I lack creativity in designing characters. I was wondering if anyone out there could help me to design the clothing (or hair design if necessary) for these two characters? Anything not too sophisticated to draw, creative and nice to look at is good enough. Thanks in advance.

It would help if we knew more about the type of world they lived in.

So far though, I'm thinking shorter hair for the male lead, because there are a lot of long haired boys in manga right now, from what I've seen.

You draw a fantastic looking drawing & you ask for help?

As hpkomic said what kind of world do they live in? Modern day? Fantasy world? Sci-fi?

Also what are their personalities like?
Some people dress like they are (i.e. a bold person might wear a leather jacket, or a shy person might wear concealing clothes).
Some people dress the way they want people to see them as (i.e. someone who wants to be accepted by others might dress like the people they want to be accepted by).

A person's job can sometimes affect their look, people who work around machinery might cut their hair short & wear clothes that won't get caught in the machinery.

Hmm, you've already got some pretty good looking characters there! But if you're looking for something to make them even more unique, try thinking about smaller accessories to define the character... like for the male character you could have a neck-chain of some sort, with a unique looking attachment of some sort... or even a tatoo or two.

The clothing itself is fine, but if you're not planning on using colour at all, then think about having some sort of design or pattern on the clothing to identify the character (as a completely random example, if you read the webcomic Penny-Arcade, one of the characters there always has a design of Pacman on his shirt)

For the female character, I dunno... maybe some kinda locket for her neck?

Hmm... thanks for the advice, guys. Gibbo kind of gave me a good idea about accessories. I'll see about the design of the accessories.

KAM: Actually, it's creativity in design that's holding me back. The girl has angelic dresses. The guy has normal clothing. So, I'm kind of uncreative when it comes to fashion design. Any advice on how to design a clothing nicely?

I second the comment that asks for more information about the characters. A character's personality will often give you lots of clues about the way that person might dress. Tomboys would be likely to wear pants and plain shirts, be untidy, etc. Someone creative would be likely to wear nontraditional clothes. Someone who likes to do physical work would wear clothes they could get dirty but would maybe show off their body a bit.

Rather than a dress, how about a skirt and shirts for the girl? I think a courderoy skirt, knee-length or so, would be nice. :) And perhaps the layered shirt look, with a long-sleeve tight shirt and a looser overshirt... or something to that effect. She could wear knee boots or something. :)

Depending on the guy's personality, he could wear more than just "shirt and pants" too. Is he sporty, does he like cars/motorcycles, is he artistic, etc? How about a button-down shirt instead of a jacket? Jeans or regular trousers? Maybe he likes cowboy boots...

Do you have any books on fashion or costume design? Sometimes flipping through those kinds of books will inspire something, or you might see something that matches your characters.

Here's a page of links to various fashion websites http://dizzy.library.arizona.edu/users/juarezm/History_of_Fashion.html [dizzy.library.arizona.edu]

Hope it helps.

Glad to be of service... and thanks for acknowledging, I've found that people usually don't ^^;

What they said. Yeah, physically, the face and hair are the most distinct parts of your average person. Haircuts, moles, dimples, scars, differently set eyes all serve to set the character apart. Not to mention that unique items of clothing or accesories as was said up there.

Then there is the body. Despite what some people believe, the human body is not entirely semetrical and little things like the length of arms and fingers varying may be difficult to keep constant, but it definitely can make a difference however small. And, remember that skinny people have long spindly fingers and toes. Chubby people have stubbier limbs. And, fer crying out loud people, not everyone is tall and muscular or built like a supermodel. Some people have round bellies and chests that can be measured with small lengths of tape. (Yeah, the skin color thing is spot on too.)

I read once in a design book that a good test of how well you designed your character is putting their silhouette in a crowd of people and seeing if you can tell them apart. If all else fails, stick figures!

It all about THE CHARACTER!

If the function of the girl is to look sexy - bikinis is one way to go. If she's a Catholic school girl, give her a uniform. If she's a prostitute, clear high heels are a must. If she's a goth chick - ripped black fishnet stocking everywhere. A punk Chick - tatters held together with studs and safety pins, and combat boots.

The dude, who is HE? A skater? - old ripped shorts, dirty wifebeater tees and dirty converse high tops, a spoiled rich College Frat boy - dressed sloppily in beer and pizza stained designer fashions, A computer hacker? - give him tees with geek verbaige (thinkgeek.com), he probably wears glasses and contantly drinks caffeine beverages ...etc.

Character determines clothes and accessories.
