Old games you wish you could play again

A lot of PC games I enjoyed are not around anymore; they existed only on floppy disks and were executed through DOS. I liked games that made you think and were entertaining at the same time. The ones that let you pick up objects, and you had to figure out how to apply them to get to your goal. ...They just don't seem to make games like that anymore.

Here's my list of old PC games I wish I could play again:

King's Quest 1-6 [en.wikipedia.org]
Space Quest IV [en.wikipedia.org]
Monkey Island 2 [en.wikipedia.org]
No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 [en.wikipedia.org]
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis [en.wikipedia.org]
AD&D: Eye of the Beholder [en.wikipedia.org]
The Adventures of Willy Beamish [en.wikipedia.org]
Legend of Kyrandia 1&2 [en.wikipedia.org]

...I also recall enjoying a few games for the Commodore 64:

Friday the 13th [en.wikipedia.org]
Bruce Lee [en.wikipedia.org]
Park Patrol [en.wikipedia.org]
Spy Hunter [en.wikipedia.org]
PayDay!
B.C. II: Grog's Revenge [en.wikipedia.org]

...How about you?

I'd love to play Conker's Bad Fur Day. I'll have to remember to find it for the Xbox.

Actually, It's not that hard to play these games again. Sure you can't just pop the floppy disk... (my computer still has a floppy disk, yes (I kept it for sentimental value)) and expect it to work on your dual core Vista machine. There are however plenty of ways around the compatibility issue.

There are allot of hard core programmers that miss playing these old games and constantly make emulators to simulate the dos environment. One of the most popular one is DosBox. They also make Commodore emulators, Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive and so on. The only issue really is potential moral ones. You can argue that downloading Mario Bros to play in your PC is stealing but if you bought the game as a kid and you still own the damn dusty cartridge in your basement then you can argue that you purchased your right to play the game and thus aren't doing anything illegal. However, if you never bought the game then you're a dirty thief and should hang your head in shame.

I've gone down the memory lane on many occasions. I've played all the King's quests games, the space quests ones, the monkey Islands, the Indiana Jones ones, the Kyrandia ones and more.

Some are easier to access then others. I remember having heck of a hard time trying to get the Crusader games (undertitled "no remorse" and "no regret" ) to work. I finally managed to do it eventually and the resulting mayhem was exquisite. It was the first game I ever played that offered detailed death animation of various types. You could shoot them, burn them, kill them with bio weapons or a ray gun and more and all the deaths were drastically different, ranging from running around burning with arms flailing to melting their flesh of, leaving only scorched skeleton. Ah... so many good memories.

There's one game I've yet to be able to replay. Diskworld 2. It has compatibility issues that no one seems to be able to solve. What I can understand of it is that the Dosbox(and similar programs) are unable to find the CD for that game for some odd reason. The only way to play it is to fish up an old computer running Win 95 or older. Running Diskworld one is peace of cake though.
Those were my two cents.

Yeah I've tried a few emulators, but it just isn't the same. I'm not sure why. I also don't like the risk factor; lots of those websites scream "I'm a virus; download me!" I'll have to take a look at DOSBox; though the conniving little man on the logo kind of scares me. ;)

Well good luck with that. I have DosBox myself and I guaranty it's legitimately virus free. I also recommend getting a program called D-fend. It works with DosBox and other similar programs and streamlines the whole progress of programing the game for you. It makes it considerably more hassle free... as soon as you learn how to use it.

If you need any help, just ask here or send me a PQ. Both are good.

Edit: Oh, and that conniving man is your adviser for the Harkonnen if you play them in Dune II. They're the bad guys.
Those were my two cents.

Carnival. It's a cute little shooter game, I think by Universal and made for Coleco. I really miss playing it.

Another one that came out in the 80's in the arcade, a little collect the gem game with varying elevations on a diagonal set up. You played a little ewok/bear guy. I believe it was called Crystal Caverns, but I'm not certain.

Legionnaire, a largely unheard of beat em up from the 90's when Final Fight was big. It was an arcade game... not sure why I want to play it, I think the presentation of the content was much stranger than other games of the time somehow and I might want to resolve my memory of it as accurate or not.

And really obscure, Black Widow. It was made by Atari for the arcade.

Lastly, I can never get enough playing Lady Bug for Coleco or arcade. I rule at Lady Bug. It's a pac-man knock off mostly, but uses rotating gates as strategy instead of just running around.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Yep, I remember those two games.

I think the bear one was called Crystal Castles:

Hong Kong Mahjong. I don't remember who published it, but it wasn't one of those "match the Mahjong tile" games. You could take on 3 other computer players using the actual rules for the game. Took me a while to figure out what the tiles were without using the help function...

And then there's Death Race 2000...

Final Fantasy IV. Oh right, nevermind.

