Aw. I like these kinds of videos of unlikely animal species being friends.
"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Sad, because dogs don't live very long, whereas elephants do...
But the friendship part is great. I remember something similarly disparate pairing with a giant tortoise. I can't recall what the species of the other animal was though.

Just like people and dogs? If it was a human rather than an elephant we'd assume the dog was a pet...
I read in one work evolution that the tortoise was friends with a human. They do outlive us.

Nonnonononon, I remember now! The giant Tortoise was BFF with a pygmy hippopotamus!
The hippo treated the tortoise as its mum and the tortoise looked after the fat little thing. They were much happier together than apart.
Eh, "pet" is an artefact of some human cultures, while for some people the animals they keep are for their produce only or else they're pure work creatures- for hunting, pulling a cart etc.
For the elly the dog is probably more like a child elephant or sibling. That'd be about right, since that's the root of the human pet dynamic usually...

I have heard about how animals from different species can easily bond given the right conditions, and it can be quite beneficial for both in most cases.
Dogs are pretty adaptable; dogs and pigs, ducks, horses, cats, tigers, whatever.

Some species of parrots (normally the bigger ones) can reach an age of eighty something. Thus it isn't uncommon of parrots outliving their masters as well.
Jay Leno covered this "dog loves an elephant" story the other day. Although he twisted it up with some of that witty humor of his.
Those were my two cents.

True, elephants can almost live as long as humans. Except this is a sanctuary, so we really don't know how old the elephant is at this point.
I remember reading about the hippo and the tortoise too. ;)

Gawd... that's adorable. I want a friend like that.
Get a dog. Not a rodent dog that's always yipping because it has a complex about its size, but a medium-large size dog that is secure in its dogness and will just shower you with unconditional love.
Alpha male, child-parent? Companionship. Superior/inferior?
Hey, cats keep humans as pets. ;)
The way some people pamper their pets you wonder who is keeping whom. :)

This reminds me of those stories where a pet dog has befriended an orphaned lion cub or something and you think, "yeah, and how long is that goind to last?"
