I'm still waiting for them to make an RPG Maker for the PSP or DS. RPG Maker on the go would rule.

In my opinion, XP was a step forward in graphics but a huge step back in simplicity.
In RPG Maker 2000/3 everything was easily planned. It was automatically a timed battle system but it could easily be changed. Boats and other forms of transport can be used easily. Sure, the graphics weren't as amazing, but it was simple, fun, and easy.

XP has one major downside of costing money (I suppose they need to make money SOMEHOW >.>). Albeit I bought it anyway. Other than the graphics, a lot of things are harder to do. Such as planning a timed battle system. You have to use scripting, which not everybody knows, to get it working. Transport is harder to create. If they kept the simplicity with the graphics, this would be top notch! But they screwed around and made something harder to use but looks flashy.

RPG Maker 2003 until I die...

true, it is difficult to work with. i had to spend 4 hours just figuring out how to change the battle tune, then another hour getting the hang of maps.

i don't like the new battle system in XP. i might sound kinda strange, but i *gasp* like ATB battles. i know that you can upload your own programs to make it an ATB battle system in XP, but how the hell do you do that?

i don't know how to make cutscenes either.

yes, i would really like an RPG Maker on DS. it would be perfect, since you can drag and drop, you could make your own story art, and if it had ATB with the simplicity of RPG Maker 2003 and the graphics of XP, that alone would make me buy a DS. it would be good if you could draw your own spell effects, your own cutscenes, you could even record your own dialogue!! you could also have something like the overdrives in FFX where you have to draw certain shapes on the screen in order to cast the spell.

...we need to persuade enterbrain to make a DS version.

Had the PC RM series, made two games on 2k and some partial games on 2k3, and got bored with the whole thing. Never was a fan of the XP version though.
That's "Dr. BlkKnight" to all of you.

I've always been interested in the series, but could never find much info on any one game. Which one would you recommend for a newbie to the series?

I used to have them, all three of them. 2000 was OK, but it didn't have the battle system like the RPG that I wanted to make. 2k3 had it right on the head, but because of resources it is easiest to make games, but it's harder to make any game that's different, as you have to make the sprite a certain size and name it a certain way when importing.

XP is a giant leap. It's different and the script system made it amazingly easy to custom (never learned the language myself though). Unfortunatly I realised that all of those that I tried were actually illegal (I never knew until I read the forums for ages) and it actually costs $40! I might as well get a full 3D game maker. But I uninstalled them. 2K3 never actually legally came out in the UK, and 2000 was translated by someone. If only it was freewere. Then I would love it to bits.
FIGHTSPLOSION 5!!! IT HAS 2 ALIENS, A PIRATE, A HORNY NINJA AND A HOMOCIDAL FIRE PRODUCING PENGUIN! AND A BIRD WOMAN AND A CAT WOMAN!

Also a mute that reminds me of Johnny Bravo and Samuel L Jackson at the same time!

While I've got all three RPG Makers, I primarily use RPG Maker 2000. Mainly because I started making the rpg version of Project Mango on 2000 and couldnt be bothered changing after I got the other versions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the RPG makers freeware?

I've seen sights that suggest this and others that don't. I'm very interested in the 2003 program, but I don't have much in terms of paper monies.

None of the rpg makers are freeware. You can find a download for 2000 and 2003 after a simple 5 minute google search, but it's illegal in every form... although that hasn't stopped thousands of people from downloading and making some great games. RPG Maker XP is available commercially for 60 bux and you can get a 30 day trial from Download.com

I use rpgm2003 and I have a little game on it. It's kind of like a homage to Earthbound but I haven't worked on the thing in a while... I think I'll pick it up again.

2000 and 2003 are technically illegal translated versions. XP can be purchased though.

Well I've found plenty of free copies. I was asking since almost all of them contain nasty things like Trojans and key loggers. :/

Legality isn't a concern of mine.
