According to several interviews, he does return to work shortly into the season, but with "major ramifications".
It would be nice for them to change up the formula, because frankly (as a House fanatic even) it's started to get stale.

I agree with lefarce, every episode has the same formula (doctor diagnoses patient, patient gets even worse, drama ensues, House has an epiphany from something someone said, doctor makes the right diagnosis, everyone is happy), but I was really happy with the way the last season ended. The supporting characters couldn't rely on House for help, which made it interesting. This upcoming season looks good too, though I am curious to see how long they can pull off having House in an insane asylum. I am anxious to see how it will turn out.

yeah, house episdes are pretty consistant, which is why i suppose there were always those back stories, like Kutner killing himself, 13 having cancer, kuddy trying to get a baby, and of corse, House being a junky.and the repetitiveness never really drove me away due to the fact that the dialogue was always just so fun to try to keep up with. but i gotta agree, it's time to move on.
the only thing is after i watch House, i have a bad habit of thinking im a doctor.
"oh no i have a splinter"
"that'll become infected in no time and all yer organs'll start shutting down,we better operate!"
"oh no im fine i swear! see? my mistake! it was just a pen mark! comes right off!"
"shit yer delusional,it's gotten to yer brain! gimme that arm! good, now where'd that peice of broken glass go?"

Uh, 13 has Huntington`s Disease, not cancer. It's a genetic condition that causes the brain to rapidly lose it's cells. I think what you mean to say is 13 IS a cancer, because she's by far the worst character on the show. A whiney bitch hellbent on being the team's golden egg even if it means sabotaging others. All the while being a gigantic puss about her ailment which will kill her (eventually and not quickly enough). It doesnt help any more that the actress playing her is just bad in every possible way. I would rather Amber be a team member than 13.
The proper way to watch House is to suffer through all the terrible "diagnos the patient" parts to get to House being a badass. After so many seasons of this I'm just kinda sick of all the filler. Him going crazy was pretty rad, and I liked the extra kutner cameo near the end. Plus the giant mindfuck that almost all of one episode was just in House's head, which also makes sense of other bizzare moments in the following episode. It was a great finale, and I really cant wait to see how they play off of it. But I really hope that when it comes time for house to leave the loony bin, that they wont return to the same formula.
Either way I know I'll have to deal with 13 a while longer. Shit.

Ugh, I couldn't STAND Amber! It wasn't just her personality, either; I found even her facial expressions to be nausiatingly annoying. It was even worse because the writers kept bringing her back over...and over...and OVER AGAIN. Even from beyond the grave she won't go away! I did love the way the last season ended, though.
I agree with what you said about 13, though, lefarce.

Maybe if that detective guy Tritter got shot and House started having visions of him. That guy was badass.

I could fall alseep with Tritter's smooth baritone and hypnotic gum chewing. And it would be the best night's rest in my life.

Then he would arrest you in your sleep and investigate your drug addiction. But he'd do it so smooth you wouldn't even wake up.

I'm gonna be a geek here and say that a few years ago I worked at the 20th Century Fox movie studio in L.A. and while eating lunch at their commissary, Hugh Laurie walks right in front of me. ...And I didn't even realize it was him until someone told me. (I don't make eye contact in public, heh)
Then I go back to work and Tom Arnold held the front door open for me while smoking a cigar.
This is all true--it was a really cool experience to work there.

Found the job opening on the internet. From what I remember, the site I found it on was Showbizjobs.com . Worked at that job for five years.
