Barney isn't really that scary. You want scary, look up 'Boobah'.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

I was in middle school then. :-P My parents say my sister and I ruined Barney for my little brother because we used to make fun of it -- but we didn't know he liked it.
I am surprised no one has mentioned Pee Wee yet. I used to watch that as a kid. That was a freaky show now that I think about it.

And I remember the guy who starred as "Pee Wee" being arrested while enjoying himself in an adult theater... No. No jokes about him playing with... nevermind.

Never saw the big deal about what Paul Rubins did. I mean, he was in an adult theatre... it's still a little strange, but hardly bizarre or extremely wrong or twisted.
I only saw his show as an adult, a few years ago, and even then it was too weird. The films were good though. I love it when he does the birdy dance ^:)

Pee Wee's Playhouse was an amazing TV show, it was so different to everything out there and it was perfect for kids. I've watched some of it recently and it still seems really strange- but as a kid I KNEW it was strange and that's why I liked it. As an adult it seems kind of ADD and simple but again, it was perfect when I was a kid. :)
Paul Rubens is actually a pretty good actor. If you look him up on IMDB you'll find out that he's been in a pretty steady stream of strange stuff.

My dad didn't want me and my siblings watching Peewee's Playhouse. He thought it would turn us into spastic idiots. But he didn't get up early on Saturdays, so sometimes we checked it out. At the very least it was one of the most original things on TV at the time.
I've heard rumors of the show making a comeback.

Though I don't find it disturbing, the whole suggestion that Race Bannon and Dr. Quest were "possibly" gay lovers. Almost as crazy as suggesting that Shaggy had the mucnhies because he was a "pothead".
Heh...yeah....crazy.

I can't quite remember the name, but it involved two plasticine cats. It was 'Meu and Mao' or something similar. I tried looking for it on Youtube, but my vague recollections weren't enough.
EDIT: Found it!

I still love it. I think 'disturbing' is actually a good thing.
That's why the old ones, like Pingu and Button Moon, are the best.
Edit: Duuuuuuuhr i no spel gud

It's Pingu with a 'u', but indeed, it's freakin' fantastic!
While you're at it, also look up 'Bumba', a popular Belgium kid's show. Just like Boobah *shivers* it's a weeeeird program, but this one has a terrifying clown! Not the cartoonversion they make lunchboxes from, but the real version has some kind of black eyeliner on, it's so freaky it nearly gave me nightmares when I caught it in a flash on tv..
And well, this topic doesn't really apply to me that much. With me it's mostly the opposite since I was a whimpy little kid. Most things that freaked me out back then I love now. I got scared way too easily. But ofcourse, scary stuff has something very interesting to it, so like most kids I was intrigued by it but in a disturbed way.
Especially a series about a witch, fully played by creatures made out of cardboard or something like that. I don't know what this technique is called, but it's a way of puppeteering, but then using flat cut-out figures, who look a little like shadowpuppets. The only image of it I could find is this [cinekid.nl] . Man, I was so terrified those creatures would rize out of my shadows at night!
The only exception I can think of right now was The Nightmare Before Christmas. It freaked out my family, but I was the only one that really got it. I was so fascinated by that movie, and it was a great time watching it on my own. Now my whole family has grown into it and they all love it. It's just not the same experience having them to be singing those songs afterwards and all..

I was watching the Superfriends just yesterday on Boomerang (Heck, I'm on vacation).
Anyway, Aquaman was show kids fun ways to kill time by doing cost effective crafts at home. It involved plates with smiley/frown faces on them...and beans.
Then, Superman had a "the more you know" scene explaining the hazards of starting a cigarette habit at a young age. Some kid playing little league was smoking and suffered from coughs and shortness of breath. He said, and I quote:
"Don't smoke, it doesn't make you cool...it makes you a loser".
Tried youtubing this - it was just too crazy to see.
