KohdokNo, you misunderstood. They were saying that this wasn't a hate crime but if the same thing happened only a white guy murdered a black guy it would be considered one and gotten much more attention. You're pretty much interpreting everything backwards. Besides, murder is murder no matter the motive. "Hate crimes" shouldn't change anything, because as far as I'm concerned, murder is hateful.
What I find the most comical about that article is that the racist issue is just speculation. They are "supposing" that it is a hate crime, but there is no proof. They don't have the accused murderers saying anything racist or that the bodies were painted with black pride symbols, nothing like that. It's all just a ruse to get people riled up.
And here, unfortunately, it seems to have worked.

You're pretty much interpreting everything backwards. Besides, murder is murder no matter the motive. "Hate crimes" shouldn't change anything, because as far as I'm concerned, murder is hateful.
The way I interpreted the article was that some conservatives are saying that the media was trying to cover up the possible race issue and they were making a fuss out over it. It's a report over how some feel the issue was, and I quote, "suppression of a story about an anti-white hate crime" and are using it to get people to argue about it. They also don't mention that it wasn't a hate crime.
Perhaps I misinterpreted the fact that the article was trying to trivialize the argument, but this seems more like a straight article with nothing but facts rather than conjecture. Still, it doesn't mention that the conservatives have any proof that this crime was driven by racism, at least the portion you've showed; the story that is covered just reeks of propaganda to me.
Also, you cannot say that it hasn't provoked a response about racism on this forum. I still feel that this is one of the purposes of this article. I just don't want to be goaded into talking about racism, that's all.
If you can find a section of that article that can prove otherwise, don't hesitate to post it, please.

I didn't say anything contradicting that white-on-black murders get more attention, I just said that these kinds of things are often used to get people riled up. I would have said the same thing if the races had been the opposite, and Jesse Jackson had gone there like a rampaging rhino. People try to use anything to further their cause, like Charlton Heston having an NRA meeting where a school shooting had recently taken place. I was just commenting on how I don't like those kinds of things and how this article seems to highlight it.

In my school, this Chinese guy is constantly doing crap like calling me "Vanilla face" and whatnot. He's a perfect example of someone who thinks that just because they're not white, they can do all the racist stuff they want. Of course, he calls me racist when I get angry at him for the insults. And everyone sides with him. My best friends there are mostly of different races. Y'know, I'm like Cthulhu. If someone is cool, great. I hang out with them. If they're a dick, fuck them. Yeah.

I do think everyone holds a little stereotyping in them, whether it be bad or good. But i don't think joking about race is racist, its just humor... look at any joke, it is making fun of something.

I don't care if you're black, white, blue, green...
Um, if you're GREEN, I may just ask you to go see your doctor.
Seriously, I think the funniest alleged racism story that I dealt with was when I scored my first teaching job here in LA - It was at an upper-middle class school where most of the students were white and the ONLY people of color there were me...and the principal (We're both black). La Crescenta, California - near Glendale.
Anyway, I was developing more growth on my beard, I was also wearing grubby clothes, because I wanted to clean my classroom up a bit before the first day (I looked like Mr. Ecko from LOST). Two white female teachers walked by my room and saw me in their sweeping up. One of them turned around and tapped me on the shoulder saying...
"WOW, I haven't seen you guys most of the summer. Do you think when you're done in this room, you can walk over two doors down to MY room as well. It's really dirty in there."
Now of course, I said..."sure". She didn't know who I was, I didn't know who she was...But she found out when all the teachers went down to the library and the principal introduced the new staff - "...He's in Room 205 and he'll be teaching Algebra and an enrichment class for computers".
The female teacher's jaw...dropped. She apologize non-stop and I told her..."Hey, that's cool, I still swept your room".
Now, was her perception of me racist? Maybe...maybe not! But every time I entered the lounge (professional looking as always, shirt, tie and slacks - a tamer, trimmed beard) - she made sure to greet me with a nod and a smile.

