kept me from enjoying Resident Evil 1-3, and I've never played a Silent Hill game. But I did love Resident Evil 4, so I fully plan on getting RE5.

I view the games as being very different. Yes, they're 'survival horror' but it kind of ends there. Resident Evil is more like an action film. It features jarring moments of fast moving danger coming out of nowhere and lots of gore. It can be scary. Silent Hill is more story oriented. The enemies are often surrealist and the player is not powerful. It can be disturbing. That said, their expressions of terror are typically different as a whole other than the fundamentals of said player fighting something creepy.

lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Chris Redfields ansem

Chris Redfield is Ansem?!?!?!?!?!?! Does this mean that the next Kingdom Hearts game will have a Resident Evil tie-in? And will RE5 feature a boss fight with a giant, zombified Mickey Mouse?

Seriously, though. Is there a reason people can't play both?

Nah, not really. But it's fun to discuss the merits of either series.

Come to think of it, I can't play either of them. Because I'm still a generation behind everyone else, console-wise.

In terms of Survival horror I have to go silent hill, Silent Hill 4 was impressive but in terms of gameplay Resident Evil is a winner. Depends what you like.

I personally like the music and sureal story in Silent Hill (although it got a bit repeative) it will be interesting to see what the game is like after the amercians have taken it although Orgins was a fantastic sucess I wonder if they have the skills to bring it to the next Gen.

Resident Evil however. Damn how can you beat Chris Redfield. It's fucking Chris Redfield against a whole country of zombies. I'll be looking forward to the action scences and side kicks to zombies heads.

I'm typically a solid Resident Evil fan but I dunno, I'm kinda on the fence here
(even though the graphics for RE5 look pretty awesome).

Me being black and all and killing black zombies would just feel kinda weird-- but I'm going to remain fairly neutral if I ever do get a chance to play it.

Just my thoughts people.

...
Uh... why? I never had a problem killing white zombies.

Oh, well. It won't feel nearly as it will for a white guy killing black zombies. I think Capcom is trying to send us on a guilt trip. 0_o

Alright, so maybe you got me there Lizard_B1te.
I guess this is something that more black people (or just people in general) need to get over. I could be horribly wrong but I still don't think Capcom's trying to be racist.

I'll play RE5 if you can move while you shoot. The short time I played RE4 I couldn't do that, and it instantly killed the game for me.

that was the setback of the game in my opinion but other than that I think it was still fairly solid.

When you make racist remarks, the "just kidding" part should probably be in a larger font size.

Hands-on impressions from the Tokyo Game Show seem to indicate that you still have to stop in order to shoot. However, they've added strafing, which is nice. And there's apparently a different control setup you can choose that makes it control more like a FPS/Shooter game.

Resi Evil 5 looks better, in some ways though it is almost a movie
The 'over the shoulder' camera is easier to control than Silent Hills awkward camera
