By this point, everyone has heard about the PSN being attacked. Majority of people have speculated so far that it could a disgruntled customer, but it's hard to say for sure.

More recently, a game that I partake in called Heroes of Newerth suffered an extreme DDOS attack. The rumor going around, started by a staff member no less, claimed that three players were preventing stats from recording should they lose a match, got banned for it, then retaliated by clogging the servers and thereby shutting the whole game down for about three days. At the time of this posting, it's still being handled with.

So will this be a new trend in irate gamers? Since they can resort to hacking or attacking servers, will this be a way they show their dissatisfaction for a company? I'm especially worried for all the indie developers out there. They definitely wouldn't have the hardware or manpower to deal with an attack.

Wow... so if you're not allowed to cheat in an online game, you'll destroy the game instead to keep others from enjoying it? O_O

Yeah, it sounds ridiculous, but for some reason it's been the case for at least one game I play!

I'm trying to come up with motives as to why someone would want to target a video game company. One could say it's purely for amusement, but that seems a little contrived for a reasoning seeing as it's a form of entertainment.

The more logical explanation is that they just want to get back at the company. And that sometimes means ruining it for everyone else.