Its simple affirmative action. Black people can say cracker and honkie all day, but the minute you even suggest saying ni- oh yeah, like i'm just going to say it here, people act like you just crucified jesus, burned the American flag, and fucked animals. Its such a weird world we live in.
It's not so much the word - it's the HISTORY that comes with it.
The N-WORD comes with a legacy of oppression - which stemmed from Africans being sent to America as unwilling immigrants and thrown into slavery. From that, comes the breeding of Africans like animals, splitting up the family structure by selling off parents and siblings like livestock, then they were FREE...but considered...3/5 of a man??? THREE. FIFTHS???
Some rappers and people of the black race are no better. The word becomes ownership as a term of endearment without thinking about where the origins lie. In my classroom, my students yell this out to each other everyday as a greeting. What's suprising is the white or Latino "urban youth" start embracing that word too - "Hey my ni**a!". The N-Word has been blended in our culture - To make matters worse...I was watching "Dancing With The Stars" this season (don't ask why)...and some ASIAN man, an OLDER, distinguised LOOKING Asian man, was asked what he thought about the present season of DWTS - in his attempt to be HIP - he retorted "It's off the HIZZLE fo SHIZZLE ma NIZZLE" (What do you think NIZZLE is - do you think HE knew what he was saying?) - and ABC aired that.
Words like "cracka" or "honkey" do not sure the social or legacy weight as the N-Word. Now if you're WHITE, but an immigrant, you might find some offensive stuff.

I've had this type of situation happen to me so many times I can barely count.
I go to a mostly white high school on the outskirts of Houston, TX. I'm in the top ten percent and I'm going to graduate magna cum laude (second to highest honors). I think it's amazing how people can't comprehend this. One time, I met this new girl and she instantly asked "So, what grade did you fail?" (what?!!?). Or I'll write a paper and my teacher will go "You did this by yourself? Seriously?". This one kid said he was ashamed to have a lower class rank then a black person (me). It's shocking how many people think I'm supposed to be an idiot because I'm black.
One time, my dad and I walked into this store to get something quickly, and we had on rough clothes because we had be working outside. Of course, the workers there thought my dad came to fix the roof. D:
But, I think the funniest thing of all is how some black people are racist against their own race! Lighter blacks sometimes insult darker blacks. My parents were born in Nigeria, so other black people make fun of my family because we don't have American roots. Or some black people will say that I'm trying to "act white". It's a funny world.

I've had something like that happen to me before. Now, I'm white, but I once went to one of those fancy-upscale grocery stores with the cramped area that's supposed to look like a city street and all that overpriced stuff. Tons of people looked like they were wearing some of their best outfits when I walk in wearing a free T-shirt and a pair of dickies.
I was asked several times for directions from people who thought I was a stocker... I don't shop there anymore...

You have your history incredibly mixed up. First off, slaves weren't "bred like animals." It's not like the plantation owner would lock up a man and woman in the barn and only let them out after she was pregnant. : P Secondly, of course they split up the family structure. That's standard slave treatment, regardless of ethnicity or prejudice. It wasn't something invented in NA. I mean, if you didn't, you could possibly get unified groups rising up. And third, the "Three Fifths Compromise" only applied to the national census, and only when blacks were slaves. (not after) Basically, it was done to make sure that the Southern states ratified the Constitution, and that they weren't getting too much congressional representation from... "nonvoters." So in reality, they were just considered "property." Which would make sense since, y'know... they were slaves. Now, I'm not condoning any actions here, just doing a quick explanation.
More on-topic, but... meh, I understand that nigger is a term that invokes a lot of hatred. But there's no way in hell I'm calling for it to be censored, especially in a "nizzle" form. (God, that just reads so stupidly when trying to be intellectual about it) if no other racist term is, either. That includes "micks," "kikes," "spics," "honkey," et cetera. None of those are terms of endearment, so to consider one "worse" than the other isn't right. Either everyone can say the word, or no one can say it. Either all of the terms can be said, or none of them can be.

Not mixed up, but also you missed my point.
I am prepared to agree to disagree with you. Yes, they WERE bred like animals. You would take a STRONG male and a STRONG female - like you would an ANIMAL and breed strong slaves.
Splitting families was part of the tragedy and history of the black plight - Glad you agree that it was so "standard". The bottom line is, it set a precedence for the idea of "family" which comes with the history of the word. A history of lost identity because of these common slavery practices.
I think the point of being considered 3/5 of ANYTHING, whether for votes or census, is insulting to ANY man - more insult to injury. It was more the principle of the thing...but thanks for clearing that up. Because, never mind the 400 years of oppression right?
"Meh"? Have you EVER been called a nigger? And if you're not black, have you ever been called something that offended you? Your family? "Meh"?
The term invokes hatred because of the history it carries. Kind of like a bad stench that never goes away.
And intellectual speaking, I didn't mention the nizzle thing to poke humorously at it. And here's where we agree - yeah, it IS kinda stupid. I wasn't calling on a censor, I was pointing at how something that started out so bad, became such a cool thing to say by way of...what...izzle-ese? I made it clear that the word itself does carry a history. And sadly, it started with slavery and is perptuated by further ignorance in our society.
Look, I'm a black man. I'm not sure if YOU are...so, I can only speak for how I feel about that word personally. What I DO know is that, I don't care for the word. All you really need to to is disagree.
WOW - It does get kind of mean in these forums. And nothing bring more friction that disagreeing on ideas of racism.
Great times though...
I suppose it's a good thing we're free to be sarcastic or insulting behind a keyboard and a monitor. Who knows what would happen if we were in all in the same room, hmm?
Now that would be fun :) - Would ANYONE have the courage to say these things in front of other people?

