Ha, I was just about to make a thread about this.

The most hilarious thing about this is that it took this long for their funds to run out. Why did they even bother continuing after the first decade?
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

I'll bet that even now, we haven't seen the last of Duke Nukem. He's got too much of a name. Sure, right now Duke Nukem is a joke of the videogame industry, but I think it's only a matter of time before some developer feels that a Duke Nukem game that acutally gets released would make big bucks off the fame and novelty factor alone. It might not be made from the assets of Duke Nukem Forever, or even be named that, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it.

And with 3DRealms going bully-up, the odds of them selling the Duke franchise to make this a possibility are good. I think it's a good idea, too. Duke Nukem Forever is a huge debacle, and now, no matter how good a game it was becoming, it probably couldn't live up to a decade's worth of expectations. It needs a fresh start from a different company.

umm... That's not what happened man. The game is at the same stage it's been for years: a title that people still claim to be working on.
3D realms has folded, that's what the real story is about here.

I don't know.... they've been showing a lot of Duke Nukem Forever assets recently. Now granted they could have a whole trunk full of artwork and not have worked on the game, but certain screenshots indicate that some parts of the game were pretty far along.

Duke Nukem Forever screenshots and artwork

Not to mention video footage like what Subcultured posted, or footage I saw on an internet video show.

It's not a case that 3DRealms was pretending to work on it. Maybe it was on hold for some of the time. But it's more like they were poorly managed. Just when you thought they were pretty far along in development, they'd switch engines. They went from their own proprietary engine to the Quake 2 engine, then the Unreal engine, then I lost track after that. I wonder who was calling the bone-headed shots that stretched development out that far.

I don't think this is news. I think we all knew this already...

Yeah, I know they were sort of working on it, what I meant was that the news wasn't about the end of the game, Sub was wrong in that. It's about the end of 3D realms.

Ha ha. I heard this on the radio the other day.

I really wasn't that surprised.

It's a distinct possibility... although a remote one that 3D realms will attempt to sell the unfinished game to another game developer but normally that kind of progress takes years and years.

Remember how long it took to make a sequel for Fallout 2?
Those were my two cents.

heh, It'd be good if they did come out with it. The time is mostly irrelevant to me, as long as they kept in the raunch and the humour, that'd be all that mattered.

Was there ever any doubt that about duke?
After this long, did anyone really expect it to ever get released?

Well, according to a former employee they never even intended to finish it, just keep you thinking.

I'm now reminded of this experimental pilot made by few game critics.

It's no secret that Yahtzee was no fan of 3DRealms.

P.S. It's almost 4 minutes in and then pops up again and again over the video.

Hmm.... I'm gonna make a new topic about this video.

Here'a video of more recent work on Duke. It looks really, really good actually.
I hope there's someone to carry it through to the end.

My guess as to what happened was that the development just dragged their feet a bit for whatever reason and when technology and standards changed pretty rapidly they had to do expensive redesigns to keep up with the times. And that must have happened at least twice, maybe 3 times. At the end they were probably being starved of the funding they needed to actually complete the thing because the parent company was annoyed by lack of progress and so members were only able to work on it on a limited bases. -That's a guess but it's not a unique scenario by any means. ;)

Yeah, they completely abandoned at least one game engine at some time in their development. The video looks cool. I enjoyed the silliness that was Duke Nukem 3D back in the days. If it's ever released I'll probably play it.

Of course since they've been waving the peace of meat that's labeled "we're developing a new Duke Nukem game" in front of us for so long that expectations may be a wee bit high. I'm just constantly reminded by something that Yahtzee said at one point: "I hope that 3DRealms understands that if this game doesn't turn out to be histories greatest contribution to human culture and a cure to at least one type of cancer, then I and every other reviewer on earth are going to saw it's bollocks off".
Those were my two cents.

Even if the studio was still around I highly doubt we would have seen DNF for at least another five years. Apogee Software (3D Realms) isnt the best third party around.

The time is pretty much irrelevant to me. I can wait "forever" (lol), not because I want it that much, just because I can. i'd be interesting to see. :)

Take Two is now plans to sue 3DRealms over the Duke Nukem Forever failure. Apparently they put some investment into the game and kept trying to spur 3DRealms to finally finish it, and we all know how that turned out. I can't blame Take Two for wanting their money back.

I didn't know this many people actually cared about Duke Nukem.

A male friend of mine rented such a title a long time ago (he was 9). It looked awful.

I guess it was too great a name to simply let die. :B

Posting this here because it was just that relevant.

Ok. Apparently DD doesn't accept The Escapist embeds either so here's the link instead.
