I'd vote Storm, personally.

I mean, for instance, the Hulk is the strongest physically, but anyone with strong enough mental abilities could easily defeat him. Even the weakest empath has a chance against the Hulk. There are too many different characters tht people could make an arguement for to turn this into a poll. It's whatever character would fare best against a large amount of characters with various powers. In my opinion, Jean Grey is the most powerful character, due to her dual abilities of telepathy and telekiensis, backed by the pure strength of the Phoenix. (As Jean pointed out many a time, she and Phoenix are symbotic, so I count them as a single character.)

What exactly is Galactus's power? I know he eats worlds, but...

I'm sticking with Phoenix, due to her inability to die and the fact she eats suns.

Well, from what I remeber of my old Marvel comics which I read back in the day, I'd say that Dark Pheonix could beat a whole lot of people.

Galactus is blessed with the "Power Cosmic," a veritable Deus Ex Machina of pure energy. In essence he is a living star, with power so vast that, were it not for his containment suit (and goofy hat) he would be destroyed by his own power. His power is so great that he must consume the life energies of entire worlds simply to replenish it. Silver Surfer, one of the most overpowered Marvel characters ever, was created by Galactus using only a fraction of his full power.

So, yeah, put me down as voting for Galactus. I'd also nominate Thanos who, using the infinity gems, killed half of all living beings in the galaxy to impress Death (who later brought them back to life).

And then there's Oblivion, who literally killed just about all of Marvel's most popular characters (who were subsequently sent to a pocket dimension and then brought back to this reality, somehow losing a few plot holes along the way). Oblivion was some sort of psi-energy demon monster made out of the combined energy of Professor X and Magneto. If I recall, it kicked Pheonix's ass, but I'm not an expert on this sort of thing and she might have just been dead at the time.

It kicked Jean's ass. She was working without the Phoenix at the time.

Okay, looking into Thanos some more, apparently without the Infinity Gems he can be defeated by Squirrel Girl (yes, that's a real character), so he's probably not much of a threat in the long run.

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot about The Beyonder. He's a character so powerful, Marvel refused to recognize his existance for a number of years because it was just ridiculous to have someone that omnipotent.

Yeah, but he had this really weird attraction the Rachel Grey (known then as Rachel Summers), which resulted in his "defeat". The only reason she didn't destroy him was that she would have to destroy countless universes to do so.

My official vote is for Iron Man.

He normally kicks ass, and he has a shitload of money he can put into getting the resources or assistance needed to defeating ANY threat.

Okay, after conferring with my sources (read: this guy ), I've determined that the most powerful entity in the Marvel Universe is "Eternity," who is the physical embodiment of the universe itself. As in, the entire universe. As in, everything in the universe; ever.

Doesn't Roma run, like, all the Universes? And the Beyonder, Phoenix, and even the Sh-iar have all come pretty close to destroying the universe before... still, the whole universe? What book was he in?

Hm... never heard of Roma before, actually. I looked into her a bit, but all I could find was that she was the daughter of Merlin, she bequeathed Captain Britain his powers, and that she used to communicate with the X-Men from time to time.

I think you're thinking of the Living Tribunal, who's basically what you said; the guy in charge of all universes. So... yeah, short of the Editor In Chief, I suppose the Living Tribunal is the strongest fella at Marvel.

I think some people are misunderstanding this thread. Now, if the question was "Who's Your Favorite Marvel Character," then anything goes, and Hell, even if it's, "Who's the Best Marvel Character" I think everyone would have quite a case so far, but so far the only thing Living Tribunal has against him is that he technically exists outside the Universe, and Eternity is debatable since he actually is the universe, but really, there's nothing I've seen to show that any individual has power comparable to Galactus.

If this is a case of you are what you eat, Phoenix has Galactcus beat pretty easily. He eats planets. She eats suns.

Phoenix is a pinnicle of exisitence. She has a counterpart in every universe and they all hang out in the center of creation.

