im learning how to use layers, but there's just one problem: i have to work on one image start to finish in one sitting because i dont know how to save layered information. in other words, i dont know how to save it so i can stop in the middle of an image and go do something else, then come back to it later with the layers still available.
anyone have any tips?

Depends on the program. If it's photoshop, it's as easy as saving as a .psd (photoshop document).

photoshop - .psd
gimp - .xcf
just make sure that when you go to post it online it's been saved as a .gif or .jpg or it won't work right.

I would suggest saving it as a png for posting. Jpgs tend to leave artifacts and gifs use indexed colors, which doesn't normally look appealing.

Jpeg makes EVERYTHING look worse.
Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.
