Wow. I am surprised there isn't a topic about this already too. *o* Naruto is a good show as long as there aren't any fillers going on. I prefer to read the manga, but now that the fillers are ending on the present episodes, I am going to start watching again.

You probably don't see it mentioned much because the number of people who absolutely hate the show greatly outnumber those that love it. I got sick of it pretty quickly, even when I wasn't watching fillers. Couldn't stand the characters or the cliche plot elements. But, then, I tend to prefer oldschool anime, when characters had better, less lame reasons to kill each other and the social structures behind fantasy worlds made a little more sense.

It's like Naruto's purpose for the second half of the 1st series was to bring Sasuke back from the dark side. He fails throughout that whole thing(filler episodes included!), and then they cut away to 2 years later in Naruto Shippuden(the 2nd series)and the little shit still hasn't "rescued" Sasuke. I ain't voting for him for King of the Pirates, or whatever he's trying to be.

I'll tell you why I love Naruto... the kid yells EVERYTHING he says. And I mean everything. You see, I have a short enough attention span that if the character isn't yelling something every couple seconds, my gaze will wander and I'll be looking at my feet or the carpet.
"YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, SASUKE! I'M GOING TO BECOME A HOKAGE! DON'T GIVE UP, SAKURA!!!"
Plus, he gets bonus points for pronouncing "Sakura" so it sounds like "soccer-uh". I like it when cartoons take their own creative liberties with how to pronounce things, instead of going with the established Japanese pronunciation. How they say "Sesshomaru" in Inuyasha is another great example.
One other really neat thing about Naruto is that they have really cool fight scenes, and they never make you watch them for very long. Putting flashbacks in the middle of a fight scene is a great idea, because I always forget what they did in the episode right before the one I'm watching, and interrupting something I was interested in helps make sure that I'm paying attention when the flashback comes. In the middle of a fight scene is also a great time to focus on minor characters who are watching the fight. I always wonder what people are talking about during a fight, and Naruto lets us know.

I can't really judge, I have never seen it. I haven't been watching much anime lately...but if I did start to get into anime again, Naruto would probably be the last one I'd check out. It has never looked or sounded that appealing to me.
Heck I probably would only check out a couple of recent animes. I prefer the old ones too. XP

Well, I like Naruto.
I understand many find Naruto annoying but I really got into the show and the characters. What I digged the most were all the varied special jujitsus and abilities the characters had and reminded me of Kung Fu Theatre I used to watch growing up on Saturday afternoons. Movies like The 5 Deadly Venoms or The Man With Golden Arm. I do hate the filler one shot episodes and do hate the humanizing of the enemy flashbacks...i.e. Garra was picked on and killed the people he loved when was little. Poor little guy. He just needs a hug.

I know what you mean a lot of people do think Naruto is really annoying because of Naruto's catch phrase "Believe It" but he isn't really that annoying I personally believe that the jutsus that they use are REALLY AWESOME as well as their abilities like the Sharingan and Byakugan!!! I really believe that the flash backs they do in between fight scenes is very impressive and a clever thing to do in an anime. Also what your saying about Gaara-san is all really true because a lot of people in his village were afraid of him and didn't like being around him because they knew the Shukaku was inside of him, but if they ever picked on him Gaara-san would definatly kill them!!!

hmm this is an interesting topic...
Let me begin by saying Shonen Jump is the best value for your money out right now, comic fan or manga fan. 5 bucks for 400+ pages.
Now, when Naruto first debuted, I was like "ooh...badass its like harry potter meets ninjas!" Then that appeal left quickly. Now mind you, Im going to review the manga, not the anime, since i dont watch it *i dont like how "stretched out" the characters look*
Story: The first half of the manga was great...learn to work as a team, take a test, all the ninja "training exercises" really captivated me. this was a fresh new take on ninjas! And i was hooked. but when the series lost me was the whole Orochimaru/Gaara shit. Orochimaru is creep and queer looking, didnt intimidate me as a villain at all...then Gaara the Sand kid...again just lost me. The manga lost all its momentum and innovativeness and instead fell into the shonen ruts of "this is the next bad guy we must fight!"
Art: Somewhere along the way, they lost me here too. the early art was a very sexy, hatched look. but then the fight scenes got confusing, everyone got angular, backgrounds got more spaced....in essence, it started to look like the artist just "phoned it in".
And aside from that...the goddamn manga is taking over shonen jump and stealing room from what REALLY is the best manga in that book, ONE PIECE! *again i dont know about the anime, but that manga is the most dynamic and dramatic shit ive ever read* they put like 5 fucking chapters of Naruto in there, and then have only 2 or 3 one piece chapters. LAME.

I agree the Naruto manga and anime did lose me when Orochimaru came in and he really isn't that much of a villain when you think of it. I really hate Orochimaru especially the way he talks and the fact that he actually gave Sasuke a hickey *aka the curse mark*, and the fact that he WANTS SASUKE'S BODY is just REALLY sick!!!!

