That is disgusting. The people behind the idea obviously have no idea about gay people beyond the effeminate stereotypes that are unfortunately prevalent throughout society.
I can honestly not see why gay soldiers are less effective than straight soldiers. Or, for that matter, bisexual ones, too.

Actually, there was an army of all gay men in ancient roman times (I think). It was considered the most fearsome armies in the world, as the men would fight to impress the other men on the battlefield.

From what I've read the whole thing (and a few other ideas), were never much more than a brainstorming thing... Just silly proposals. They tend to come up with a lot of crazy ideas in those in hopes of finding something good. I think this goes back to the 60's.

I don't think the idea behind it was that gays are incapable of fighting. I think it was more that they would become irresistibly attractive to each other and would be incapacitated because they were... Being very friendly with each other.
