Its the second film in the rebuild series.
If you're up to speed with Rebuild as a whole, then this is the film that remakes the tv series episodes 6-(apparently)19. Whereas the first film had minor changes to the overall plot and feel of the original story, this one will take things in a totally different direction than what we are used to. It even has a Unit 04 that didn't get destroyed off screen and a Unit 05 in it. Asuka doesn't even have the same last name!!

Didn't know they were doing this thing over again. But then, I don't believe it's a bad idea.
You know, back in the day, during the production of the original Evangelion (how are we supposed to call it? EVA generation 1?) studio Gainax was being torn apart by stress, internal conflict and lack of money. That's why the show kinda devolved from an action-thriller with mecha into what seems to be just a reaaaaaally long therapy session meant to cure Shinji of his shyness and force him to come out of the closet. But by that time it had built such a huge and rabid fan base that the producers stuck with it till the end, and the audience put up with all the pseudopsychology on the hopes of getting to see some kind of resolution... which came in the form of a movie in which all of Humanity is exterminated after all.
So, thinking about it, it seems natural that they decided to do one of the most beloved anime of the last decade in the spectacular and epic way it was MEANT to be.

Which you gotta admit, that took some balls to do. I heard about this didn't even know 2.0 had started, well time to track it down.

i dont believe in that whole "way it was meant to be" nonsense. I like the original series as it was, the fact that it was done the way it was done was what made it that much more interesting to me. This whole going back and redoing things "the way they were supposed to be" reeks of Star wars "messing around with the original trilogy" bullshit. no thanks.
but ill still watch it because im a big fucking hypocrite and a sucker for EVA

Wow. They're playing allot more with the story in the second part.
I'm actually exited to see how this develops.
I loved the old series and I have to admit that the original ending was more like a therapy session if anything else.
I'm a follower of the theory that the show ending was about Shinji working out some issues in his head while the movie ending was the stuff that was happening around him.
Then there are people who say that the show ending is the true ending and that the movie ending should be dismissed. Then we have the people who claim vise versa.
Now we're gonna have those who will undoubtedly hail these movies as the one true story as well.
This is such a fragmented fanbase.

I always figured the show ending was an extended version of what happened in the movie when Shinji was subsumed by the giant rei/god/omniconsciousness thing, ultimately choosing life on earth as an individual with all it's pain and loneliness at the end.

which movie are you talking about? If youre talking about End of Evangelion, that movie hurt shinji more than anything...they completely took away all of his character growth in the episodes. jerking off over asuka then hiding under a chair is not the continuation of where shinji was going in the series.

Oh right.... I had completely forgotten about that part.
I think that's one of those scenes where you go "No... Shinji... You don't do that." then proceed in burying this info deep enough in your data banks until you forget about it.
Let's hope that the new stuff will do them more justice.
Those were my two cents.

fun fact:
The letters breifly shown during the finale of End of Evangelion are death threats that were sent to Studio Gianax after the series' original conclusion. Also I wish the end of the world could really be as cool as it was in the movie. The whole segment where the main characters encounter the ones they care for the most before being turned into a puddle of LCL and assimilated was really one of the most gut wrenching things I've ever seen.
Also anything that uses the Otz Chiim as well as The Chamber of Guf just flat out owns. In fact, Hebrew mythology owns.
God damn I cant wait for this.

i just hope they answer some of the questions in eva...like:
who shot kaji?
how did shinjis mom really die?
what exactly WAS the second impact, since its hinted that it wasnt really the angel?

They pretty much answer those first two in the series, you just have to watch it really close.
Kaji was killed by some security officer at SEELE. They have a pretty open discussion about it when he goes to rescue Fuyuske (sp?) about how SEELE has started to realize he was a double agent, and how his actions will result in his imminent death. And as for Shinji's mom (Yui), she became one with unit 1, just like Shinji did when his body vanished momentarily in the LCL. Ritsuko said it had happened before and they failed to recover the person. Shinji feels his mother's presence when he disappears into unit 1. Commander Ikari calls Unit 1 Yui a couple of times throughout the series, too.
As for the last one... I thought they went into that in the movies... but I only saw those once so I have no idea.

The fist two questions were a little bit more clearly answered in the manga series...
Is heavily hinted that Kaji was killed by Gendo
While I really loved the original Eva series and I'm really looking forward to this Rebuild series (still have to watch You are (not) alone), I really think that the great thing about the series was pretty much how some answers and mysteries about the series are open to the viewer to figured out by themselves...

What is an l-bomb.
Cause if it has to do with the women folk and the explosion of manly parts, I'm shocked that you dont know about my screaming homosexuality by now.
(ignore that there is a clear contradiction in the fact that I posted about being grossed out by a hentai where a dude becomes a chick. I'm just trying to disfuse your argument with a purely baseless one that I just farted out, do you like that it's called improv *toots*)

...I'm not liking the way this conversation is going... So I'm going to change it! HA!
I'm excited about this! I find the inclusion of a new Unit-04 pilot a bit odd, though. I wonder how that'll turn out... My main concern is whether it'll have an actual, y'know, ending. I've analyzed and re-analyzed episodes 25 and 26 of the t.v. series, but I've come to the conclusion that because they were produced on a low budget (evidently), the writers got lazy. The End of Evangelion didn't really cut it for me, either; hopefully Hideaki Anno has gotten over his "FU" stance with the fans.)
