Here it is! Just what you wanted to know about the PS3 and more! Sony just got done giving their keynote address and here's what you can expect of the PS3:
PS3 Launches November 17th, 2006
Cell processor
RSX GPU
Dolby Surround Sound
Blu-Ray drive
20GB detachable Hard Drive
Four USB 2.0 ports
Ethernet port
Bluetooth for up to seven wireless controllers
One controller included
AV Mulit-out
Optical out
This is the $500 package.
If you buy the $600 package, you get:
- a 60GB detachable hard drive instead of 20GB
- HDMI out
- slot for MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash.
- Wireless IEEE 802.11 internet connectivity
The Controller
The conroller is no longer the silver "batarang" you may have seen pictures of. It now looks nearly identical to the Dual Shock, but wireless and with larger L2 and R2 buttons, what looks like a button similar to the Xbox Home button in the center, and a new feature... Tilt sensitivity! Now you can tilt your controller for added functionality in games! They've dubbed this innovation "six degrees of freedom".
Reportedly they've dropped rumble functionality because it interfered with the tilt features.
Nintendo and Microsoft keynote adresses will follow within a day. I always get excited about E3.

They basically copied Nintendo with it's OMG TILT SENSITIVITY, which makes me sad.

I've heard they dropped the rumble because of a lawsuit. I won't miss it, really. A few games found ways to use it, but mostly it was "the fish is biting, let's rumble the controller a bit.
$500/$600 bucks though? Metal Gear 4 looks awesome but not that awesome. There had better be a lot of good things that machine does other than play video games and DVDs or something. The whole reason I always liked the PS and PS2 systems were because they were relatively affordable and had lots of cheap games.

All it needs is a name with a bit of a toilet humour based flavour and it'll be a real winner!
That controller looks stupid... Like a prop from Barbarella.
I'm sure it'll be a fun game system though, when it gets cheaper. AT the moment at that price it's just like a dedicated gaming PC with none of the versatility.

My only complaints with Sonys previous fare has been the fact that they rushed them out to beat out the competition, so there were some technical bugs with the systems (like the way the PS2 would occasionally just stop reading discs).
But this year it seems they're taking their time, or at least not worrying about forcing something out ahead of Microsoft. As curious as I am about the "universal remote" controller for the "Wii", I think I'd be more comfortable with something like the PS3 controller.

I find it annoying how out of sync the consoles are now. Pretty soon we'll get a new one every two years, which we'll be forced to buy if we want the newest technology. 360's going to be a joke by the time Wii and PS3 finally decide to come out, which means they'll release something new a while later, which will make Nintendo and Sony jump again. Suuuper.
But anyway, DIE DIE STUPID SONY EVERYTHING YOU MAKE BREAKS

It might be a good thing for those people who like getting all the consoles. There's time in between each release to save money.
But for me, the PS3 is an impossibility. I just can't afford that. Getting the cheaper version seems like shooting yourself in the foot, because besides the hard drive, there's no word on upgradability for those other features you don't get. How would you add an HDMI port or a SD card slot later?
I'm a little disappointed at the way Sony downplayed motion-sensitivity but has now suddenly adopted it (last-minute, it seems. Only one E3 game has the feature so far). I guess it shows that Sony really does consider Nintendo to be competition.
Oh well. My future has been decided. Where once I entertained the thought of getting a PS3 to get the new games and catch up on the PS2 ones I missed, that pricetag means I'm probably getting it two years after launch, when it's cheaper and I'm out of college with a real job.
I guess it's Wii for mee until then. And maybe Xbox 360 will impress me with something cool in the meantime.

That's true, but I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I only tend to get two of every three consoles. Getting them all, especially considering extras and hardware, is much more costly than the Base Price 1 + 2 + 3 may give the impression of.

But why 7 controllers?
It uses blue tooth to connect to the controllers which supports eight ports. One port is used by the PS3 system itself, while the other seven are open for wireless devices. Although the new controller design only has four lights for controller designations. This has led many sites to believe the system will only support four controllers at a time while the other three ports will be dedicated to other devices like headsets.

It may be expensive but i dont really have a choice. Buying a Nintendo wii just because its cheaper would not make much sence.
Its all about the games and i know the PS3 will be supported with many great games. Nintendo will get the usuall Mario and Zelda but then what?

It doesn't have the HDMI port, but that isn't a requirement for an HD signal. The press release for the two system configurations can be found here [scei.co.jp]. Sony has announced in the past that in an effort to not alienate the many people who bought HDTVs early, they would support up to 1080p on any HD connection type.

But $80?? What are you smoking, Tater ?
(eh, what do I care? I don't even have an HDTV)

Sorry bout that Spang. Never got one (only one of our two HDTVs have HDMI... And it's not the one in my room....) so I used Composite. Composites were 50 bucks so I made a guesstimate.
you mean COMPONENT (or Y Pb Pr). Red/ Green/Blue jacks all for video signal.
Composite are "RCA type" jacks (Yellow for video, red and white for audio)
And you got ripped off for your component cables too. :P

If that had been true i would have gotten many more games for my N64 and i would have bought a Gamecube. But none of those systems had much to offer sadly.
If innovative is using the controller to fish and swing the sword with in Zelda the im out. People think gaming is geeky as it :(
Im not a sony fan boy, i just want great games thats not aimed towards 8year olds.

Wow, how incredibly closed-minded of you.
I take it you haven't seen Red Steel.
Yeah, ive seen it. You use the controller as a gun.
Some might think that is cool but i find it slightly geeky. Never been a fan of gun-games either.
