Rich is right about a few things. GTA doesn't set the standard for all games, just the sandbox games. Games from other genres tend to be very different. While I have enjoyed GTA in recent years, I can't say it's due to the story.

Can't say I agree with that, either, though. Mercenaries does look pretty good, but it also has less crap on the screen at a time and a much shorter draw distance. Less characters/vehicles means less processing to do and the potential for better presentation. Mercenaries also uses more instanced geometry so they have less to load into memory.

Normally I'd bastardize your post into oblivion before responding, but you did that fairly well yourself. And I did speak coherently without any 'omg gta sux! u sux!' comments. And I HAVE played every GTA game on the PS2. None of them really impressed me.

I don't think that's actually the case, qwerty... It's just that you've started some awfully strange topics lately, and GTA has sort of gone out of style thanks to the gangster theme and sandbox-style gameplay being overexploited lately. Three years ago you might have gotten a better response.

GTA:
Pro - They started up a new kind of genre.
Con - Their Hot Coffee debacle put videogames as a whole under scrutiny.

I don't mind cool games. It's just that some are horribly overrated or horribly overdone. GTA was fine at first, ya know, back when GTAIII came out and it was something new.

But there has been next to no innovation and for some unknown reason, a lot of companies are copying GTA with subpar results. And thanks to GTA:SA now, we get to look at shitty 'gangsta' games with horrible rap music.

That's what really did it in for me, GTA:SA's glorification of the 'street gang' lifestyle. Anyone with half a brain will tell you that 'gangstas' are about the lowest lifeforms on this planet, even falling below serial murderers.

Scarface: The World is Your is better than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Rockstar shoot themselves in the foot after making Vice City, it was a perfect game with the right amount of humor, a great soundtrack, a city that was beautiful that made you want to explore, and a great story.
