Here is the deal: None of my UMDs play anymore. Not even the BRAND NEW ones.
Everything was working fine yesterday.
The only thing I've done so far (as in troubleshooting) was updating my PsP Firmware. They say sometimes the Disc Reading Error gets fixed after an update. This DID NOT work for me though.
So before I have to go out of my pocket and buy a new PSP, what can I do to fix this problem?

This happened to me once. But it turned out that all the disc case thingies were broken (I only had two games for it then)
Do you get an error message, or does it just not recognize any discs?

You know when you put in a UMD and you see that little circle at the bottom right? Well it just keeps going on and on, never reading the disc. Sometimes it'll say ''Disc Can Not Be Read'' after a few minutes.

This is exactly what happened to me. I thought it was the PSP, but it turned out that it was the cases that the discs are locked inside. You know that clear screen that you can see the disc through? If it breaks, the PSP will not read the disc. Check that. If that's not the problem, then I don't know what to say. This is really the only issue I've ever had with my PSP.

Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of the PSP being portable?
Maybe I'd have a better point if it didn't play games that belong on a console anyway.

No.
It's still portable. All you have to do is plug something in to a TV.

I don't really see where there's a "Belongs" involved here.
Games can go wherever. In fact, if they'd just put a second analog nub on it the PSP could play games just as well as any console.

What exactly is the problem with being able to play a portable system on a TV? Being able to hook the system up to a TV doesn't make it any less portable. Besides, it's not like Nintendo and Sony murder a puppy every time you play a portable game at home. With wifi built in, it's actually becoming more common for portable gaming to be more of an indoor thing these days, anyway, so why not have a TV out? Most portable DVD players have A/V outs, as well. Are they also pointless on those devices?

If it's becoming an 'indoor thing' then why bother at all? Why buy a portable fucking console if you're just going to sit on your arse and play it at home anyway?
As for portable DVDs, I can see a few uses for A/V outs on those.

Because maybe sometimes you may not be able to go outside.
Regardless of anything, the system is still portable. It fits in your pocket, you can take it on the go. The idea wasn't for you to go outside each time for play, that would be ridiculous. The PsP and the DS were made portable for the sole fact that when you go out, you can take something with you.
(We steered way from the topic, my PsP is still not playing my games, need solutions.)

Or y'know, you can just buy the PS1 and PS2 games that count for the PSP's entire library and just play them on their intended consoles.
See what I did there? I said that the PSP only plays ported games and rehashes in a humorous manner. I love myself.

My portable gets a fair amount of game time at home when I'm working on the computer and waiting for something like a render or compile. I finished the entire new Adcance Wars in between spurts of work on my computer. It wouldn't help me much to hook up to a TV, but I do feel like there is some validity to playing a portable game at home.

Oh Snap. Maybe I should go buy Daxter, Wipeout Pulse, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and the rest of my collection on the Ps1 and Ps2.
Oh...wait a second, those games aren't on those systems.

I would love to see a video of you walking around outside while playing on your DS or PSP. I can't say I've seen too many people playing ANY video game without "sitting on their arse" or just standing there. Humans generally aren't built to dedicate their attention to multiple things at a time. Besides, if a game is fun, I'm not going to wait until my next trip to play it.
As for portable DVDs, I can see a few uses for A/V outs on those.
Apart from hooking the device up to a TV and/or stereo, what use would that be? It's the exact same principle.

No, they just have better more complete editions to the same series for a more reasonable amount of money per content. I own a PSP and I still play games on it, but I stand by my point. But whatever, waste your money.

So you weren't doing any homebrew stuff with it, right? Hopefully that's not the case, but in my opinion you've now got a "brick" on your hands. There should be a way to restore the system...
Still, I suggest getting the new PSP. The 2000 series. Better battery life (8 hours), slimmer design, and of course the ability to hook the thing up to a TV. Speakers are also in a different place as is the memory stick port. Getting a new one is up to you. :)

Well, older models had that problem with the square button (something to do with the actual "trigger" not being right under the button itself, since it was so close to the screen). Other than that it's just a bit more sensitive to damage than the DS, largely because of the use of a disc system. Usually it's durable enough to withstand normal wear and tear, but there are odd units in anything that's mass-produced.
