Why do so many peple use these type of comments?
I constantly see them in comic descriptions, requests for reviews, even in the author notes!!
"Come read my stupid comic and see the crappy art I have created"
"I think my comic sucks, what do you think?"
WHY are you posting a comic if you think it's that bad?? Is this an attempt to get sympathy? Do these people need someone to come up to them and say, "No, it's not THAT bad! Your really doing OK!"
I know that, in the past, I have posted pages and commented that I was not AS happy as I could be with something, but what's the point of insulting your own work?
I'm venting, but seriously, why do it?

The only comic I really openly regarded as crap was my sprite comic, because, lets face it, its a sprite comic.
I resent that, mother fucker.

I hate it when artists make these kind of comments. Saying "my art sucks but here it is" is a cheap way to invite sympathy so that people will judge you less harshly. I see this both on the internet and in my real life art classes. People really need to own up to what they've created, be it good or bad.
An artist's opinions about their work really shouldn't factor into a critique anyways. It's proper conduct in a critique to simply present your work and then take all the criticism you get. It's up to you whether or not you use any of the advice your critics give you.
So basically, grow a spine, people. Don't put up a sheild of "my art sucks" or you won't get any real criticism.

GoblynIt's anoying, but maybe a bit less anoying that saying your work is the greatest stuff in the history of the world.... What if artists were more like rap stars? :-D
Why do so many peple use these type of comments?
(some are...)
Then I suppose we'd all paint images of our own idealised genitalia with captions beneath it reading: "I am the greatest!"
t's proper conduct in a critique to simply present your work and then take all the criticism you get.In critique maybe, but what about the rest of the situations where you present work?
Besides, in most art critiques the art isn't expected to speak for itself. The artist must justify their work with some kind of statement or rationale.
Talking down thier own work is the privilage of the artist, you as the viewer need to get over it and ignore such comments.

Well, I usually add in my Authors Note box a note about what I'm not happy about on a page. It's not that I'm looking for sympathy, it's just that after drawing the page and looking back on it I see errors with it.

I try to critique my own work in my commentary. I'd say the head seems too big, or the expression wasn't what I planned than say something vague like it sucks. I also try my best in my comments to say what I like about it along side what I did not like.
People should talk about the goods as well as the bads of their work more.
I just feel like if I talk about only the good things I may come across as cocky.

Yeah, I've probably used similar lines before, but now I've sort of come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what the artwork is like. I like my artwork, and the type of comic that I'm running works for that artwork as far as I can tell. Though, my comic was terrible way back when it wasn't based on terrible super heroes...lol. But, that's how we improve, through time right? right?
Actually, recently I reviewed someone's comic on smackjeeves who was wondering why he was getting really low reviews. I think a lot of problems come from people who don't put any effort into their comics and it shows. Ridiculous spelling mistakes, grammar, and even just terrible art (not necessarily of the characters, but of how they put the comic together, the dialogue boxes, etc etc etc.).
So, just put effort into it, and if people don't like it, ask why. Honest criticism is so rare anyway these days...

I'm posting my old comics from years back, and my notes talk about how crappy they are, mostly because I find them horribly funny, and that I am showing how much I've improved since then.
Case in point then: http://www.drunkduck.com/Warped_Classic
Now: http://www.drunkduck.com/Warped
I think part of the fun of posting the old ones is making fun of them for being worse than how I draw now.
Even I'll admit I was pretty good from when I started Warped though. <___<

What I hate is when I see some one like Inkmonkey leaving constructive criticism to every one on how to improve their comic, then churning out an Elijah & Azuu page saying 'Dear God *Insert character* looks retarded'.
Or when some one like Amelius or Jillyfoo or (I have got to learn more artist's names by heart) come out with a brilliant page and then bitch on about a minor detail hardly any one noticed until they brought it up
Now I'm not saying I don't do these things. I show some one my art and I'm immediately embarrassed that I draw like that, even when it's half-descent but I am trying to make myself look at all my positives (Even using a crappy sketch of Azuu to be turned into a ... punchline for 'Enter the Duck')
People, we need to stop being pessimistic about ourselves. I draw comics while singing 'Always look on the bright side of life' or I put on some music I like that doesn't make me feel depressed (I seriously believe I am becoming goth, as my wardrobe and attitudes become darker)
If you hate the comic, don't complain and see how many people criticise you. If it's barely any, then you have nothing to worry about. You get a lot, you can always try again next page
Until next time