Somebody told you it was offensive. You grew up on that. You carried that idea with you for your whole life. If you grew up thinking the word "moose" represented the mass slaughter of Americans, you'd be pretty offended is I started calling you a moose. It's a word. Sounds you make with your mouth thrown together to form a language. Now personally, I don't believe I can "represent 400 years of slavery and oppression" considering I wasn't born until after you gained more rights than majorities. I know few realize this or even choose to accept it, but it's true. Banning a word seems to me like a test to see just how much power you have over us, and let me tell you, you seem to have a lot. Despite a proposed 400 years of oppression of white people, I highly doubt the word albeo would offend me. My point is, you're obviously going with what others say. Don't be characterized by your race by always agreeing with them. Don't be a "black" person, be a person. If you keep this argument up, we can never be united as one human species. By the way, "diversity" is one of the biggest excuses for racism I know. Why can't we just all be humans?

Moose? Like the cartoon with the squirrell? Good stuff!
It's a word with HISTORY - see, and I don't think a person on the receiving end of that word will ever get it. You are all speaking like you've never reacted to what a person has called you. Why are you guys so HOT about this issue? All I did was say my piece. Really. I never called for the word to be banned. I didn't say, "kill whitey", I just said I'm not crazy about the word - gave my reasons - and that was that. It's a personal preference. Seriously, folks...
And here's the thing...I AM BLACK. It's who I am. If a cop asks you for a description of who robbed you, you're not going to say, "He was a HUMAN - that's all I know".
I'm proud of my heritage, but not to the point that I spite others or their heritage. I just would like to be treated with the same respect as I would give others. Those who are getting all hot about an issue that isn't going away...make it difficult to live this human race utopia that you keep suggesting. I'm not arguing this point - YOU all are arguing. Then again, that's why this is in the debate and discussion file. MEH to that.
Look folks...unless ANY of you who disagree with me are black or have had ANY sort of racist banter or treatment thrown your way (I guess you didn't read my personal experience earlier on - WHAT? No smart answer for a personal experience???)...Just be nice enough to agree to disagree with me. Don't try and out-educate me, don't give me a speech on "coexistence" - Just agree to disagree and move on. Like a good human being - or better yet...be a human DOING! Or find another issue to harp on - like...someone's spelling.
You haven't lived my life - you don't even KNOW me as a human. I have a comic...we ALL have comics and every once in a while, we chime into a forum. This isn't Congress - I don't play the race card but I'm smart enough to know that racism still exists.
Get real.

Get real.
...Um, let's go... um... Yeah, I'm going to the TD now...
(Also, I wasn't saying you were racist or that all black people are or anything like that. You should know personally that I didn't mean what you said I meant in your post there. I'm not all hot about this, I'm just debating, that's all. I thought it wasn't a very hateful post, but whatever.)
i will also like to know you the more

I have a friend who is actually a Bastard... so it sometimes feels awkward calling him one... lol... so hard to get in fights with him.
And slavery was world wide at one point, the first slaves were actually sold to Americans from other black tribes who had taken war prisoners. The problem with America is after a while we associated slavery with a specific race.

Well, you guys must really go out of your way to make the two black guys that live in your entire state feel comfortable then. : P
lol. there's more black people here than you would be led to belive. There's also tons of Native Americans, polish people, legal Mexican immgrants (or at least I think they are.. could be illegal). There's also tons of chinese people....
So yeah, North Dakota isn't strictly a "white state" regardless of how it looks. So that's why we're much more harsher on discrimation and such.
I'm on hitatus while I redo one of my webcomics. Be sure to check it out when I'n done! :)
