I think you're getting cameramen (or women) confused with the actual reporters. Most news stations will buy footage of disasters, or whatnot from whatever sources they can find to be the first to get the scoop. This means that they'll buy that footage from regular people who just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time.

Unless of course we're talking about internet blogs. Those guys are practically nuts, and I could easily see them stopping in the middle of all that devastation to get some grotesque pictures of a corpse.

Yeah Gaze and also even in the mall shooting a few weeks ago there was someone trying to record the footage inside the mall with his/her cell phone. So people are that stupid. Man talk about another 180 on this thread

congrats him for common sense. When the danger is open and coming at you then they'll run but if it seems to be away. Cameras are out and recording.

Sorry, but in a life or death situation, people don't pull out their phones and start taking pictures. Like I said, take a look at actual disaster footage and you'll see when the shit hits the fan and bad stuff's happening all around, people don't stand around and gawk, they run. In the video EVERYBODY in the street stops to take pictures. Cars stop moving, people are meandering as if there was an accident, which is not at all a realistic reaction to buildings getting hit by flaming debris, downtown collapsing and blowing up, and the head of the Statue of Liberty landing in the middle of the street.

The situation is more comparable to a modern day war zone. When the missiles start dropping, you DON'T see civilians casually wandering the streets to take pictures of the chaos.

And yeah, war zones are totally comparable to this situation, since all of those people live in media-dominated societies with regular access to complex digital recording equipment...

that's why there's plenty amateur videos of firefights. Also the civies might not shoot but the soldiers are shooting both ways sorry Isokun but you're just wrong...dead wrong...some of the following are professional others are just paid for some are just youtube

The first video is primarily paid camera men. Civilian videos of 9/11 are all from a good distance away (don't forget, they weren't expecting the towers to collapse, so the expected danger zone wasn't very large). The only video from within the danger zone was the fifth video and that's a reporter (you can even see him drop his boom as he's running). The video of the fire is a group of college student evacuated from campus. Like the other footage, they are well outside the danger zone. Plus they aren't there out of curiosity, they're there because they have nowhere to go.

As I said before, the situation is different when you are in imminent danger. In the Colverfield video, debris was already falling on the buildings in the immediate vicinity (including the building the cameraman was in), causing damage to that area even before the head landed in the street. Then, even after the head lands in the street, EVERYBODY in the street is just standing around. Every man, woman, and child in the street actually STOPS RUNNING. In all of the 9/11 footage, as soon as the tower starts collapsing, people aren't standing around to watch it, they run. Even the civilians with cameras are running. In the Cloverfield video, people are standing around, watching the destruction, not even considering seriously running until the dust cloud is right on top of them.

Yes, you do get an occasional idiot who will stop and snap pictures, but the reaction you get in Colverfield isn't just one or two people doing it, but every last person in the street stopping to either watch or take pictures like it's the freaking Thanksgiving Day Parade.

also keep in mind 9/11 was really before camera phones became popular. So that's why most amature videos would be in the apartments. Still 2 airplanes just crashed into 2 towers and you're just going to keep looking and standing around.

but it's not completely realistic I know that, but not too far from the truth. Basically the film looks to be an exaggeration of citizen journalism.

I'll buy that more than I would the claim that it's a realistic depiction of how people react in that situation. It's very Hollywood and really kills any need for the handycam approach, making it an annoying gimmick more than something that adds to the film.

why does Eddie Murphy still do movies? Hasn't he made of bunch of crap before Dreamgirls. Secondly does the Spirit come out next year and when does Watchmen comes out and will it be any good? Also why aren't we talking about Indy 4? So many interesting movies are coming out next year. Me, I'm too nice to films and have a hard time hating a film.
