Well I picked up the new Garfield and I have always been a great fan of Jim Davis.

He is running out of a lot of ideas though.

The comic before this new one was not good at all.

But I was reading through this new one and he has some dumb ideas, but then he comes out with some really funny ones again.

So I am pretty impressed with the new comic.

Garfield is the corporate fatcat of comics.

Jim Davis isn't running out of ideas; he doesn't need to. The comic's been done by a crew of people (Paws Inc.) for years. Last I heard, he doesn't even feel the need to approve a strip before sending it out anymore.

Garfield is funny, only if you're an American.

Garfield is easily the dumbest cartoon character ever. His adventures are more predictable then my comics.

I'm american, and I agree.
Garfield used to be my favorite comic.
He's running out of ideas though. So many of his jokes have been repeated. 20 years will do that, though.

Especially since he isn't writing it anymore.

Oh, I meant I still like the animated cartoon, "Garfield and Friends". I don't like the comic strip anymore, though it's at least better than Cathy (and many others).

Worst newspaper comic: Family Circus.

Along those lines (um... kinda), there's always Silent Garfield .

It works most days. For example, today's Garfield would consist of Jon asking his cat "Why don't you move around any more?" and the cat doing absolutely nothing for two panels. Genius!

Jim Davis used to do another strip called U.S. Acres, which also was turned into part of the Garfield And Friends animated series.

I think it's genuinely strange that "Garfield and Friends" was a genuinely funny cartoon. And he sounded like Peter Venkman on The Real Ghostbusters. That's funny, too.

I found myself similarly confused last week, as I noticed some actual storytelling going in "Garfield." To cap off the strangeness, I liked it. Not "OMG! This is teh awesome! ROFL!" like it, but it was good, and at least one strip made me laugh out loud.

Anyone else experience similar reactions?

Yeah, I found it quite funny the strange twists that went on there. Lorenzo Music (the voice of Garfield) voiced Bill Murray's character (Venkman) in the first two seasons of the Real Ghostbuster (he was later replaced by Dave Coulier) and when the Garfield movies came up they got Bill Murray to do the voice of Garfield.

Lorenzo will probably always be the voice of Garfield for me. If he had still been alive I would have actually preferred him do the voice for the movie.
