Phantasy Star Online, anyone?

That was pretty much all I did when I was in middle school and I always find myself missing that game, the soundtracks always ringing in my head.

I wanted to play online on the PC version again but it seems the servers have been down a while.

Anyone know anything about online play? Still playing it online somehow?

There is a way to hook up to servers run by the still existing fan base. I'm not sure what that way is, though. You might want to check one of the private server sites like: http://www.schtserv.com/ . Whatever the latest PC version was, I think their servers are still up, although I would probably recommend picking up a DS for Phantasy Star 0 or a PSP for Phantasy Star Portable 2 (not out in the US, yet). Both support online play and neither charge a subscription fee.

That sounds like a stout idea. Do you play any of these?

The only one I play is the Gamecube version and I don't play online since I tend to play on the Wii and there isn't any way to hook up to the private servers on the Wii.

PSO, despite having a subscription plan, was never an MMO. MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online. PSO was even less of an MMO than your average FPS at the time. Besides, MMORPGs were already an established and popular genre before PSO even hit the market. Nothing really replaced it since there isn't a whole lot on the market which mimics it.
