MCT3K: Star Search!

As of late, my bizarrely popular series Mystery Comic Theater 3000 has become something of a minor phenomenon in these forums-- so much so, in fact, that it's getting hard to keep up with the workload. That's why I need YOU, fellow DD comic artists, to help me make it. Do YOU think you have what it takes to ridicule other people's comics? If so, read on!

Basically, the contest will work like this:

1. You (the reader) will choose one comic off of the list of not-currently-done comics that are up for MCT3King. A list follows:
  • ~Eggbert's Eggbert
    ~AlmightyNam's Sonic Boom
    ~Marine's Penis
    ~Elogotar's Final Fantasy 3.1
    ~Lukee's Knock On Wood
    ~DetectiveFork's Detective Fork
    ~Tunderscore K.'s Master of Theft
    ~Hero's Wintergreen
    ~Puff's Alpocalypse
    ~Cheeko's One Question
    ~Kytri's Rift
    ~Inkmonkey's Halfway to Dead
    ~Mazoo's Arch Angel
    ~LowResAtari's Mixed Bag Comics
    ~Magick Lorelai's Ialus
    ~Gibbo's Over The Edge
    ~Obsydian's Cat On Campus
    ~Subcultured's The Rock
    ~Richard777666's Screw Up
    ~Raintiger's Post Mortem
    ~Aurora Moon's Magical Mania
    ~Airaxen's Yami No Tanai
    ~Unmature's Unmature
    ~Ian Jay's Try Everything Once

    2. Choose three pages (only three! No more! But, I suppose, you can do less) from your selected comic and lambast them to your heart's content in true MCT3K style. YOU MUST USE YOUR OWN THREE CHARACTERS FOR COMMENTARY. Other people might find it fun, but I don't really enjoy other people putting words into my characters' mouths.

    A few tips for beginners:

~Make sure your commentary text balloons are placed only over unimportant parts of the comic. If you're blocking a character's head or any important original text balloons, you should probably move them.
~Lessen the contrast on the original page you're going to be ridiculing. You want your characters and commentary to stand out. (But make sure the original comic is still readable!)
~Use sex or violence jokes sparingly. They're sometimes funny on their own, but together they're just boring, repetitive, and unwelcome to the reader. (And why, when pop culture provides a much more vast source of entertainment?)
~Remember, this isn't an outlet for your burning hatred of a particular comic artist. It's merely a fun little exercise. If everybody laughs at everybody else, then, in the end, everybody's laughing, and the world becomes a little bit more bearable.
    3. Post your finished entries in this forum thread. Everyone else will then weigh in on how they think it turned out. On April 11 (exactly one month from today), I'll deliver my final verdict on each entry, and you'll be either moved on to the finalists' round or unceremoniously canned. (Oh, I'm sorry. You thought this was actually going to be like Star Search, where the masses vote on whether people move on? No, this is more of an Apprentice-style show. And I, as the Donald Trump analogue, decide your ultimate fate.)

    4. Finalists will then be asked to do another, even more difficult MCT3K-related task. (No, I'm not going to tell you how it's going to work! You'd get a chance to prepare in advance!) Eventually, I'll eliminate all but one participant, who will then get the exlclusive right to make official copyright-protected MCT3K entries (besides me). Unless, of course, I can't decide between two or three entries, in which case I'll put more than one new writer on the team.

It'll be a tough job. I am not lying when I say that most of you, in fact nearly all of you, will not make it. But it isn't who wins, it's playing that counts, right? Good luck... and Godspeed.

    Sincerely,

    Ian Jay

I have a question, will you be providing us with a template/graphics for the logo and space background for the header?

I get all my spacey pictures from this Astronomy Picture Of The Day [antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov] website.

As for the logo, here's something I hastily mocked up:

But that part really doesn't matter. Just be sure to put your name, the name of the comic you draw, and the name of your selected comic and its author.

...I got a small concern about that list... My comic is called Yami no Tainai, it's just hosted on pensandtales.com

Thanks again, sorry for the confusion.

Grooooan.

Well, yes, by "your characters" I meant "the characters you use in your comics". (But since they're sprites, won't their silhouettes just show up as vaguely jagged-edge squares?)

Is 3 people a set limit? 'cause I did a thing while back with me and three other friends making fun of sprite comics in my sprite comic contest. Would I be disqualified if I used the 4 people, or is the whole point to make it exactly like Mystery Science theater 3000 with three people rideculing.

Heh, lotsa questions... but I've got another. If a person's comic is in that list, can they still do an MCT3K thing on someone else's comic?

If someone is on that list and they CAN do others, I'd like to do T_K's "Master of Theft". xD

Dude, that is SUCH a misquote, it's not even funny. Go check.

Guys, if your comic is on the list, you can still participate. (Though you can't do your own comic. That would be lame.) And no, three is not a set limit, though I wouldn't recommend any more than four or less than two.

And... um... good luck! Again!

I'm gonna try Unmature! ...Let's see how I do.

EDIT: here, there's one page. How much does it score on the suckage scale?

Sorry that these are so much later than the first one! I had to rethink how I was doing the text, and was kicked off the computer for a few hours. Anyway, onto the last two:

You're telling me. Where is my rabid fanbase that overpowers TEO's ten-to-one NOW?!?

Still, from the entries I've seen so far, any wanna-be MCT3Kers are going up against some stiff competition already...

I would have done one sooner but my sarcasm was non-existent. So, here's my attempt (another two later) and I've done Unmature!

Okay! Final verdict!

Magick Lorelai: Nice work. The speech bubbles are sometimes a little hard to read, but for the most part, snarky and appealing.

Tunderscore K.: Slick and visually appealing. A few spelling errors, and the humor is a bit blah in some places, but there's a spark.

Richard One Million: Your jokes are good, but the speech bubbles are gigantic and god-awful-ugly. What did you do this in? MS Paint?

AND THE FINAL VERDICT IS...

...well...

...actually...

...um...

...I'm not too huge on actually doing MCT3Ks anymore. I liked the idea in the beginning, but now it's just kind of boring and tedious to make. I have better things to do. Maybe I'll make some later, over the summer, but for now consider MCT3K on long-term and possibly permanent hiatus.

So... congratulations! Nobody wins! Thanks for playing.

Damn you Ian Jay for quitting when I was next on the list.

S'okay though, I understand.

Also, I personally think Magick Lorelai was the best of the entries here. So you know, good job.

xD That's...rather unexpected. I wasn't expecting to win, but this was not how I was expecting not to win! *snicker*No hard feelings here, though.

Thanks, both Ian Jay and Eggberty! Sorry about the weird text bubbles, I'm still working on how to do 'em just right. *sheepish* but I'm certainly flattered by both yer comments. ^^ I'll still keep an eye out for MCT3K, if and when it ends its hiatus.

Man, I'm kinda dissapointed. I've improved my comic quite a bit lately (including using text bubbles) and I was hoping to see somebody do mine. I signed up almost right after you started too...
