Paper less, erm, papery when scanned in

With my scanner, when I scan images in the paper looks, well, like paper. What I would like to get is something, not coloured or vectored or anything, but with white space rather than that horrid paper colour. I don't have anything like Photoshop or GIMP or anything (not allowed to download anything at the mo) but the closest is paint. Anyone got any ideas?

If you have photoshop, you can also adjust the Levels, though if your paper is too grey you'll lose some line definition that way.

I used to scan in grey scale
and that gave a pretty solid black and white look

I've had the same problem. >.> I've found adjusting the brightness helps more then anything. Most basic photo editing program (i.e. microsoft photo editer) should have the option to adjust the brightness. I also am restricted to paint... fun isn't it ^__^

Well, The scanner I use (until my main one's fixed) doesn't have those settings from what I can see. It only has 'scan as 1) Line art, 2) Colour 3) Gray.

Most come to worst you can just copy the entire image into PAINt and just go over the apropriate lines, and then erase the rest. It takes a hell of a long time though. >.> Ofcourse, it also makes it easier to fix any mistakes. ^__^