Okay seriously now let's see, I used to play a game called Cosmo which had this little green alien with suction cups. Also Word Rescue and Maths Rescue, yeah I know their learning games but I really go into them as a kid. Always wanted to try the sequels to them but never got the chance on all three games I listed.

Also there was this other game called Count Down I think? It was kind of a learning one too but there was puzzle solving involved as well.

Also I vaugely remember this DOS pinpall game where I managed to break it by accident and the points just kept going up. No one beat my score!

I had always wanted to try King's Quest but sadly I only found out about it years too late.

Also Curse of Monkey island 1 and 2, I tried 3 didn't care for it.

I thin that's it for the moment, but I'll give it some thought.

Whoot! We just hit fifty comics!

It's not too late to try it now. You can get the kings quest collection which includes all the games where they've been "modernized" to work with more modern computers. They did the same thing to all the Space quest games, Police quest and Leisure Suit Larry.

Well I hate being technical on you... but technically The Curse of Monkey Island was only game nr.3. The first one was called Secrets of Monkey Island while the sequel was named Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. They also made game number 4 called Escape from Monkey Island. It's in stunning 3D.
Those were my two cents.

Wish I could play it again. I still have my copy, but it runs really buggy in modern versions of windows. You can slow the speed down so it runs at the right framerate but the game still crashes because of other issues, so I can't get past the intro sequence.

It's really kind of unfortunate since it isn't THAT old of a game.

I had this Sega package that had Sonic CD, Sonic R, and Sonic 3D Blast for Windows.
I lost it a long time ago and even if I found it the disks would probably be all scratched but those would be the old games I wish I could play again.

There's an emulator that was specifically made runs the monkey island games, including all the other Lucas art games like Day of the tentacles and Sam & Max. It runs them perfectly, no bugs or problems. Perfect frame rate and no ridiculously fast game speed. You need to own a copy of the game and have it installed in your computer to make it work. Originally it was only made to run games that use the Scumm engine. That is the game engine that Lucas art used to make many of their best games. They've since expanded a bit and made the list of playable games, larger but Dosbox is better because it can be used to play virtually any old game. It's just more complicated to use. There's an issue with one game that I know of, The Broken sword games played though the emulator won't load the cut scenes but the designers solved that by offering downloadable packs that contains the cut scenes that the emulator will run. You just need to place it in the game folder.

Here's info about the software and a list of games it runs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScummVM [en.wikipedia.org]

Their website contains the download for the software, all kinds of support, and couple of games that have become freeware. Ever played Beneath a Steel sky?
http://www.scummvm.org [scummvm.org]

Oh. And if you get D-fend like I mentioned, it also runs this emulator so you can just load up that program to access all the Scumm and the DosBox games that you've installed.

Edit: Ok, technically I don't belong in this discussion because you're all talking about games that you miss and wish you could play again. What I'm saying is that you can actually play them again. Compatibility issues with most of these games can and have, in many cases, been solved.
Those were my two cents.

Last Call: Yeah, those'r the ones. The Crystal Castles in the arcade is much different looking, more graphically refined. Ahh... Carnival and its damn bullet eating ducks.

I had something just like that, but it excluded 3D Blast and included Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well as a Sega compilation featuring Shining Force and Comic Zone.

Let's see...well, there are some games I wish I could go back and re-experience the first time I ever played them. Namely Pokemon Red, because that was the best time of my childhood. It was also my first real RPG, so a lot of the concepts were new to me. I remember getting freaked out when one of my Pokemon was poisoned, because I had no clue why the screen was flashing and why I had died a few steps later.

Ah, to be young and ignorant.

I played this PC game called Jane of the Jungle (or something like that - adventuring amazon woman, puzzle solving while avoiding danger, hee) a lot when I was a kid in some computer class.

I want to play it again. I felt like a hero the first time I beat it.

I also kinda want to "play" Mario Teaches Typing again.

Some games I'd love to play again for the very first time:

- Okami
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Pokemon Red
- Mother 3
- EarthBound

I'd like to play Link's Awakening again. It's probably out there somewhere in a pirated format I could buy a card and put in my DS, but... that's a lot of work. And uh, illegal. Actually, come to think of it, I don't have a copy of Minish Cap either. That one was great. I might have to ebay for it.

I do have my cartridges for the two Zelda gameboy color games (oracle of something and something else), but my DS won't play them. :[

As for the old Hong Kong Mahjong game I mentioned, I found a game that plays like it on the X-Box 360 marketplace called Funtown Mahjong. Even better, I can go up against 3 other LIVE players. I'm glad it's not one of those "Match the Tile" mahjong games. :)

Now I wonder if the "Thirteen Wonders" hand is legal here...

This is a longshot but... maybe you can find an emulator to install and run windows 95 on your computer. then install the game. (I have a emulator that allows my mac to run everything back to windows 3.1! )
