Sony just announced they are releasing a slimmer version of their PS3 model. It has a 120gb hard drive and a cheaper price tag 299$ US.

I've been holding off on a PS3 for awhile, but now it looks as though I may have to get one. Is anyone else excited about this news?

It's a Grizzly Bear battling Zombies. Do you need to know more?

I would be, but then I remember that the only PS3 game I'm interested in, Little Big Planet, I've already tried, and I didn't like it. Then I sigh.

Oh Sony, your PS2 was so choice, what happened?

edit: also I already own Xbox360 and Wii and I'm too old to be buying all the systems.

I have a PS3 already, so it's not of much interest to me. I think the slim is kind of ugly, but beyond that I'm not much concerened.

I agree, it's not exactly an attractive console. What makes me laugh is that this is the 7th (I think) iteration of the PS3, and Sony was so disdainful of Microsoft's two Xbox360s when it launched.

But making a cheaper PS3 was a good move. Developers kept whining about its price, and it was only slowing its sales. Hopefully now there can be a focus on making more games. I've only found a small handful of PS3-exclusive games I wanted to buy, and most of them were downloadable.

I like that it wont collect dust or scratch as easily, but it overall looks very cheap. At 300 bucks I guess it is, but still.

I'm happy with my giant PS3's glossy look and backwards compat.

EDIT: I can type, honestly.

I'm rather excited about it. It'll get more people to buy the system and less people to stop putting it down. The PS3 is an excellent system and most people won't realize that unless they buy it.

I'm tired of the console war and actually being able to afford the system will actually give people an unbiased opinion of it.

It's unfortunate, but I don't think even a lower price will get rid of unbiased opinions. There are still too many people who are happy to remain ignorant, and the price cut will only give them one less arguing point.

All three of the consoles are excellent systems when it comes down to it. It's the ignorant people who think otherwise.

In hindsight I'm starting to wish that I got an xbox instead of a PS3 so I could buy the slim now. Most of the games I've been playing since PS3 came out were PS2 because they just got so cheap after! Getting a 360 would have let me have a broader sweep of games to play while the number of 2nd hand titles increased and the price of games decreased.

Every system gets hardware tweaks over the lifespan of the system. I don't think that was what they were talking about with Microsoft having multiple SKU's. Apart from when the system launched in the US, Sony's pretty much stuck to the one SKU model. They change it every now and then to bring the price down and try to meet the needs of the market, but the fact remains, that they generally only have one console on the market at a time. Microsoft has consistantly had more than one ever since the launch.

Not true at all. Sony launched with two versions of the PS3 available and there has always been overlap as they rolled out new models. Even now, before the Slim launches, you can get either an 80gb model or a 160gb model with a few games. Sure, they're both discontinued now, but in their time they were offered as parallel choices.

True, but the different versions of the PS3 didn't have the drastic differences that the various forms of the 360 has. They all function pretty much the same as PS3's (with variation in performance as a PS2 and number of ports). The important thing is that the uneducated buyer will always buy a PS3 that functions more or less the same as their neighbors, but with the XBox there's differences in DVD functionality, internet connection, and whether or not it even has a hard drive, let alone the size differences.

Just to be clear on this, we're talking about Sony's humorous hypocrisy regarding having different versions of the same console available at launch and how it's "confusing to the consumer". I'm just saying it's funny how they backpedaled, not indicating Microsoft was any better in their console launch strategy.

Funny that people think it's ugly. I think all those PS3 models are ugly.
Still, I might buy it... I don't like to game much these days because it takes away from drawing time, but I'll see.

The 20 GB was discontinued right before the US launch. That's why the system was so incredibly hard to get compared to the 60GB model. Most sold out after the first couple of shipments. There have been no two separate SKUs in production at the same time apart from the initial 60GB and 20GB units. Even though you can still find the 80GB units, they were discontinued before the 160 hit the market.

You got the same overlap with PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox models last generation, but they were far less noticeable because the feature sets on the systems were for the most part identical. Still, there were issues that arose due to the hardware changes with some games. This is not a new thing and not what Sony was talking about with the multiple SKUs. Sony's not forcing you to choose which features you want to prioritize as much as they are just clearing out old inventory. You can still find the 2000 series PSPs in stores as well as the DS Lite, does that mean they're trying to market those as alternatives to the newer models? No, they're just phasing them out. You don't build hundreds of thousands of systems and then trash them. Yo don't flush money down the toilet when you aren't at the top of the market.

Actually, I believe they're still producing DS LItes, largely because there's still a demand for the system with a GBA port. The fats are completely out of production, though.

What a bunch of hideous looking consoles. The cube would probably be the best if it wasn't purple. -_-

Purple is the colour of nobility! Many mollusks died to bring you that console.

If Sonny decides to go with that price, then I probably will end getting the PS3...

I'm still hearing a lot of complains with the 360 reliability, both in Internet and comments from some friends (A friend got rid of 2 Xbox in 2 years due the Ring...).

Well, I still have until the end of the year to decide.

Have to admit that the main reasons for my to buy a next gen console are basically because of WWE Raw vs Smackdown! 2010 and UFC 2009 Undisputed...If it wasn't for those, I will probably stick to Emulators...

Damn... I'm being a conformist chicken and quoting the same...er...quote.

I totally agree though, consoles aren't the best-looking. I quite like the colour of the cube though.
However, I think the slimline ps2 is the best looking, seeing as it's small and neat. I see how you've missed the Wii out though...

The PS2 slim is neat and small but late 90's passee in design. The wii is there, it's just the black version. It looks dull.

Ugh... I'm still not buying the PS3. It simply doesn't have the kind of games I want to play. Of course I've read some news that the XB360 has also dropped in price...

I wonder how much of the cost for every console they sell are Sony and Microsoft swallowing. As far as I know (I could be wrong) Nintendo has so far made money from every console they make while the other two lose money and have to depend on their games to make up the loss...

Yep, Nintendo's been selling the Wii at a profit since day one. I think it's only a dozen or so bucks at a time, but I'm probably wrong by now (parts get cheaper regularly, and I heard this number a few years back). Meanwhile, PS3 and Xbox are basically losing about $50 a console, give or take. When parts do start getting cheap enough for them to conceivably make a profit they generally do a price drop. Even as sales increase, Nintendo's still the only console maker who has room to move comfortably with their pricing. They're also the only people making real profit off of software on the Wii, which is probably going to result in a bunch of Nintendo execs dying from an overdose of Money one of these days...

However, they're still losing money on their consoles. I still don't quite understand how this strategy is supposed to work. You lose money on every console you make, but you expect to make it all back by selling a lot of games. To me it's a risky way to do business; what if most of the games turn out to be duds? And does this mean the games are a little overpriced to make up for the losses? I'm sure that strategy worked once, but I doubt it will work every time. I could be wrong though...

Need to buy a bigger hard drive though. I've filled it up with game installs. >.>
