I don't think I'm wrong in sayin' in the past few years one's only REAL option for "quality" programming is "cable" networks.
Although, the level of programming from basic (Sci-fi, Spike, Oxygen...) is getting better by the day, nothing yet can really top HBO and Showtime as far as "great" television. They just don't have as many guidelines and MUCH better budgets.
(Incidently, we just wait for DVD's and rent 'em, or watch when we visit relatives....)
But, I thought with the huge ad endorsing polygamy, I'd ask how many of ya'll out there have watched, "Big Love?" I have to admit, I watched the first season, it was perversly addicted. I just love Bill Paxton (Game over, game over!) and Jeanne Tripplehorn is kinda' hot to me. I also like the chicks playin' the other two wives...So, whatta' ya' think? Feel free to discuss polygamy in general, this show in specific or other HBO greats.
Deadwood, Carnivàle, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Oz...
Or do you prefer "Showtime?"
Dead Like Me, The L Word, Queer as Folk, Soul Food, Weeds...
(For now, let's stick to just these two channels, mmmmkay?)

I'd say HBO, especially since they're making a Preacher series. They also allow a lot of creator freedom.

Dead Like Me and Carnivale are over though. :( I do love me some Deadwood and Rome though (and the aforementioned cancelled shows). Plus their one-offs like Band of Brothers. I've not had cable for about 10 years though so I always have to wait for their incredibly expensive DVDs. (I kind of avoid learning too much about HBO shows unless I have lots of spare money sitting around... because then I'll want to buy them.)

Dexter and The Tudors are two of my recent addictions. I really like Weeds too. I've seen one episode of Big Love and now want to watch it from the beginning.

No mention of "Masters of Horror" and its epic win yet? I agree, for the past four or five years, I've been hooked on the sopranos. Sex & The City was an awesome show about four women who talk like gay men. Oz was all about gay men and racial topics, so of course I loved it. Lucky Louie was one of the most hilarious things I've seen in some time. Rome, Deadwood, Carnival, Dexter, and others are all great.
I have to mention though, my new favorite show now that the sopranos is gone, has to be Nip/Tuck, its just so awesome. Doctor Doom is a plastic surgeon who has sex with a woman every episode, and has a black son. Also his plastic surgeon partner gets into drama. I think the last season can't be topped. That was a pretty good ending that wrapped a lot of things up. This season couldn't top the constantly violent surgeries, the sheer amount of women Doctor Christian Troy gets, white supremists, time travel, transvestites, fetishists, the gigantic fat woman stuck to a couch, or any of the countless other awesome moements of the show. I actually got pretty down from the episode where the other doctors mistress kills herself. Very nice.
Also canceled. The pilot for a show based on Preacher has been greenlit according to a wizard I picked up a few months ago. It should prove to be the best HBO show yet.

This has been in talks for years...I have mixed feelings. Preacher is my favorite comic book and I am soooo skeptical.
For several years "View Askew" was workin' on one, that fell through.
But, the Mark Steven Johnson and Howard Deutch, HBO series seems to finally be coming into the works. Johnson swears it will follow the comic and since it's on HBO sex and violence are a go...You know how it is when you REALLY like something...Nothing's better than what's in your head. But, I'm really hopin' it blows me away.
