I think Slipshine does this--offers previews of their numerous comics, but charge for full access. For a single comic, though? No, I can't imagine a single webcomic good enough for me to pay for it. I've got enough absolutely wonderful webcomics to read that don't demand my money first.

Another thing is, Slipshine offers something that you can't easily find on the free side of the internet-- quality adult comics. There are a few, but they're rare compared to the non-adult comics. They're also already targeting an audience that is probably used to paying for this type of content.

Though I agree that if you gathered a bunch of great quality comics and offered them all in a way similar to how Slipshine does, you might have a higher chance of success.

Also wanted to point out that there was a lengthy post about micropayments over at www.webcomics.com this morning.

His observation mirrors the discussion in the thread.

This is compounded by the fact that deciding whether to buy something forces the consumer to think about whether they actually want to pay for it.People, on average, don't want to think very much, especially when it comes to entertainment. So to avoid it, they choose the free option over the paid option. This is the reason that the subscription model never quite caught on among webcomics, and it's the reason micropayments never caught on.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to make a little bit of scratch from your comic, but the micro payment thing is a bad idea, and to a lot of fans, is a slap in the face. The main problem with micro payments is that the main draw of the internet is free content.

The best route imo is to find a way to make money off of it, without directly charging your fans to read it online. You would benefit more from having a donation jar, offering commissions, selling printed collections and having banner ads.

You have to realize that the only thing people are willing to get up and grab their credit card for is porn.

Unless you're making an amazing porn comic, then yes micro payments are a great idea.
without buttcheecks, it's just a hole.
