Here's free drum kit I received recently. I'm pretty confident that they're from the mid-1960s and are very similar to the drums used by THE WHO.

They're a Vintage Ludwig Double Bass set circa 1965 with a sparkle blue finish.

As you can see, they're in horrible shape. They have mold, water damage, and lots of dents and scratches. But, my new project is going to be restoring these back to glory. Sounds like a time-consuming but rewarding project. I've never restored anything like this before, but the challenge sounds like a hoot. Insane, anyone? lol

I guess I'm sharing this to see if anyone else out there is a drummer? And/or is anyone else out there in to drum restoration? Or, are any of you guys a musician?

That's right, I'm a double-threat: a sh@tty artist AND a lousy drummer. lol ;)

When I'm finished, perhaps I'll post the results. What do you guys think?

I think I remember what C is on the trumpet...

I play bass guitar. It's a red Epiphone, not sure which model, pretty sure it's '70's vintage.

I'm a drummer! Wow, that's rough. You really need to buy some new drum heads and rims... the shells look to be in decent shape, though.

I'm a drummer too. That's a hella nice kit, dude. You need to get some heads on it and probably clean it really well, but that there's a classic. Keith Moon played Premier drums, not Ludwigs (that was Ringo). If you're looking for a good place to start, there are a ton of free lessons on youtube and at moderndrummer.com.

I put all new Remos on but I still got to get the hardware for the resonate heads (lugs and tension rods). I cleaned the insides and discovered it wasn't the original paint job, so I may just repaint it. I polished all the chrome and waxed the shells (still working on this actually) and I'm also cleaning the other hardware it came with. It had it's original Speedking pedal and bass tom mount AND tom floor stand.

Also, it came with a sexy Suprafonic snare in AWESOME condition. The best part is that all the keystone badge numbers are a close match meaning it's probably a matching original set.

I'm not certain, but I'll probably sell this puppy and buy a Pearl Export set with the loot... or maybe find someone to trade me straight up for a new export + hardware (they're going for about $750 right now with all the hardware).

This set is sexy but I don't think it's going to stand up to my travel needs and I can't really afford to have 2 sets right now.

So yeah, once I'm done I'll post some pictures. It's starting to really shine.

I've got a drum teacher locally here that's pretty pimp (AND he cuts his own bearing edges and has a granite slab... woot anyone?) so I'm doing pretty well. I hope to join a band here in a few months and perhaps do a coffee house gig. We'll see there.
