True... my hits went up by 5x a day... meaning 200x5 = 1000. :) Its not the millions and millions of hits they claim.

Be an interesting person. Be on a lot of forums. Having a great comic that is full of stupid/lame jokes gets me a lot of word of mouth hits. I put up flyers for my comic (and I mention drunk duck on there as well) in a lot of places I go. Whenever I meet new people, I always show off my work and talk about my work. Its about establishing brand familiarity. If people know you do good work or you get mentioned somewhere, they look up what you've done.
One thing I've found is when you talk about others on the interweb in your comics or on forum or blog posts, often they link to your work and send anyone that was reading their work to yours. That gives you a chance to hook people.
Also I try and turn every post on forums into a "hey have you read penis yet?" post, mostly for comedic effect. I'm on a lot of forums of varying quality with a lot of goofy people. If I could just get one or two really loyal fans from each place I visit, I feel like I've became succesful. Whenever people read my comic, they love it or hate it. Some people just like reading what I have to say or seeing what I'm up to on occasion, and some others want to wait a week and read a bunch of my pages all at once. I get where people come from with that stuff.
People are talking about me too. Not always good. Well, very rarely is it good, but people are talking about me. They know who I am and are familiar with my work. If you always do a good comic, the chances that someone will see that one really great page and read through some of the less than stellar material, you've established an audience.
I've never paid for advertising and I keep telling myself not to even think about it, but it seems like it works for a lot of people. I like knowing that my comics are as popular as they are without me buying an audience or stealing all my readers from one specific place. I'm considering a lot of options and will report back if I do purchase advertising.
Because who wouldn't click a link with the word penis on it? You're curious about it. You want to know what all this penis is about. Everyone else reads penis, why aren't you reading it yet? Its so underground, no one knows about it but those that click the link! Useless marketing slogan number seven! People just love penis! blah blah blah penis blah blah

Pretty much what Marine said... including the Penis part.
I would, personally, look for people who are willing to take your comic and give it ad space for free.
That's just me, though... kinda what I did.
Updates Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday's (depends).

I've had increasingly bad luck with advertising over there. Morely updating over there as a form of advertisement. Every time I do I lose a fav. :(

I was just wonderin, because the highest amount of pageviews I had in one day was 150.
My comic has 3070 pageviews, and the top 100 comics, and upper-top-1000 get that in like, one day.
Thanks!:)

I've been wondering about Onlinecomics.net...
Do you get more people browsing your comic if you have it listed in certain categories?
Are certain categories more looked at then others?
I remember putting a comic in epic scifi and getting nothing while putting it in horror mature gets more clicks.

JillyFooOnline comics is pretty decent.

Logically more popular, ordinary genres will get more interest, not things that people don't really know about.
InsanityWhen I was in the 100, yeah. 1000 on an update... sometimes 5, 6 or 7 hundred for normal days... In the top ten it's 3000 a day and up...
and the top 100 comics, and upper-top-1000 get that in like, one day.

I tried it just for fun (not necessarily looking for viewers) and my hits went from 200 to 2000. That's like, a 10x increase. o_O
But it's on the front page right now under "new comics" so that's probably contributing to it. I'll probably sink to 5x or lower when I get bumped off.

I think manga type comics might get more viewers than american style comics. A general assumption based on current trends.
If your comic is about shounen-ai though, instant viewers! No question about it, lol.

The return link is really simple. All you have to do is provide a link to www.onlinecomics.net somewhere in your page.
Type in
OnlineComics.net
Then over at onlinecomics.net, where it asks you to type in the return link, simply type in the url where you linked to them. It should be http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Emerald_City/ for you.
Good luck! :)

I am trying to subit my comic so I can advertise for this thing, and I am having the hardest time creating a thumbnail. Every time I try to make one in Photoshop, it's always too big. Even when I make one smaller than a size of a flea, even if I flatten layers and save the JPEG at 0 image quality setting, it still comes out to be 10KB or higher. Anyone have any suggestions?

i've been there before. I dind't add my comic to it though. The 5x extra viewers a day won't work with everyone. It just has to be an appealing title and plot.

I had a devil of a time getting a small enough image as well, until I checked their Help section. They have a link to a free service that reduces the file size significantly while keeping the image looking essentially the same (there are slight differences if you really look closely at a side-by-side comparison, but I would imagine most people won't do that).

I used to have that problem until I saved them as GIF images. GIF has a smaller file size.

Why didn't I try that. I have no idea why my photoshop doen't resize images but I just had to open it up in paint...PAINT!, to make it smaller. The quality went crap but you can still see hwat it is I guess.
My comics up on onlinecomics. It seems to be...ok, although I don't know if my hits have gone up cos it's linked to my other site. If only I could link it here too but I doubt it has that feature.

I really like onlinecomics.net
It's how I first got into webcomics and learning what doesn't work and what does work.(I'm lame...I actually had 100 posts there reviewing comics...lol)
My advice?
Create a bright, nice, colorful avatar.
And make your description good/interesting.(don't downgrade your comic in the description, people want the story not that you think somethings wrong with it)
It's a bad to place to be updated on comic listings, a great place to get hits and find comics, but not keep track.

My opinion. Who exactly is your target audience (ie. 30-40 years old ex hackers who wishes to learn to program Java)? Tell them about your comic. Locate similar webcomics and ask them to share an ad with you. You don't really want random visitor (what the point if you need to force somebody to read your comics). Make sure Google finds your comic (forums etc).
Read the Standard now. Perhaps the second best gender parody on the Internet.

Yes. It's all about forcing people to know your comic. That's something I call agressive realism. Ideally you want to target your 'ads', but ... Accept the fact that most people won't like your comic, even if you obviously do. The sad fact: Your comics need to compete against professional product (you can read most of them free on the internet).
Read the Standard now. Perhaps the second best gender parody on the Internet.
