Ok, so I want a nice big LCD monitor with great colour for my art...
The 24 inch dell monitor I bought last year is made with that cheap TN panel stuff, so while it looks pretty good, when looked at from a low angle it gets too dark at the top. I HATE that -_-
I bought another one yesterday, a 24 inch Samsung, only to find out that it uses TN as well and it's probably pretty much like the Dell I already have! I've looked through all the monitors I can buy locally at that size and unfortunately the Samsung seems to be the best of the lot.
I could get a larger monitor... But it costs a LOT more, and besides, there are other worries like increased power consumption and the resolution (I don't want to go smaller). If I get a 26 or 27 inch, the resolution is still the same... It's a gain, but without an increase in resolution the cost for the extra size is utterly unjustified!
30 inch monitors need two DVI cables (and possibly linked cards? I dunno) for the max resolution of over 2200 pixels by whatever it is. That's ok, At that size I wouldn't worry about a second monitor anymore, but the power consumption is a worry... and the cost is silly. The Mac screens of any size are utterly not worth it, they look good and have good colour, but they have a tiny size selection available and the 30 inch is laughably expensive for what you get. Dell is better, but still... and even Samsung is quite a lot and doesn't look as nice as the other two. (yes, looks are important to me).
SO I thought about a Cintiq... again, not worth it. It's only 21 inch with a lower res than my current 24 inch monitor (and not wide screen). And it costs more than a 30 inch Mac monitor. Yes, it's also a tablet, but that's not a killer reason to make up for the cost and lower res since I can use any sort of tablet just fine anyway.
What to do... :(

What're you doing that you're looking at your monitor at a low angle that often anyways? :3

Eh... =P
Well it's quite big... I can't slump down in my chair when I work on it, I have to sit perfectly straight or it starts to look slightly darker towards the top. That's annoying with the way I colour... It can lead to some bad mistakes :(
I SPOSE I could lean it more forwards... angle it downwards. :)
Still, the colour isn't set up that well either. I need something with better colour settings -____-

I have a LG flatscreen monitor at work and I hate it. I have a Viewsonic flatscreen at home and I love it. It is however, somewhat brighter than most and I have to compensate for that by just understanding that it is brighter and the colors can't be too dark. But it doesn't seem to suffer from the 'dark at the top' syndrome as much as say, my LG at work, which annoys the piss out of me.
But then, I've always liked viewsonic monitors.. so.. maybe I'm just bias. But if I could get a widescreen viewsonic at work with a monitor calibrator I'd be in heaven.

Huh. I have a mid-priced Dell monitor, and it's fine. It was actually recommended to me by someone who's a professional graphic artist. But it would be too small for you, it's only 20'.

Is the lighting in your room to harsh and are you sitting to close/far away?
I have a big, fat cheap emachine monitor and I've never had the trouble LCD screens get.(but there's the issue of space...)

CRT screens are so much better for colour and tone! T_T
At work all the comps have LCDs except for my graphic design machine that still has it's great huge sony CRT
But I don't want one for home again. I've got 4 LCDs doing various things. Only the Dell monitor has that darkening issue (because of the way it's made). And that's ma big one.
The colours aren't calibrated very well either. I've done the best I could but it's not ideal. It's the same in any light conditions.

Yep, that's my prob I spose. I really prolly should go for something smaller maybe if it has better colour... It's hard though, this size suits my work practice nicely. It's even hard to go back to my 19 inch monitors... Although I think the CRT at work it about 20 and that's fairly OK to work on. But even at the 1280 by 1024 size it feels a little pokey now, like I can't get everything I need on the screen at once.
With Dell, I'm worried that even the expensive monitors might just be essentially exactly the same thing as what I have now but with a nicer look (metal instead of plastic), and useless features like card readers, a usb hub and all the different TV inputs and sound outputs.

And I was thinking about an LG too! Now I'll reconsider. I hadn't thought about the Viewsonics at all, that's interesting.

Well I did nothing and just waited until the Samsung I'd already bought finally arrived. And waited... Waited... The idiots sent it by POST instead of delivering it like a NORMAL computer place.
I came home today to find a card in the letterbox saying that the postman missed me and I could pick it up from the post office. Wankers!!!!
It's here now, working. It DOES have a really nice colour setup! Really accurate and true to life colour setup right out of the box ^^
It also has that darkness at the top of the screen thing, but much less than the Dell. You have to bend right down to see it, while with the Dell all you had to do was sit back
It looks ok too, nicer than the Dell really, the stand is also a million times better- The Dell stand didn't have rotate and the tilt was more limited, it also didn't have any elevation.
I think I'll hold off on getting a 30 inch monitor now ^_^
