After hearing Greenday's American Idiot a couple of years ago, I've had an interest of rock operas. So, I'm trying to broaden my horizons a little and poke around at what there is.

So far, my favorite is MCR's Black Parade. Anyone wanna share their favorite? I'm always eager to listen to new rock music.

Um, Pink Floyd's the Wall, anyone? Possibly the greatest of all time, and I hear they're making a stage adapatation for it. If by some chanceyou haven't heard it before, I recommend the live album (Is There Anybody Out There?) which had superior performances and didn't cut guitar solos and songs.

Rent...never thought of it as a musical...but more of a rock opera.

I liked The Who's Quadrophenia. It's touted as a rock opera but the characters don't really sing in it. Somehow that seems crazy because on of the characters was portrayed by a very young Sting, the scooters were cool anyway. Rent's considered a rock opera too I guess... I never saw the play but I hated the movie, Maureen was just so damn annoying!

RENT the movie sucked big time.

I got to see it live when it came to town. When I was in college I had a group of freinds who loved the musical, knew all the lyrics and sung it constantly...and it grew on me.

Probably the Mars Volta's Deloused or The Who's Tommy.

I saw it on Broadway (with Frenchie Davis unfortunately) and I didn't think the play was really any better. The songs were switched around a bit, but ultimately, I found it kind of lame. I definitely wouldn't consider it to be a rock opera, either. A lot of the music is more pop-ish or more typical of musicals, plus it's a mixture of music and dialog.

Well, I'm not a big listener of Rock Opera but more into Metal Opera!

There so many Metal bands blend with Opera and orchestra! Nightwish, for instance, is a Power Metal band with a female vocalist that sings operatic... which works pretty well!

There are tons of bands going into this direction giving amazing epicness to the songs! Therion is an amazing Orchestral/Operatic Extreme Metal which I humbly, recommand!

So, Opera or/and Metal/Rock opera is very enjoyable... both concentrate on the musical aspects to the songs, and it works!

You are allowed to have your opinion, just like everyone else. I have to disagree though. Opera normally is the singing of dialogue...as far as I understand. With RENT most if not all the dialogue is sung. The music is more rock oriented and wouldn't necessarily be categorized as pop, but a lot of pop music is rock. I saw this with the original cast and it was amazing! It sounds like what you saw was two steps away from the movie production.

Absolutely the Who's Tommy. A must for everyone.

Depending on when and where you saw it it is more than likely you didn't see the original cast. but your comment tells me you didn't see the original musical if you said the movie was the similar to the musical you saw. The Movie was nothing like the musical on broadway. But regardless you hated RENT or the faxsimile you saw. No need to debate it. Debates need to be kept in that forum. This is media discussion. Actually, rock operas, as well. That's why they have the classification of "rock musical."

I saw it on Broadway (as I stated before) and many of the major players were from the original cast. Despite what you may think, what I saw was, in fact, the original musical. The movie and the play are not so different that they share no similarities. For the most part, it's the same music (although the order is changed) and they even borrowed a lot of the original cast. The story is the same with a larger budget and some different directorial decisions. They're hardly night and day.
