Should I bother coming back?

I used to have a comic here on DD way back, maybe about a few years ago. Now I'm just wondering whether I should bother coming back. I've thought up some ideas for comics, but drawing a webcomic has lost some of it's appeal to me, and I just can't imagine getting motivated enough to start back up after so long. So here's the crux of this question: is there really anything worth coming back to?

I mean, I used to have some fans and friends on this site, and it was fun, but my faith in online comics has taken serious damage. I've seen so many great comics go completely ignored while a rampaging horde of bad jokes and poor writing take center stage due to some pretty pictures and loud fans. if anyone has anything to say about all this please let me know.

More questions:
Are we here to find out our comics' worth?
Or, are we here to find out our own worth?

BTW, you're back. I'm back. Um, welcome back! :)

Enjoy life!

I stopped webcomicing awhile ago(spritefail), but I'm still a regular on the forums. I think that "Community" is a stronger word than "Webcomics" in the front page. You could try out the side of the website that isn't about comics.
I am so happy to finally be back home

It's simple really... if you like making comics make comics... if you don't like making comics don't make comics.

If you're only interested in a popularity contest stick with facebook... at least the your mafia wars application will fill the void for 6 hours a day!

I've seen so many great comics go completely ignored

That's more their fault then anyone elses, people will read good webcomics if they find them, if they don't know about them/where they even are then the author is the only one to be blamed for never advertising. Heck some people don't even want to advertise because they think they're not 'worthy' of fans or worse, have some idiot idea that only 'real' fans try to find their comic themselves.

So should you start up a comic when you have no motivation and a dimming interest? No. Even the people here who claim their comics for winning popularity contests winning still love creating the thing to death. Spend time doing something else that makes you happy (or possibly even a job for some moolah$$$)

Radec dont be a stupid cow.

You had plenty of fans, and a comic that didnt reek of gimmicky bullshit that just happened to have pretty art to back it up. You had a comic that didnt need advertising, that made its self popular purely off word of mouth because it was just THAT GOOD. THAT is a sign of true talent, something not a lot of people have. Charisma and appeal that hooks people right away, and leaves them coming back for more.

In short you and your comic had personality. Motivation is your own battle, but I think you've got enough guts to overcome it. I've known you for a long time, and the first thing I would do is go back to reading your work if you presented something new. Your friends, and fans, are still around and they would love nothing more than to see you work on something new.

PS vote lefarce

I agree with Ryan. Webcomics should be a labor of love, and merely making a comic for fans and internet fame is no different than working for the green. If you feel like making a comic, go ahead, but don't force yourself, hon.
There's a fly in my rice.

I believe it was Alan Moore that said something along the lines of "If you're in it for fame and money, you'll get neither".

comics are hard work if anything an obsession, if you can't not make comics then make comics. If not then you probably had nothing to do here in the first place in my oppinion.

My heart has also been broken due to lack of updates of my favorites (oh hae remember DD Civil War?) but I'm one to speak.

I'm actually mounting a comeback myself, though I'm doing it all for fame and money.

God damn it... I'm trying to INK here!!! i don't know why i said that but I'm having a fucking GOOD time playing around with black ink and listening to some really cool punk rock music... now I'm going to make a coffee because I feel like it. Is there anything BETTER than just doing something because you love it that damn much!

I wouldn't call the forum community here all that strong, especially compared to others that I've been to. Otherwise... webcomic creation is a most unrewarding pursuit...

I came back to DD this year after a while away. So, my personal experience: yeah, its worth coming back. But only because I couldn't get comics out of my head.

There are more than a few stories of truly fantastic books, comics and movies that never had even half the limelight of some truly shoddy productions. Why expect things to be much different online?

Quoth Gray Seraphim and Ryan... do it for love, because chances aren't good for any of us to get either fame or money.

Updates Thursdays.

My mother always used to say "I wish I'd gotten rid of you and swapped you for that Japanese girl next door! She'd be happy to support me in my old age."

I've pretty much shaped my life on that.

I'd say this community is pretty strong.

Even after I quit doing my comic, I kept coming back here for the community itself.

As for the topic itself, It all depends on your love for making it.

I, personally, have went through 7 different re-makes of my comic, and now I'm going stronger than ever. Every time I re-make it, I seem to think about the universe more.
Why do I keep doing it? Because I have a love for making comics. I'm extremely devoted to my work, and wouldn't give it up for the world.

The question is, do you love making comics?

follow your gutfeel.

ask yourself though what is your true objective in doing a webcomic.

Good luck.

For personal (real life) reasons I quit creating Magiversity over a year ago. I've started again (it's a slow start) recently, but I found that people were still reading it. O_O

If you really want to do a comic, go for it. If you're unsure then don't. You don't want to start only to stop after just one or a few comics because you figured out that's just what you didn't want.

Promotion, personality and perserverance trump quality every time. Face it people like crap and become rabid fans of crap. Twilight? Harlequin Romance novels? Eragon?

Do what you love the best you can and allow yourself to be happy. Remember that so many don't allow themselves to be happy. Give yourself permission to be happy.

Wow, I didn't exactly expect such a waterfall of replies. I still have some thinking to do, but I appreciate the kind words from my friends, and advice from those I have yet to meet (damn LeFarce, I thought you woulda vanished up your own arse by now. you don't know how relieving it is to see you're still active).
As I did say, I do have some thinking to do, but thank you all for at least giving my car a jolt to get it started.
And the suggestion of getting involved with the actual community for a while could be just what I need in a situation like this. I remember loving making comics both me and my friends could enjoy, and I suppose somewhere along the line I lost sight of what was important.
I'll let you know when I reach my final decision.

Well this argument could apply to everything: whatever field you're in, the lowest common denominator is always going to win out against what you or I might consider quality. If people want crud, why shouldn't they have it and why should we begrudge the crudmakers their rewards? Jealousy? - you could always hop on board that gravy train, if you wanted.

People are entitled to buy into whatever they want: we learn to live with that or...

What's it all about when you sort it out, Ozone?

Eh, it's sort of true.
While "crud" has its standard role to play, there'll always be real quality work at the top as well, in whatever field.

-Say UK comedy- you get that Bo Selector shit but also Stephen Fry...
-Popular music gives us mass produced crap from Brittany Spears, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Robbie Williams, the last 10 years of Michael Jackson... But we all know there's a lot of good stuff out there as well. ^___^

...and if I continue I'll vanish up my own lovely bum into an endless void of subjectivity

Hmmm... Based on this comment, my comic should be a lot more popular than it is. :)

I guess I should probably try making the zombies SPARLKY like those SPARKLY vampires that everyone loves these days.

That oughta do it.

It's a Grizzly Bear battling Zombies. Do you need to know more?

Also, Radec, I never read your stuff but you should definitely keep doing it if it's something you want to do. Don't force yourself to do something if it's not something you like.
Those were my two cents.

Here's another way to look at it, if you feel you need to be cajoled, coaxed and cuddled back into it... do us all a favour and forget about it...

The only reason to create something is because you can't NOT do it.
