I remember hearing a lot of people saying this game looked impressive after the Tokyo Game Show, but I never eally got around to checking it out until today. At first I thought it was just going to be another cel shaded RPG, but it now that I've checked out some gameplay footage, I'm getting a bit of a different impression. It reminds me a lot of the recent Sakura Taisen games with the free range of motion and the time bar dictating how much you cn move and attack per turn, but the system's been tweeked for a deeper more tactical approach. Stages are larger, you actually have to aim your shots, characters seem to have more unique features, there is a cover system, and I really like this idea of being able to take pot shots at enemies during their movement phase (they can do the same during yours).

I don't think the trailer or playable demos really got into the out of combat aspects of the game, so who knows if it will have the sme adventure game aspects the Sakura Taisen games did. All I can tell from the demo is that there are at last two male characters and four female, the main character is likely the average looking guy with the brown hair and the story involves some sort of romantic element. I wasn't thrilled to the the sketchy effect from FFT make a return here (even though this is a Sega game), but at least the underlying models and animation are solid, so it feels more like a stylistic choice than a gimmick. I've also always been a big fan of the sort of comic sound effect overlays you sometimes see in games that try to mimich 2D effects in 3D, so I love it every time the sound effects pop up on screen when firing guns or driving tanks.

I've never herd of it. Will it keep that name for it's American release if one is planned?

Probably not. A lot of people are referring ot it as Valkyrie Of The Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles, so they may simply translate the title for the US release, if ther is one. The gaming sites seem to be hyping it up a bit, though, so it may have a better chance of coming out here than Sakura Taisen did. Sega can be pretty screwy at times when it comes to which franchises to bring over, though.

I've actually heard of this game before. It looks pretty awesome, and I will most likely get it if it comes to America.

And if it doesn't, I will kill whatever fucker had the idea to not send it over.

Depends on what you're looking for. It mixed the Japanese adventure genre (i.e. dating sim) with tactical combat sequences. What made it great for me was that each game played out like a short 12 episode anime season. Each of the 12 chapters would be split into segments of dialog-heavy story sequences split up by tactical battles inbetween. During the story segments, you would make choices at key points in an effort to win over the other characters on your team. During the tactical sequences, your team members would have modified stats based on how well they liked you.

The games were fairly high budget titles in Japan, but catered more to the anime crowd and were very Japanese, so they never hit the states (despite demand from fans over here). Although the anime influence still remains, it looks like this game may be shedding the Japanese setting. It could also be dropping the dating sim elements in the interest of gaining a wider international audience (this is a PS3 game, they need to hit as big an audience as they possibly can), although without seeing what happens outside of combat, there is no way to say for sure.

I'm hoping they do keep those elements, though, since that is what made Sakura Taisen so endearing. You could easily get attached to the characters and the storyline was engaging. The tactical element was a nice holdover from Ginga Ojousama Yuna, but it was really secondary to the story. With the third game, they shed the grid-based tactical format for something similar to what we're seeing here, only less technical and with steam/magic powered mechs.

There are full translations of the scripts for the first three or four games on Gamefaqs. The first two were originally for the Saturn, while three and four hit the Dreamcast and then Sega made a remake of the first game and a fifth game for the PS2, but those were never fully translated. If you want to check them out, though, it gives a good impression of what the story sequences were like and may include some faqs on the tactical portions, too.

Basically looks like Jagged Alliance disguised as a third-person shooter. Pretty cool.
