I went back a few pages in the archive and didn't notice any topics on LBP, so the thread is either long past dead or doesn't exist. And I figured, since the game is now out, I would start one. Because that's what people do. In the video game thread. When new games come out. *ehrm*
All in all, I'm enjoying it. The single-player campaign is pretty good fun, but really, that's just your typical "Look! This is what you can do!"-type levels you'd find in any game creation system. But when you get to the level editor, the flexibility you have with the game really is impressive. You can lump together objects to create your own custom-made items, easily make mini-games like racing and picture-taking (And, given a bit of ingenuity, I'm sure you can take it MUCH farther than its original intended purposes), and even offer your custom-made items as prizes and secret items (I think). I wanna get through the single-player campaign before I start building, but just tinkering around with the creation mode was loads of fun. And, incidentally, I'd say it had one of the few tutorial modes I've ever seen that made me actually WANT to go through them, given the hilarious audio/visual presentations.
Of course, I myself have been having a problem getting online with this thing, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. It kinda takes a huge chunk out of the fun if I can't do multiplayer on any of the levels or download anyone else's.
Of course, the best reason to support LBP is to support the prospect of more user-created content in games. Imagine if Atlas made an RPG Maker for the PS3 or 360 that was just as detailed as LBP's - being able to just go online and download RPGs to the hard drive would make a console version of RPG Maker actually make more sense. Not that I don't enjoy the RPG Makers of old, mind you, but the memory card saves and not being able to submit them online just made the system clunky and inconvenient.

The servers are currently crying over something traumatic from a past life. A dedicated team is working round the clock to beat them into the soul-free machines god intended them to be.
I don't beleive a time was given, they'll just go down completely for a little while, then you'll be having sackley fun with your dumpey little friends whenever you want.

I've been really interested in LBP lately; it was pretty much the only PS3 game coming out that I have any more than a passing interest in playing. I would have bought it by now, but I was promised it as a gift later so now I'm just playing the waiting game...

So far I'm incredibly pleased with Little Big Planet. It's a triumph in design and packed with charm. Best of all, the gameplay is simple and straightforward, which is the very thing that always made Mario games so much fun. But like Hapopo said, the real champion here is user-created content, something I've always been a big fan of.
I finished the story mode last night and it was fairly satisfying, then I started my way through the level-making tutorials to discover that there is a huge amount of potential in the game. Right now I'm creating a level, which is daunting but fun. The more I learn, the easier it gets. I'll probably be playing this game for a long time.
The game is pretty close to perfect, but not quite. I think the controls are a little floaty and sometimes there's confusion when the game decides what screen depth you're trying to stand in. I haven't yet had a very meaningful play experience online yet... the few people who have joined me have quit early on in the level. But I expect the online problems to smooth out. I did bring the game with me to work to play with a coworker, and we had a BLAST.
Yeah, the PS3 doesn't have a ton of exclusive stuff right now, but LBP is a BIG one, and it's what got me to buy my PS3. As it stands, LBP alone isn't worth buying an entire PS3 for (when you have a 360 and PC) but I imagine I'll probably get my Street Fighter games on the PS3 as well, since I can't use my nice joystick on the 360. Plus, I'm sure other people are into Metal Gear and Final Fantasy. I'm not, though.
By the way, they say they're working on a LBP sequel, so we can be sure to have even more fun down the road. I think my PS3 purchase will be justified soon enough.

I picked it up yesterday. I've only been able to play a little (thursday night is like the one night I spend watching TV shows) It's definately alot of fun. I want to try to unlock as much stuff in the story mode as possible before I start toying with the level creation mode.
Can you upload your own art? hm? Like png's or jepgs or something?
Because that would be pretty boss!

Kind of. If you buy the PS3 Eye camera thing, you can take pictures of stuff and apply it to things like a sticker.

So is there going to be a BFF themed level then? :)
Yeah I know about the Eye-Toy theme, that really isn't what I'm going for though. I gotta play with it some more. This thing kept me up till 8am both friday and saturday.
I am going to make the most puzzle intensive platformer ever

Got it recently... been wholly addicted to it. Possibly to an embarassing degree. As a platformer, it's pretty lackluster, but the amount of stuff you can create on it is just crazy. I've spent most of my time refining my "Count Sackula's Castle" level (look me up on PSN as "Inkmonkey" if you're curious about it), and have been working on a few odd creations more or less just to try and recreate other games. Though I've had it pointed out that most of the other games I'm trying to recreate I could theoretically play since I own them already, so the whole things kind of a moot point... Oh well, it's still fun, and that's what matters, right?

In all seriousness though, while LBP sounds pretty awesome in concept it doesn't interest me much.
I mean as much as I like MAKING stuff, I like to make stuff that kills stuff, y'know?

As a platformer, it's pretty lackluster
People opinions of the game vary widely, but I find the thing most people disagree over are the controls. Some people think they are broken and awkward, and others, like myself, find them to be just about perfect. Personally, I don't think it is any more lackluster than other platformers that are out now. The developers manage to show a good range of what can be done in the game with a fairly interesting set of levels and there are some really inventive user created stages out there.

That's not entirely impossible in LBP. I've seen some user created stages with functioning air ships with cannons that can be aimed and fired at large scale enemies. Or remakes of shooters like Galaga. The developers have also mentioned that they would like to add other elements to the game in the future, like possibly functioning personal weapons and such. Also, you could make an argument that when building levels, the intent is to make something that will kill the player. I also have to admit that I enjoy beating up on my friends in the game or sneaking up when they are next to a ledge and bitch-slapping them into the deadly abyss below.

I agree that it's not worse than other side-scrolling platformers, but it's certainly not any better either, and it's definitely not the controls that people are excited for.

I don't know about that. The first time I popped it in with a couple of my friends, we wasted a good hour just playing around with the motion, arm and emotion controls, smacking each other around in the spaceship, making obscene gestures and motions (they really should not have made it possible to control the hips independently, it's too open for abuse), dancing, dragging each other around, etc.

Yeah, but that's different from what I'm talking about. That stuff's really cool, but it's not platforming. I do like how the emotes and stuff can be used as a rudimentary form of communication if you're playing online with people who don't have headsets. I think that's the best use of it, gameplay wise, but even aside from that, I think it's really cool that they put stuff like that in. It really adds to the immersion of the whole thing.

For the platforming element of the game, I actually like the level of challenge there is and I never really found the controls frustrating enough to stop playing. It's the first game in a long time that I've actually obsessed over acing stages and I really haven't felt that way about a video game since the SNES era. Plus, it is the first non-story-based game in ages that I've actually felt myself coming back to over and over again, just for the single player. I don't think I've done that with a platformer since Gex on the 3DO. Usually, if I can't beat it in two or three sittings, I get bored of the game.

Okay, but just out of curiosity, are you interested in acing the levels for the sake of acing them, or are you largely just doing it so you can get the extra materials and gifts the game gives you for it?

The materials don't interest me that much. I've already got my zombie pirate outfit, cowboy outfit and ninja with a frying pan, so I'm pretty good on costumes, too. so, it is mostly just the satisfaction of acing the levels (plus I still go back in and play many of the levels again after acing them just to see if I can get high scores).

I already have the clothes I want, too. But I'm trying to get 100% so that I have more materials to build my own levels with. I didn't even go into the level editor until I finished the story mode because I wanted to be missing as few building materials as possible.

Just got it a few hours ago and I fell in love with it as soon as I started running around the Introduction Credits "level." That's the most unique opening for a game I have ever seen. My husband and I were laughing our heads off while slapping each others' Sackpeople. I also love the British narrator. He says such cheeky stuff.