Gaara was just a lame emo kid. Like I really want to read about ANOTHER poor loser whos alone his whole life and seen as a freak *eyeroll*
thought his sand powers were pretty cool, but thats the problem with some of the ninjas in Naruto, and also another reason why they lost me as a fan. They make these ninjas like Gaara who can control sand...CONTROL F***ING SAND!....and they should never lose! EVER! but yet some idiot with scratches on his fight can win through sheer will? yeah...i dont buy it. i can buy it in One Piece, because its so goofy and off the wall, but Naruto actually tries to be serious with that crud.

One Piece sucks. The art is shit. (Yeah, two can play that game.) I've seen some of the anime but it was just so awful and juvenile, I couldn't take it anymore. And the rubbery main character is about 500x uglier and more annoying than Naruto.
Naruto has awesome art. Yes it takes shortcuts in the animation, but hey it's a TV series stretching 500 episodes, what do you expect? What I mean is I really dig the aesthetics; if I'm mentally trying to learn how an anime draws its characters, that means it's appealing to me. And yes, I know it has crappy hair. You don't watch Naruto to learn how to draw hair.
And, in terms of art, again yes it takes frequent shortcuts in animation. But when it gets awesome, it gets awesome. The scenes where Lee fought the bone-jujitsu guy with drunken-fist, the entire mannequin vs mannequin fight in the cave (in the new series)... honestly I cannot think of anything rivaling that level of animation and choreography in TV anime. And those are just 2 scenes off the top of my head. Ofc, the Naruto vs Sasuke scene as well, but everybody knows that one.
Storywise... yes, way too many fillers. But when it's not fillers, and when it's not mid-fight flashbacks, it was all very good.

I've read most of the manga, never watched the animu due to naruto's voice.
The manga started out great, the scenes with naruto crying over Iruka and later Gaara were really well done. Then the series went into the 'shipuden' phase and sucked from there on out. All the emotion from the first half was just killed out with a 'lol so mature XD' theme that sucked it down to the standard shonen formula:
1."omg fight,fight,fight!'
2.*Loses*
3."train,train,train!'
4.(repeat 1-3 again)
5."tiem to BELIEVE IT bitch!" *believes in himslef*
6.Wins!
(repeat 1-6 forever)
And on top of this the way Naruto is foolhardedly running after Sasuke is nothing short of homosexual. Sasuke's said like a billion times he hates Naruto and beats the snot out of him, and naruos like; 'believe in yourself! as i B-leave in u....'. And they both have a girl following them around trying to rape them, who they ignore completely.
Plus the latest story arc after sasuke's confrontation with Itachi has waaaay to many plotholes, It's almost like a retcon. I hope the anime does an actually decent job of explaining the bullcrap.

hahaha, I accept that challenge!
Where I feel One Piece trumps Naruto artistically is not the actual drawing of characters (although Oda draws some of the most charmingly adorable characters ever), but the composition of his images, his sense of dynamicism. He moves the camera all around his characters and it really feels like a 3d world. I cant speak for the anime because ive only seen one episode and didnt like it.
I can dig Luffy where I cant dig Naruto, only because I know One Piece is tongue-firmly-in-cheek, where naruto actually plays itself off as serious. Knowing the whole series of one piece is just a fun gag comic is why I can enjoy it and have fun.
Artisitcally I dont like Naruto because every fight scene looks the same to me. lots or sketchy blurry backgrounds, the action is hard to follow...for example, when sasuke fights rock lee in the manga i couldnt understand what the hell he was doing to his with his bandages until i watched the scene in the anime. I also dont dig how "long" the naruto artist makes his characters look. again, this is all aestethics here, but the world of One Piece seems more palpable than the world of Naruto. I love the fact that One Piece looks like Oda drew it with just a ballpoint pen at times.

I used to love Naruto. But in comparison to a truely obsessed fan I merely watched it. The first arc with Zabuza in it was great. The show sucked from then on. This goes the same for the manga.

gaaaaah yes, Kubo's style is absolutely perfect for Bleach.
I think everyone in the fandom is a little sick of the Arrancar arc. I'm just reading it for the epic butt-kicking that's bound to come at the end... or maybe we'll just go into another arc. :l

as a reader I jumped on during the arrancar arc....the whole thing smacks of DBZ, but It is still fun to read, if not to just ignore the words and look at the pretty pictures

i couldn't get into naruto. my roommate loves it, though.
i read the first few chapters of the comic, but then it started taking the standard route that EVERY popular japanese animated series and action comic made in the past decade takes.....
"lets have six or more characters. each one with their own special power, y'know so they're unique. it worked in DBZ, so it's gotta work for us too! then we can have them fight a big bad guy who is stronger and tougher than the last bad guy, but they lose. so they need to get stronger so they can win!" just make the characters demons, ghosts, middle school ninjas, pirates, card players, animal-people, aliens, whatever.
it's cool to have a deep volume of characters to pull from to keep the story interesting (like in ranma 1/2 or trigun), but the main heroes of the story don't need to be running their posse 6+ deep everytime. it makes it WAY too confusing for me, and not that interesting.

Actually, Naruto doesn't repeat the pattern of "Here comes a stronger boss!" of DBZ. There's actually an overarching plot, and villains are foreshadowed. And there is not Space Flea Out of Nowhere. The bosses seem to get stronger simply because the main characters are finally getting ready to go out into their playing grounds. In the past they're just kids fighting mainly the bosses' underlings.