I tihnk Mr Niel has got it. I think there is something to being humble about your own work, without crossing the line and beating it down.
If it is so bad that the only thing that you can refer to it as is @#$%, then you should not be posting it!
And, really, don't excuses often fall into this boat? Saying "This is terrible, but I drew it in under a minute!" basically translates into "Here is something that I could not be bothered to put time into but I did it anyway and am now expecting you to look at it and tell me that it is terrible but understandable due to the little time that you put into it!"
I understand commenting on your own work and saying "This could have been better" or "I need to work on this" but I don't understand outright stating that what you are posting is terrible. If you are looking for help, state that you are unhappy with what you did and ask for help! If you are looking for a pat on the back and an "attaboy" then... go... somewhere else... (yeah, I really didn't know how to finish that, I just know that anyone who is looking to be picked up and made to feel better through a webcomic is going to be seriously let down).

How true.
A artist should never be 100% happy about their work. If that would happen they stop trying to get better.
I constantly see things in my art that i could have done better, and i try to do so with the next art piece i do.
But by going around saying my "art sucks" is just silly.

A artist should never be 100% happy about their work. If that would happen they stop trying to get better.
There needs to be a happy medium between having some self confidence and having some humility. While having too much confidence in your work can cause you to never improve, having too little can cause people to stop trying. I've personally seen both ends of the spectrum. One artist I know is so convinced of her talent that she hasn't improved in five years and she wasn't very good to begin with. Another draws like a pro, but has no self confidence, whatsoever. Despite his talent, nothing you say will ever encourage him to actually draw comics.
Cutting yourself down is usually something that only works in limited capacity, anyway. Some people may feel sorry for you, but a lot of people will just take you at your word. In the professional world, talking ill of your work is a big mistake. Employers won't even consider artists who aren't confident in their skills.

I would have to say that I, myself am guilty of self-degrading comments. Though I do try to keep them at a minimum and have generally gotten better about it in my old age, there is always at least one area where I fall short and continually beat myself up about. i.e. "I did OK drawing this dog, but the overall comic is inarticulate and impossible to understand." It's not that I think I'm totally awful it's just that I don't measure up to the standard that I think makes a great comic. And there are times that I'd rather people read "Rocketship A Go Go" or "The Poet King." In the end I'm not looking for sympathy, I just have a lot of mixed feelings about what I do.
And for the record I think my comic gets very good comments despite the way I act.

I guess it depends on the artist and their confidence level (thank you, Captain Obvious!).
Now see, I'm normally quite confident but I'd like to think I don't cross into the egotistical realm -- but I can make an occasional semi-self deprecating comment (although this is probably my first in DD). I think a properly placed self-deprecating comment to express dry wit can be amusing and purposeful. On the other hand, a self-deprecating comment to generate pity or express angst for the point of angst is just a wasted comment, in my opinion.

It's a huge turnoff for me when I'm reading a comic, and under every single page is the artist bemoaning how terrible their art is and how they shouldn't even be doing a comic because they're so awful at drawing/writing/breathing/eating cake. I don't mind every once in a while if an artist says "oh, this page didn't turn out like I wanted", or "I think I could improve this about this page", but when it's a constant pity-fest with no visible attempt to actually improve the things that they're complaining about, it's really just obnoxious to me. If you have absolutely no confidence in yourself or your art, maybe you should look into a new hobby.

Like most people said... The ones who complains about how terrible their works are usually the ones who wants attention or sympathy. However, there is a better way of doing it and its also something I'd like to see people do more often. Intead of bitching about your work, why not say it nicely that something bothers you and ask for the reader opinion or tips to improve on something that's bothering you? Then again, it could really just be my preference. My art is never finished unless I get few people's opinions and pointers. I never say my work is complete unless I grab some poor souls and grill em on their opinions until they say "God, Memmy. QUIT IT!".
Unfortunatly, sometime its difficult to get opinions out of people when all they say is "Oh it looks good, I dont see anything. Its perfect!" like a broken record. Because they're afraid they might insult the artist. lol!