I was surfing the internet, and found out that Phoenix battled Galactus once before over the life-force of a planet (it was in Rachel though, not Jean). It was a draw. Galactus explained to Rachel her purpose as Phoenix was to burn away what doesn't work, to destroy as he did and Rachel was forced to confront her past. She relized that she needed to confront the source and reason for and of her powers. Interesting.

I'll have to concede you that point about eating suns. I had forgotten that part of Pheonix's character; it seems most writers prefer to avoid it since it's a bit hard to write for a character that's just that ridiculously overpowered. Still, if we're considering cross-dimensionality, then I'll have to stand by the Living Tribunal as the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe.

Phoenix is always either horribly over-powered or kinda wimpy. We go from Jean Grey "I DESTROY UNIVERSES BY BLINKING!" Phoenix to Rachel Grey "I have the ultimate power, which can easily be detered by really stupid plot devices" Phoenix to Professor X and Spiderman "The writers must have been smoking something really funky" Phoenix.

(Can't find a picture of Prof. X in his phoenix outfit, but it's pretty funny...)

If you guys want to get dorky, then lets talk facts and figures.

Heres the list so far:

Galactus
Pheonix
Silver Surfer
Dr Doom
Hulk
Thor

and I'd also like to add Deadpool, since A) Rob Liefield created him, automatically an unfair advtange. He's got the healing factor, he wise cracks more then spiderman, and uses more guns then the punisher. Also he seems to be unstoppable from what I've read. Gamma radation, the punisher, falling out of an airplane, explosions, freezing weather, nothing can stop Deadpool.

If we're say Thor, should we also add Hela and Loki? Their costumes may have been stupid, but they were gods too.

Wow, you guys are dorks ^_^
:P

Is Dr Strange powerful? He's got such a cool name and he was on the cover of a Pink Floyd Album and in a T-REX song.
Ah, Wikipedia informs me... Well those other guys might have simple ordinary prosaic power over the bog-standard physical realm, (that includes the psychics), but Dr Strange’s powers extend way beyond that! Well, he’s powerful in an entirely different way.

Any gods like Thor, Odin and Loki would have similar strengths… Although Loki is just a demigod and Hela is Loki’s daughter.

-I don’t know anything about comics, sorry, but I still think Dr Strange should be in with a chance somewhere.

Strange, in and of himself, isn't that strong, but he could summon powers greater than himself, and I believe he's actually summoned Eternity to act on his behalf before, so yeah, he is one of the heavier hitters, but he's also a bit at the whim of the cosmic forces he relies on.

If we're going to bring up Deadpool, personally I think his greatest power is the fact that he's aware that he's in a comic book. She Hulk used to have the same power, and as I recall she would occasionally jump across panels or punch her way through pages of ads as a means of transportation; not sure what Deadpool did with his, but I know he'd talk to the caption boxes from time to time.

What about Scarlet Witch? She can essentially restructure all of reality however she feels like, as evidenced in House of M. Hm.. but I think she took away her own powers at the end, though.

Sigh... I remember a time when things were simpler, and all she could do was cause minor inconvinieces. I miss that.

Yeah, I think we could put her in the running. Dr Strange... I'm iffy on. He's pretty powerful, but he's not the strongest magick-user in the Marvel universe. Last time I checked, that honor went to Margali of the Winding Road, Nightcrawler's adoptive mother. She once created a fake Hell, and trapped Dr Strange, Nightcrawler, and the other X-Men at the time in it. Things might have changed since then though, so I'm iffy.

Last I heard, Strange was Marvel's official top mystic, just beating out Dr. Doom.

Edit: Okay, now that I've looked into it a bit...

It appears that Strange is the "Sorceror Supreme," a title I hadn't given much thought to before, but apparently means that he's the Official "Best Sorceror in the Universe." Seems there's a test for it an everything, and he passed with flying colors. That's not to say that he's got the strongest magic; NC's Mama may well have him beat there, but he is the best at performing formalized magic.

And like many of the other characters I've listed, he's been ignored for years on the grounds that he's simply too powerful, and to make matters worse, has no clear definition of his powers. The Ultimate Plot Device, Strange can do whatever is required for the script that week, be it mind-wiping a demi-god or turning a weedeater into a ham sandwich.
